The trailer for Punch Out that came out of GDC has been released direct feed style, and while it looks very pretty and has some great style, it seems to harbor most of the same methods for beating opponents that we have seen previously (http://evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81324).
Hit the headline for the video.

Oh the noes. A minute and a half video clip tells me its exactly the same as previous incarnations. Heaven forbid I wait to actually play the game before casting stones.

Yep. Same 'ol Punch-Out. You can see punches coming from a mile away.
Nintendo, masters of innovation.
And yet, I'll still get it. :)
I think they should have shown less repetitive body blow stuff, but still, looks great. Does it look like anything more than an update to the same old mechanic? Nope, not to me it doesn't, but I think comparatively speaking Nintendo's body of work is still way ahead of the curve in that respect. This definitely still captures the look and feel of old-school punchout without feeling dated in any way, which is nice.

A good way to introduce the kids to some fun old-school action. Looks like there are some new fighters involved we just haven't seen yet too (I don't remember The Disco Kid being in the NES or SNES games for instance), so hopefully that means some new patterns at least.

Hell yeah. Can't wait for this one. Don't know why it took so many generations until we got a new Punch Out.
Love the style they have going for it.

Because it's just about time for the 80s to become nostolgia.

There were some parts of the video that showed your character working out. It would be really cool if they added some RPG elements to the game, so you could buff up your character in some way.
Probably not going to happen, though...
I'd still like to play it, even if it's basically the same game with a facelift. I loved the original and Super Punch Out.

O_o
They've made something like one punchout game per decade.
Most modern gamers have never played ANY punchout.
Why would they need to "innovate"?

That wouldn't in any way be punchout...
I've never understood the "They need to take x old game and bring in a bunch of elements that fundamentally change it's gameplay into something enetirely different" mentality.

Because if they didn't, you're paying for...the same game. Adding elements doesn't mean you have to take away elements. Most of these old games aren't very deep. I think there's room to add and still keep what you like.

Where's Mike Tyson?
Busy biting peoples in teh ears? Beating up hoe's? I can't imagine why the developers wouldn't want to include him in this game.
Jokes aside.
Yes it looks like a mindless copy of the previous punch-out games.
Yes it's another example of shallow, gimmicky wii games.
Yes I will buy it and my friends will play it for months.
Touche nintendo, you know me well.

I don't see the problem with the game being almost entirely modeled off the original. I thought the original was amazing for it's time... and actually still is to this date... One of my first Virtual Console downloads in fact, and I'm still playing it to this day.
So the new one has graphical upgrade, and a couple tweaks here and there... fine with me.

this is exactly the game they should make! why change? make another crap boxing game like the rest on the wii? why change a winning consept where gameplay comes first? I love that you can use the gamepad for this aswell.

I can understand Mike Tyson and Soda Popinski being taken out, but MARIO?!!? Big mistake.
GI: One of the things that people noticed while I was playing in the office was that Mario isn’t the ref anymore. Did you decide to go for a more realistic ref to keep up the tone? What was behind that decision?
Yeeloy: We dabbled in that. I think it was more about the fit to the game and that sort of thing. We thought it would be nice, because it was a nod to the old franchise, but just because of the way that things progressed in the project, we ended up leaning more toward the [new] ref. And we kind of like it. We’re OK with not pushing too hard to get [Mario] in there.
