Smarthouse has posted a rumor (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Industry/E8V5R9D3) that Sony is planning a big Playstation 3 related announcement on Tuesday. Time for a price drop?
Sony Computer Entertainment is set to make a global announcement this week regarding the PS3 which has witnessed three months of declining sales with Tuesday, March 31 which is Wednesday in Australia set to be the big day.
Analysts are tipping either a massive price drop for the PS3 or the launch of a brand new browser and online content.

It's going to be a price drop but not a price drop. They are going to introduce a new model of the ps3 and drop the 80gb model to a lower tier price while introducing a new model for the same price and an even higher priced model with more nick nacks.

All signs point to a PS2 price drop. $99
If it had HDMI output I'd buy one. (for dvd upconversion)

It's a minor point, but sales of Wii, 360, PS2, DS and PSP have all had "three months of declining sales" ; it happens every year after Christmas.

If its not a bonafide price drop then I don't care, I don't want a new skew with packins, I want a cheaper Ps3, but then who doesn't.

Well I don't want to quote you on it... But I hope that the source is more accurate than you in that it states "Sony Computer Entertainment is set to make a global announcement this week regarding the PS3" Here is hoping for a PS3 price drop...
maybe they will announce someone has finally developed a game for ps3.

lol, ah zeal.
I was thinking it would be an announcement of an announcement about 09 being the year of the ps3 and a rerererelease of Home, the definitive experience. I still just want a price drop, but this might be a fun thread non the less.

Killzone 2, inFamous, Fat Princess, Uncharted 2, Valkyria Chronicles DLC, for me 2009 will be the year of the ps3. :P (will it be the year that Sony wants? Nah I think they will continue to lose market share, but it sure is a good time to own a ps3.)

Announce a return to hardware BC and I buy in. No? Not interested.

Would that be in the testicular region, or the anal/sphincter one? :D

They could mean year-over-year sales for the past three months. PS3 has had declining sales, while the Wii and 360 have had increasing sales for the past three months year-over-year.

Probably going to announce that PS3 is the number one selling black console in the industry, how they're not competing with Nintendo or MS, yada yada, 10 year life-cycle, blah blah, online play, etc.
Then they unveil the Sony version of the Wii-mote which will be the exact same version they use for the next 6 consoles, with minor upgrades each 6 months, along with some Sony-style bragging about how it tracks direction in 12 axises and 5 dimenions ;P And then, just to prove to the critics that the PS3 is selling SO WELL, they announce a price INCREASE, take that! Yes, can't wait.

No, that would be the wonderful world of 360.
I am going with a drop in price for the PS2, which if that is all it is, is complete fail for an announcement and shouldn't even be considered news.

If it's a price drop, it's not going to affect us in Australia. The PS3 has already gone from $1000 to $700, and now it's sitting at $600. Might be a US price drop though.

Price drop is doubtful considering there's an upcoming Target flyer with a new $400 bundle (two games rather than one). Sony's definition of "big" doesn't mean much and probably just means they'll announce this new bundle, maybe one last PS2 price drop before they retire that line. Would a new browser and DLC really be considered a "big" announcement?

I'm taking this "rumor" with a huge grain of salt. Smarthouse has a bunch of articles that seem to be based on pure speculation (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/U9J5U7M7), never bothering to quote or refer to even once source at all.
A lot of these 'articles' (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/X6Q6M3K2) seem like easy ways to get page hits, since you can't really expect readers to remember the details of a prediction for 2011 if things turn out to be entirely inaccurate.
And that David Richards jackass they have writing articles needs to fact check a little more when writing (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Industry/W9T8F4P9):
Now Blu ray players are down to $200 and the PS3 is looking very tired, expensive and noisy.
Excuse me? I've got all 3 current-gen consoles in my household, and of them all the PS3 is BY FAR the least "noisy". But he doesn't stop there, he continues to show that he has no idea what he's talking about while sensationalizing (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Industry/P2S4C3W2):
And the very fact that both the Xbox and PS3 come with hard drives and internet connectivity makes the temptation to store such illicit and unsavoury images on these devices must be tempting.
Sorry, genius, but the 360 doesn't have internet connectivity. But by all means, continue to jump on the Wii bandwagon with all silly claims in these and other articles! No wonder this site had their asses sued by Sony when they accused them of price gouging. (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Industry/M7R4T9F4)

Here's another "Richards" (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Industry/W9T8F4P9):
When the PS3 was launched, Sony deliberately designed it so that it was not backward compatible. Instead the Company tried to get two bites of the cherry by continuing to sell the PS2 as a low cost console and the PS3 as a premium console, thus forcing die hard gamers to buy a new Sony PS3 console and new PS3 compatible games.
LOL. I understand that in Australia the PS3 might've been launched as a no-BC 80giger, but to claim that Sony intentionally designed it without BC in mind is the most blatantly-false statement in the world (considering it was first launched in US/Japan WITH FULL BC). One that any decent reporter would have been able to discover from 2 seconds of fact-checking!
This site just looks more and more like a complete joke. I doubt anything will come of this 'rumor'.

Regardless of what it would be about, why would they have any kind of big announcement this close after the GDC? That just doesn't make sense. They would have either announced it there or waited a while longer...

Sony's fiscal year ends March 31st so any price cut they announce for any system would reflect on their 2009 sales year. A PS3 sold today counts for sales in 2008 a PS3 sold on April 1st counts for sales in 2009.

The timing of Sony's fiscal year is probably the entire reason this 'rumor' got started. If they were to announce a price-cut for 2009, it would be on or later than tomorrow. But it really seems like some analyst is taking a shot in the dark since nobody from SCE has ever hinted at any PS3 price cut having a snowball's chance in hell anytime soon.

I would love for this to be either a nice price drop for the PS3 or, hopefully, they're releasing another PS3 with PS2 BC.
Knowing my luck, probably neither, but I would love for them to have a BC PS3 available again.

All the actual announcements from SONY do not state ps2 or ps3, just a announcement, guess thats why its a rumour. Already some scans of KMART $99 Ps2's to go on sale in april, so most likley that is it. Also the poorly hidden 2 game ps3 bundle we have all heard is comming will probely be announced at the same $399 price.

A 'rumor' is not news. It doesn't belong on a 'Game News' section, and there's a reason why you can't find this latest 'rumor' on any legit sites. My point, that you refused to see, is that the site almost exclusively uses these 'rumors' as a substitute for real reporting.
I used to be a gaming journalist, by the way, so my bias might show through. But please, don't turn this into an issue of me defending Sony. I'm defending good journalism, which this site is clearly lacking across the board.
Who cares if the 360 is still outselling it? It had nothing to do with the point I made, try to leave your own bias at the door in your next (inevitable) critique of my comments, pal.

Because I neglected to mention how ridiculous this comment is-- have an opinion piece on how the PS3 is a failing console is one thing. But to single out one of the advantages (quieter console) the PS3 has over the CONSOLE competition in said article is the sloppiest kind of persuasive writing I've ever seen. Stop making excuses for this hack.

God, you're still not getting his point. He's saying that one of the selling points of the PS3, Blu-ray, is looking long-in-the-tooth now that you can get a cheap Blu-Ray player that's also quieter than the PS3, how is there any BS in that at all, with $200 BR players on the market that run quieter. Hmm? His point is that Blu-Ray playing ability is no longer a selling point for the PS3. Not at all.
Anenome
03-30-2009, 05:05 PM
I'd go so far as saying that including Blu-Ray in the PS3 is what cost Sony this console generation. Imagine a PS3 that could be sold for $300, everyone would want one. We buy a console to play games, get a clue Sony. Stand-alone Blu-Ray players would come and did come.
Why didn't Sony do that, ditch Blu-Ray? Mainly because of culture differences between Japan and the US. In Japan, another $100 is nothing. The spending culture there can absorb that extra cost. Not so with the US, we're more price-sensitive for our consoles. That and because Sony wanted to push the BR format. BR is a good format, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure it was worth pricing yourself out of the market in order to push.
And, as we know, there are exceedingly few games that actually require a BR disk. And also many problems associated with using BR in the first place, such as low-seek times, necessitating game installations. Oh well, live and learn, Sony.

I agree, thank you (that's Tee's actual quote, undoctored, forsrs!). Sony realized the 'Problem' not long after the PS3 came out, when they fired the man who designed the PS3, backed it in the company, and built its entire marketing strategy: Crazy Ken Kutaragi, the vunderkind who was once set to become CEO. Yeah. Right. Can you imagine Crazy Ken trying to hype products other than the PS?
"Now, you too can tele-port yourself to a new dimension using Sony's reality-canceling headphones! All while heading home in your new Sony Flying Car!(TM) The new Sony jPod is so awesome, you can listen to TWO SONGS AT ONCE, one in each earbud, who needs a silly ol' Apple iPod now? Not me!"

Blue ray did not kill the PS3, price is killing it (opinion only). Blue ray Drive may be part of the reason for the price, but its also part of the reason the PS3 games cant be pirated (yet) talk to MS about that one. As for Blue ray not being a selling point, i would disagree (somewhat). Game console with a HD $250-300, Good Blueray player (its been said many times the PS3 is a GOOD blue ray player, most $200 stand along Blue ray players are not) $200-300 so total is $450 minumium, One machine that does both for $50 less and also doesnt take up two spots, 2 HDMI port, 2 plugins (yes even off, machines take a small amount of power). I know $50 isnt some HUGE chunk of change, but it is something. there is a Downside, if you buy them both and one fails, replacement costs are less.
I have no idea why every thread turns into my Console is better then yours, guess its the nature of knowing you wont ever be held responsible for your comments.
