Despite WW2 being a very tired genre of gaming, I'm willing to get on board 1943 simply because the original Battlefield 1942 was the pinnacle of online-gaming, and shooters in general. To me, at least.

I hear you AversionFx that's why I getting on board with this game. I hope the B-25's are flyable as that would be cool.

i agree that 1942 was teh pinnacle of online gaming for me as well.

i DISAGREE about being tired of the genre though :) i can never get enough of a solid ww2 game.

what i always have been tired of are the modern shooters.

'42 was my favorite PC game from DICE as well. This looks OK but they've been in the console arena and under EA's thumb for so long now... my cynical side says they can go fuck themselves. :) We'll see.

I say bring it on! I had more online fun with the 1942 demo than I have with a lot of full retail games since then.

Tribes was one of those games I just didn't get. I wanted to like it, but I never found it fun.

I'm sure for hardcore fans of the series, the name (1943) will make sense, but to someone who didn't play the original much, I thought they already made this game. I wonder how they will market this to show that this one is "new" for 2009...

re: tribes, i didn't like the original, but really got into t:2 (which hard core fans of the original disliked in many cases)...

I guess that's why there's so many options for us FPS gamers out there :)

There will never be another game like Tribes, it was perfect.

I'm pretty sure that you can call in a bombing run, you don't fly the B-25's.

No WW4.

BF5! Someone Pushed The Button!!

Stone, trap, and bludgeon your enemy to death while searching abandoned supermarkets for food in this gritty post apocalyptic shooter!

I cant wait for this game. I just pray the humor that BF2 had makes it. I laughed myself to tears constantly while playing that game.

If Frank and his team came back to do Desert Combat Final 2 on this I'd be in gaming bliss forever. Sadly, after DICE+EA stabbed them in the back I doubt that would ever be on the cards.

Are these the guys that made BF2 what it was?

This

Up to 24 Players

I simply can't get excited about this aspect. This is a seriously huge disappointment on my part. Not that I would of bought the game anyway as I have a personal ban on all things EA, but 24? Come on.

These are clearly "Bullshots" (see this comic: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/09/12/)

Little more than concept art, target renders, whatever you wanna call it. The edges are so soft in those renders you may as well be pillow-fighting. Anyone remember the original Killzone demo? Just like that. This is being rendered on a suped-up PC running hardcore graphics cards in an SLI configuration.

I love the third shot, with the guy taking out a tank from... five feet away with a bazooka, but no blast-back.

Rendering has made leaps and bounds, realism still freakin' sucks.

Either that or rendered at 1920x1080 and scaled down. The graphics don't look that unbelievable.

1942 isnt exactly the most realistic ww2 shooter out there. I mean you could actually stand on the wings of a bomber in flight and do repairs :D

Still, it was awesome fun to play and I hope 1943 captures that.

Yeah, the scale-down trick is probably the most common way a bullshot is created in today's media environment - because it's considered the 'most ethical' way to doctor a shot. Everyone knows (the saying goes) that it looks better in motion because the blemishes are hidden by action. But, if this was an actual undoctored still, the game in motion would look a helluva lot better too. So it's still misrepresentation.

They keep doing it because other PR agencies will also keep doing it. But, essentially, it's fraud. Yes, fraud. If a shot has been doctored to portray concept art, or has been upsampled massively (as this appears to be) in order to remove jaggies, then there needs to be some kind of disclosure.

You never played Tribes.

I played the absolute hell out of Tribes. It did not bring the degree of "multiplayer," that 1942 did. In my opinion, Tribes was a brilliant online game, but it was effectively a big free-for-all. That and it was horrendously complex and merciless for its time.

BF1942 was an all-encompassing shooter, to me.
