View Full Version : Activision Wants Call of Duty To Be Biggest Franchise Ever
Activision has its iron-sights set on making Call of Duty the biggest gaming franchise ever. I reckon they have a good shot but didn't they get rid of that title? From MCV. (http://www.mcvuk.co.uk)
“Each year the Call of Duty franchise goes from strength-to-strength,” brand manager Simon Wells told MCV.
“We want to propel this year's title to be the biggest selling video game of all time. That may raise some eyebrows, but step back and look at the franchise's trajectory through preceding launches, and this objective starts to look viable.”
The game is due for release in November, and will be backed by intense marketing support said Wells: “We firmly believe we have the potential to be the No.1 entertainment property of the year. The reality for a franchise as large as Call of Duty is that we are competing directly with entertainment propositions outside of the video game space.

You've got to keep that title on it to count!

Meh. I understand Call of Duty is a pretty big cash cow, but eventually they're going to have to move away from WW2. Until we get Call of Duty: Spanish Inquisition, I'll probably just avoid the series.

How did you somehow avoid Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, one of the best games of the last two years? Also one of the best selling games of the last two years, and still one of the most played games of the past two years.

I think people are going to just grow tired of COD if they keep releasing it every year.

In order of my own personal enjoyment, from most to least:
CoD 4
CoD 5
CoD 2
Watching grass grow
Broken bones or dislocated joints
CoD 3
They have a shot. It's a fun series.

When did they release CoD5 again? I don't know of any CoD game that has a 5 in it's name...

Call of Duty: World at War is technically the fifth, although it doesn't have the number there.

But then you have to include Call of Duty: Finest Hour, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, Call of Duty: Roads to Victory and Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts.
The CoD series has been milked. It continues to be great though and so I can't complain.
My only worry is that if they leave the mechanics as they are then things will begin to feel dated. WaW even feels a little old-fashioned.

I only really liked 1 and 4, and nowhere as much as I like Halo 3 vor Left 4 Dead.

I agree, Modern Warfare 2 at no point mentions the CoD name, as if to push Modern Warfare as a new series independent of CoD. This Simon Wells guy must've failed brand recognition 101, dropping the name from your product isn't exactly a good way to promote your brand.

If you really want to be prick-ish about numbering, then CoD 4 is actually 3. Check the title screen in the game for the big "F-U" to Treyarch from Infinity Ward.
I'll stick with my numbering. It was (supposed to be) simpler than spelling out the stupid long titles or messing with acronyms.
World at War is the fifth in the main series. There have been offshoots, because like any large company, Activision likes to sell lots of 'milk,' even if it does mean thinning out the quality.

Why bother with annual productization?
Ship a new COD every 6 months!
