Even though Metal Gear Solid 4 was supposed to close off the series completely, and apparently did, Kojima has confirmed towards the end of his keynote that he is working on the next MGS. Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/gdc-kojima-confirms-the-next-mgs):

He said he wanted to tackle this mission using a combination of Japanese and Western development philosophies. He described his approach, the typical Japanese approach, as being design-led, while he identified the recent trend in Western game development as being led by software technology, particularly the freedom of open-world games.

He invited developers in the audience to challenge his "old-style" approach by coming and talking to Kojima Productions, and perhaps working there. The studio's hiring at the show.

It doesn't quite amount to a formal announcement of a new Metal Gear Solid, and it was met with a muted reception at the keynote. Perhaps this was because the audience wasn't sure if Kojima was joking (it was a light-hearted talk), or perhaps because it's no great surprise.

What do fans of the series think about this?

If so, hell yea! I loved the last one...unlike so many here. It was a masterpiece...bring me some more badass storytelling and action sequences!

And people bitch about the halo franchise being milked.

I have a feeling this thread is going to be hilarious.

Bring on more Metal Gear. Fuck yes.

I'm hoping it's a re-make of one of the original Metal Gear titles, or perhaps something like an introduction of Solid Snake from his early military career, leading into his first Foxhound operation.

If it picks up where MGS4 left off, I'll be pretty disappointed.

You're pretty much talking about a Metal Gear remake. Either way, it'd be kinda cool.

It won't be Metal Gear Solid, since Solid Snake's story is over. It'll be a Metal Gear X game, most likely.

I want a cow level in a game that combines Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Halo, Mario, and Tetris IP/elements...where the object is to obtain as much milk as possible.

Moooooooo!

Nah. Solid Snake existed before he was a Foxhound agent. The briefing in the first MGS talks about him being (I think) a green beret in the Gulf War, while Liquid Snake was behind enemy lines sabotaging SCUD launchers.

Would be interesting to have an actual history on Solid Snake.

Everyone knew this was coming. He's gone on record since Metal Gear Solid 2 saying that would be his final game. And then around a year later he announces hes working on the next one.

I really do hope that at some point he hands the franchise to some one else. MGS4 was one of the most bloated, overwrought games I have ever played. Everytime something interesting was going to happen, the game launched into a cutscene.

The original Metal Gear Solid is one if my favorite games of all time. Please let this game be a return to form.

More MGS! Hell yes!

Perhaps playing The Boss in her formative years?

Will be interesting to see what Kojima has in store.

I am pretty sure Kojima said MGS4 was only the end of Solid Snake's story and not the last MGS game period... here's hoping either Raiden is actually the star of the next game... or Akiba (close enough to Snake for me)... plus he is a total badass with those sunglasses and that Sniper Rifle... perfect for an East meets West game design...

Akiba eh?

New game mechanic... you have to void your bowels every hour or so lest the smell diminishes your ability to be stealthy. :D

I enjoyed MGS4 quite a bit, but when I went through a second playthough and skipped all the cutscenes, there was barely any game there. I hope he finds a way to include the player more in this next one, whatever its going to be about.

Damn man, I hope we get to play Snake as he does baking and cleaning Martha Steward style. With the power of the Cell, we might just be able to smell the cakes and cookies baked in game.

If you ask me, Kojima should have made a ZoE game instead or better something new and leave this IP to one of his protege. T.T

Yay.

Obviously it won't be a Solid game but I'm glad he is at the helm. I would like Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 remakes, in the MGS4 engine, as a start please.

Awesome, I've loved every MGS Game so far :)

I could deal with this easily and happily.
You could always bring Snake back by having a storyline about an entire line of Big Boss clones that were created outside the Les Infants Terrible project. Unknown to all groups from the Solid series.

That way you can keep the Snake face and voice going as I have a man crush on Hayter's Snake voice.

Though, I would beg Kojima to go back to Snatcher and ZOE before another Metal Gear game. Please...

I wouldn't mind a new Metal Gear game at all, personally. MGS 4 was, for me, the game of the year 2008 because of the technical genius that went into the game and level design, the soundtrack, the game play, the voice acting and pretty much everything else. Unlike others I felt that the buildup and the cutscenes were only too fitting for the fans of the series who have wanted explanations, answers and closure. They left no plot thread unresolved, but the people that didn't understand the story or just didn't care about it, I can certainly understand why they didn't think much of the game.

If they're doing another Metal Gear game, I think they should go back and remake the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as next generation titles. I think there is simply no more story to tell after Metal Gear Solid 4-it's pretty much THE END of the storyline, and rescuscitating it in order to pump out another game would be a disservice to conclusion of the storyline.

Remaking Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 gives us a chance to witness the confrontations between Snake and Big Boss in a way that will feel more epic and cinematic. Also, we'll get to play Solid Snake in his prime, which is something we haven't been able to do since MGS. No Foxdie, no 'old guy waiting to be supplanted by the younger, bishonen hero' aspects, no geriatric old folks home snakke....Kojima has only given us one true opportunity to play 'Solid Snake' in the cinematic presentation he would prefer, and remakes of the old games would give him a chance to do that. Additionally, we would get a much better game and more fully realized story with all the next gen tools available to Kojima Productions. I know that redoing MG and MG2 wouldn't give us anything truly 'new', but remakes could still be awesome games and the old material would get the update it direly needs to stand beside the MGS lineup.

I wouldn't balk at a Metal Gear Raiden game, either. Unlike others, I had no problem with Raiden as a character, and he's led a sad and tragic life filled with a lot of danger and excitement that could translate well into a video game.

Everyone here who's excited about a new metal gear game is in luck: I uncovered the story behind Kojima's next brilliant masterpiece. Prepare to have your minds blown out your ass:

The story is about Raiden - who is really the forgotten clone of the VR simulation that went rogue to start its own proxy experiment. He infiltrates the splinter organization that grew out of the shell corporation formed by the Patriots after the Second World War, as an attempt to exert control over the worlds economy. Eventually you uncover the truth that your mother is, in fact, Solid Snake - whose incubation of an experimental nano-virus allowed the successful fertilization of the DNA of Big Boss within a laboratory deep within the Arctic wilderness. Only by traveling deep into the headquarters of the deadly assassins known as "The Newts" will he finally confront his ultimate destiny - a killer with a tortured history that longs only for a man to hold him in his arms: The Black Crow Jackal Hound. Also, players will have to balance multiple "gauges" that measure Raiden's health, mental health, stress, and time since last jerking off. Careful management of rations, cold and hot compresses, Powerbars™, radio pep-talks, and adult magazines for a quick "hide-and-spank," will be essential to ultimate victory.

Doubtless it will sell a billion copies.

Nah that story makes too much sense to be a MGS.

As long as people are still applauding such horrifyingly bad story-telling, the horse is not dead yet.
