I'm putting my money on Liberty City Stories. Although I've not played it, it is the handheld game I desire to play the most.

Soooo many DS titles to choose from here. I'm going to go with Animal Crossing. I think the wifi stuff puts it over the top.

My favorite this year would have to be between Lost in Blue or Castlevania on the DS or Riviera on the GBA.
And I almost forgot Metal Gear Ac!d on the PSP. I know I am in the minority on this one but I loved that game. Too many good games to choose from.

You may want to chage the wording of the question before Kelegacy comes along and votes for a handheld game involving his pee-pee tail! ;)
This is a tough choice, but I think i will have to say that Meteos has probably been my most played handheld game this year.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is a very close contender.

Castlevania: DS. It is very rare that I get this hooked on a game. I played it nonstop for two weekends straight and had a blast the whole time. It is every bit as good as Symphony of the Night, just a slight bit shorter.
It might not just be my favorite portable game, either. I can't remember a single game for any system I played all year which I enjoyed as much. Then again, I haven't put any serious time into Mario Kart or Animal Crossing, both of which I believe I am recieving for Xmas.

Hm. Such a tough question. Castlevania DS, Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing Wild World have each soaked up ridiculous amounts of my time. I'm not sure I can really make a decision there.

I'm still a sucker for the WarioWare games... I especially enjoyed WarioWare Touched, but Twisted was good as well. Maybe after 3 or 4 more releases in the series I'll finally get over my ADD gaming phase.
But I hope not. =)

Mario Kart DS will probably win,
then Animal Crossing DS.
Then Liberty City

Lumines for the PSP... I personally really enjoyed Trauma Center: Under the Knife for the DS - though Phoenix Wright is awesome too.

Off topic: did I miss the GotY for GameCube? Cause I've now seen all the rest (PS2, XB, and now handhelds), and I'm wondering where the GC went.
Please point it out to me if it's already been posted. I can't seem to find it.

Well, I have to wait for my wife (and/or the kids) to get me Animal Crossing, Mario Kart & Final Fantasy IV.
But my choices would be:
GBA - Fire Embleme Sacred Stones
DS - Castlevania
PSP - GTA LCS

Trama Center hands down. The game is great and immersive. You can really feel the pressure of trying to perform surgery under constraints. It just draws you in and then won't let go. I have seen people get so good at this game that they don't even need to look at what instruments then need to touch, they just instinctivly know where to tap on the screen. Girls seem to love this game as well.
Follow up is Wright:Ace Attorney. Great adventure game with the last case really showing off what future Wright games will be like on the DS. Add to the game some great dialog and total disregard for normal court proceedings, cool character designs and you can see why Capcom has a winner here.
Castlevania I am hesitant to give anything to. It's a good game. But it's a game I have played before. Several times. Also outside of using sealing spells the touch screen is really hardly used for anything and the other screen is a real-time map, which is great. But then again I was never a fan of the Metroid-ing of Castlevania.
So to me it's Trama, which BTW has sold great, and Wright, which is sold pretty good; go out and buy it if you want to see how the Japanese are still making headway in adventure games where Western developers once ruled and have dropped the ball.
Overall, when it comes to diversity, innovation, and fresh games, the DS is the system of the year.

I'm torn between Advance Wars DS, Mario Kart DS, or Animal Crossing WW. All great games. There are other DS games I still haven't had a chance to play. There's too many of them!

I really got into Mario Kart DS and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. Mario Kart would be my first choice though - hopefully I'll get the wifi dongle for Christmas.

Meteos is my first choice, Mario Kart DS is #2.
Did Zelda: Minish Cap come out this year or last year? If this year, I'd vote for that too.

I think the fact that many people only own one or the other portable kind of skews the results.
1) Castlevania DOS (DS)
2) Mario Kart (DS)
3) LCS (PSP)
4) Lumines (PSP)
5) Advance Wars: Dual Strike (DS)

Trauma Center
Meteos

Mario Kart DS and GTA: LCS
X-men Legends II and Burnout Legends on the PSP were also great titles.

Just wanted to add that I haven't had a chance to play the FF IV remake on the DS, but it might be being overlooked since it was released so late in the year.

How to pick? Meteos, Kirby, Minish Cap, Advanced Wars ... I enjoyed the hell out of Mario DS, although I don't think that qualifies. I'm going to have to pick Lost in Blue, though. I really enjoyed the open ended exploration aspects of the game, and I'm enjoying all the cooking and cleaning parts of the "girl's story" now that I've finished it. It's a great game.
Sadly, as but a lowly grad student, I've had to marshal my income for more important things (like drinking and food, in that order) than video games. In the new year, when I get paid, I hope to pick up Phoenix Wright, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. And maybe a PS2 (which I've never owned) to check out Shadow of the Collosus and Katamary Damacy. I hear those are worth checking out.

And I almost forgot Metal Gear Ac!d on the PSP. I know I am in the minority on this one but I loved that game.
Ac!d was great, your love is justified. Fear not. :P
Personally my best title of the year goes to GTA:LCS and Castlevania DS pretty much as a tie in my mind.
Lumines is still THE handheld game to own but that was a 2004 release according to Moby games, curse my memory. :D

Depends on the system I guess
Nintendo DS:
1) Mario Kart, awesome game overall and great multiplayer experience, tons of fun
Runner up: Castlevania, excellent game and easy to love
Notable mention: Mario & Lugi: Partners in time, great sequel to an outstanding game
Sony PSP:
1) Lumines, super addictive and awesome pick-up and play gameplay
Runner up: Burnout Legends, Crazy arcade racing on a handheld, tons to do
Notable mention: Socom: FTB, best handheld multiplayer, good single player game
Gameboy Advance:
1) Zelda: Minish Cap, excellent addition to the series, fun story to play
Runner up: Final Fantasy IV, 40 hours of gameplay, updated graphics
Notable mention: Fire Emblem: Sacared Stones, worthly sequel and tons of fun
If I had to combine all systems I'd pick Lumines and then Mario Kart as a runner-up

If you dont have a wireless router, u need to buy the thingie through Nintendo's online store, or go to McDonalds and play there.
Im glad to see that so many ppl have DS. My choice would b either Mario kart DS or Tony Hawk S8land

You need two things, plus the DS: One is a wi-fi connection that you can access, and the other is a wi-fi enabled game.
If you've got a wireless router and a copy of Mario Kart, you're set.
If you've just got the game, you need to get a wireless router, or Nintendo's Wi-Fi Access Point, or head to a wifi cafe or McDonalds.

I have all three of them (bought the DS/Mario Kart bundle along with Phoenix Wright) and a wireless router. I am having issues connecting the DS to my wifi. Probably be best to contact their technical support...Bleh.

Probably.
Check http://www.nintendowifi.com/ to see if the router's supported first, though.
I vote in order
1. GTA Liberty Cities
2. Animal Crossing
3. Socom Fireteam
4. Lumines
5. Lost in Blue

Phoenix Wright was the best game on any handheld system, and I can prove it! Bangs hands down on desk.
Awesome, awesome game, I just hope we see some more of those come out of Japan. I've just picked up Animal Crossing and I'm having hella fun with that so far, so that would be a close runner up.
Honourable mentions: Meteos, CastleVania & Mario Kart. It's pretty strange when I think about it though: these last few months, I've played more with my DS than any other system I own. A sure sign of quality titles if I ever saw one. :)

The coolest hand held game I got this year was "Ossu! Tatakae! Oendan!" for DS, if anyone out there likes music games you owe it to yourself to pick this up. But seeing as that's out of region I'll go for Minish Cap closely followed by Animal Crossing; I can never get enough Zelda, and I'm having a great time with wifi in AC, it's very impressive.

How are Lost in Blue and Trace Memory on the DS? They both look like very interesting games that I likely won't be able to find in stores after too much longer. Are they worth picking up or should I just rent them?
Can I add the Final Fantasy IV remake to the list? I'm so addicted... again... Minish Cap was great too.

An intervention is needed if we are to save your gaming soul. You are like my whore ex-girlfriend...you cant stick with one game for too long. You jump around spreading your disease and filth like a plague-ridden monkey, and when you come crawling back after all your extracurricular fun and fondling with other games, you bring your infected cunt back to the original game for a few short spells and then you are off again on some wild adventure whenever a new game shakes its newness in your face and you run to him and let him fondle your tits and I get so pissed I punch the wall and cry into my pillow and want to die why does this have to happen to me I love her so much I deserve better than this but I can't leave I can't leave, I just cant leave because maybe she'll change maybe she'll realize how much I love her and care about her and she'll see how I've always been the ONE, the only one, her destined one, but for now she spreads her love around instead of giving it all to me, maybe this is a phase and she'll mature out of it and we'll be together forever just the two of us like we were always supposed to be.

Trace Memory is a rent, probably. It's has some very clever interface design (hopefully Cing will make a game for the Revolution), but the story is a bit amateurish and it's rather short.

Uh... ok... *backs away slowly*
Actually, I do feel bad sometimes when I look at my collection and see all of the really cool games that I started and then abandoned when the next shiny trinket came by. Then I remember about all of the games that I was able to put 60+ hours into over a 2 week period (FFX, I'm looking at you).
The biggest problem now is that there were just a lot of great action games released recently and I knew that I could polish them off quickly before getting back to DQ8. Especially given that I knew I have all of next week off and won't have to spend all my free time looking after the little nipper. So I have FFIV, the two aforementioned DS games (sans system) and Guitar Hero & DQ8 to play next week. And possibly WoW or EVE if I can install them on the inlaw's system.
Sigh, I am a wreck...
/edit: Sorry for hijacking the thread... again... I won't do it until the next time.

I second that. It's the most time I've put in a puzzler since Tetris Attack.
I highly recommend hooking it up to a decent stereo to get the best gameplay experience. If I'm ever stuck some place in my car, I hook it up to the jack I usually use for my iPod.
It's good stuff.
