Paul Thurrott (http://www.internet-nexus.com/2005/12/xbox-360-sales-data.htm) has posted up some detailed Sale info regarding the XBox 360 and it's games as well as accessories. It seems wireless controllers are quite popular.

- Percentage of wireless controllers sold per Xbox 360 consoles sold: 98%- The worst selling first party title was Kameo: Elements of Power, with 73,801 copies sold. However, Kameo was number 8 on the Xbox 360 sales chart.
That's really ashame about Kameo...Microsoft needs to step up the marketing on it...the commercial that's out now is pretty weak. So far Kameo is my favorite title on the 360.

Thanks Borys for the tip!

Yeah, I've been surprised at the lukewarm response to Kameo. Thus far it is my favorite XBox 360 title. . . I think mainly becuase its the most original of the launch titles.

It may have been the lowest selling first party game, but the other two are PGR3 and PDZ. So, I think it's more relevant that it's number 8, and it's worth noting that it has a lot of casual appeal, so it'll probably sell really well once 360s are everywhere.

Honestly Kameo does not appeal to me in anyway. Luckily hearing praise from fellow gamers gets my interest.

It'll be interesting to see how the numbers change when all the early adopters get their 360 and the mainstream starts picking up the system. I doubt they'll stay at an average of 3 accessories per 360 for long.

The 'first 3 months' numbers will be much more interesting.
Their distribution strategy this time out really skews things.

I'm also curious to see the 'real' system vs core system ratio after 3, 6, 12 months.

yeah, that's sad. IMO it's one of the worst launch titles, and not just for all the features that were ripped out.

Borys

MS can be happy about one thing at least - they sold 100% of their launch stock.

Of course with new consoles it's always true :|

I wonder how many virtual sales (is that even a term?) they lost by not supplying i.e. 1M units? In other words: would they still sell 100% of 1M units?

You know, I think I've had more fun with Kameo than any other Xbox 360 game I've played so far. It was one of the first 360 games that I saw appear as used as well, so I guess that says something.

I think the term "potential sales" would be closer to home. Virtual means 'seemingly, but not' and wouldn't quite fit what I think you're trying to say.

- Total number of Xbox 360 game titles sold: 1,273,352.

- Total number of original Xbox game titles sold: 1,334,930.

- Total amount of money made by Xbox game titles: $72,072,729.

- Average number of games sold per Xbox 360 console: 3.9.

- Average number of accessories sold per Xbox 360 console: 3.

- Percentage of wireless controllers sold per Xbox 360 consoles sold: 98%

You realize that this means that the X360 is NOT losing much money in the U.S. despite previous reports have stated that the X360 was expected to lose $126/unit on the Premium units and $71 on the Core units.

We can estimate that the 3 accessories/unit are going to average at least around $40. Due to the fact that these are marked up by 100% of their cost. That's ~$60 made by Microsoft on accessories per console sold. Additionally, we've read estimates that state that Microsoft makes about $10 on every game sold on their system. That means they are making an additional $39 dollars.

So far, and this is still quite early, Microsoft has made $99 on every unit sold. This means that they are making mony on Core units, and are only losing around $27 on Premium units.

I thought they'd be losing a ton more money than this initially. Don't these numbers seem odd? I only bought one accessory and 2 games personally. I bet all those people buying uber-bundles must be skewing the numbers.

Honestly I'm just not psyched about any of the launch games... There's no "killer app" yet. At least not for me...

Well actually my favorite game on the 360 is that Tetris-esque tri-crystal game, whatever it's called?

Here's the top 10 list run down for u guys (my comments in green):
1. Call of Duty 2 (Activision) - designed for PC
2. Madden NFL 06 (Electronic Arts) - repeat of every other sports game out there
3. Need For Speed: Most Wanted (Electronic Arts) decent but repetitive
4. Perfect Dark Zero: Limited Edition (Microsoft Games) fun but not Halo
5. Condemned: Criminal Origins (SEGA) havent played it
6. Project Gotham Racing 3 (Microsoft Games) decent but repetitive and highly overrated
7. Perfect Dark Zero (Microsoft Games) fun but not Halo
8. Kameo: Elements of Power (Microsoft Games) gay
9. Quake 4 (Activision) designed for PC
10. NBA Live 06 (Electronic Arts) - repeat of every other sports game out there

I think the software sales look good given the low maximum potential that so few units available made. Even Kameo was sold to 23% of 360 buyers.. Not bad really.. We'll see in the long run.. How about MS getting us some freaking consoles to buy, damn it.

Roman

Well, at least 9,000 units of Kameo went to Mountain Dew winners for free.
So in short...

Kameo = Bomb
PDZ = Bomb
Rare = Smart move by NintendoIIRC Perfect Dark Zero is #21 across all platforms (cant remember where I saw the list) on a system with a relatively small install base. That's not really a "bomb."

4. Perfect Dark Zero: Limited Edition (Microsoft Games) fun but not Halo Now THAT'S gay. I'm a fucking-huge Halo fan, but within the FPS genre are different types of games. Comparing games to Halo sounds like my little brother and his middleschool friends.

Do you own the game, or did you play the demo? I have no idea where the demo takes you, but the full game is really, really nicely done. Maybe I'm not as hung up on my sexuality as you are, but the first time that you use Chilla to grab a troll and impale him on the spikes on your back, then take him off your back later and fling him into 3 other trolls - "gay" or not, it's pure gameplay bliss. Plus you get Ash, who is a fire-breathing dragon, causing trolls to catch on fire and run away screaming. Not to mention you can upgrade your elementals with better powers.

Does anyone have the top 10 for the launches of Xbox and PS2, to give a little comparison?

Mason
12-16-2005, 03:02 PM
PS2 had over 10 launch games? Kidding, here's the list:

Armored Core 2 (Agetec, Action)
DOA2: Hardcore (Tecmo, Fighting)
Dynasty Warriors 2 (Koei, Action)
ESPN International Track and Field (Konami, Sports)
ESPN X-Games Snowboarding (Konami, Sports)
Eternal Ring (Agetec, RPG)
Evergrace (Agetec, RPG)
FantaVision (SCEI, Puzzle)
Gun Griffon Blaze (Working Designs, Action)
Kessen (EA, Adventure)
Madden NFL 2001 (EA, Sports)
Midnight Club (Rockstar, Racing)
Moto GP (Namco, Racing)
NHL 2001 (EA, Sports)
Orphen (Activision, RPG)
Q-Ball Billiards Master (Take-Two Interactive, Simulation)
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 (Midway, Sports)
Ridge Racer V (Namco, Racing)
Silent Scope (Konami, Shooter)
Smuggler's Run (Rockstar, Racing-Adventure)
SSX (EA, Sports)
Street Fighter EX3 (Capcom, Fighting)
Summoner (THQ, RPG)
Swing Away (Paradise Golf in Japan) (EA, Sports)
Tekken Tag Tournament (Namco, fighting)
TimeSplitters (Eidos, First-Person Shooter)
Unreal Tournament (Infogrames, First-Person Shooter)
Wild Wild Racing (Interplay, Racing)
X-Squad (EA, Action)

Most of that stuff is of course trash. I'm sure the sports and racing games did well, but those are the only notable entries. Couple arcade fighters that probably did okay.

5. NHL 2001, Electronic Arts, $50
6. Summoner, THQ, $50
7. Ready 2 Rumble: Round 2, Midway, $49
8. Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore, Tecmo, $50

I can only assume that the people in this thread that like Kameo never played Sly Cooper or Ratchet and Clank. Kameo looks outstanding but in terms of game play, it's held back by its level design. If Rare managed to put together more levels like Thorn's Castle it would have been a great game instead of an average one.

You kidding? I thought the level designs were quite well done. Now I'm not going to say that it's better than Ratchet and Clank, or Sly... but it's at least comparable, if not equally good, and it definetly has it's own original twists. It's worth owning for anyone into action-heavy platformers.

PDZ is definitely not Halo. I love both games, but they are quite different. I was definitely one who bought into the PD0 is going to be crap hype. After buying and playing it, I must say that the game rocks. That is a game that justified my purchase of the 360.
Underpurchased but awesome is Condemned. I can't remeber another game that actually made me jump or gave me that 'panicky' feeling when you hear a noise coming from behind you. Sega deserves massive credit for that one. My only gripe with Condemned is that there really needed to be a map in the game....and you should have been able to use the forensic tools more. Xbox Live is KILLER on the 360. Hexen is addictive, Geometry Wars is harder than a frozen iron golem's nipple and I have rediscovered a love for Gauntlet when playing it with 3 other jackasses (I am on a team that is currently #1 on the Live leaderboards for co-op).
Madden didn't do it for me, but NBA 2K6 is a blast. Plus, you can win jerseys and stuff through online competition.

My only complaints are that there is no RPG on the system and that my 360 is loud. Freakishly loud. But you can't put it behind glass to silence it because you need to leave it well vented. I always have to play with the volume higher than normal. I definitely hope i can pick up an xtra one from Best Buy, because I'm EBAYing it. All those people who do not have one yet, you need to get down to Best Buy and get one.

Like what? I found that the combat was too sparse to be interesting most of the time and most of the platforming challenge was "use Major Ruin to go off a ramp then transform into Chilla when you get to the opposite wall." Other elemental warrior specific platforming (40 Below's and Flex's especially) were uninspired. And it really, really would have been nice if there were more boss battles and less battles in the Shadow Realm.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the game (I liked it enough to finish it) but outside of Thorn's Castle the levels just weren't all that exciting.

I played Kameo and couldn't get into it. It's not that it is a bad game but I just don't see as a great game either. Honestly, even with all of the polish it still feels like a budget title to me for some reason. I will be willing to bet it is one of the first marked down titles of the launch. We can't all like the same things... ..if we did life would suck and the internet would be boring as hell.

Kameo selling to about 25% of the people who bought the console isn’t bad at all. If they’re going off of NPD numbers than I believe they don’t include Wal-Mart which would seem to be one of the big sellers for that kind of game.

These numbers are amazing by the way. 3.9 attach rate in the first 2 weeks? And that’s not including Live Arcade titles.

I have to say I didn’t like Kameo at all. I thought the character design was incredibly ugly, and the graphics weren’t that great. I really disliked the way characters would run in the game – their feet moved, but it looked more like they were “skating” over the ground instead of actually taking steps on it. Not at all for me, and I generally like platformers. And frankly, the writing and acting … oh my god, that was some of the worst dialog I’ve ever had to sit through. At least it was, until I rented …

Condemned, which, while it did some things that I liked (creepy, dark, very confined, limited resources), also did some things I hate (the whole forensics thing is just too far beyond reality for me to suspend belief, the tired old “psychic” trope again). And again, the writing and acting was simply subpar, even for an episode of Unsolved Mysteries: eXtreme Serial Killer Edition. Games like this cost millions and millions of dollars. Stop having Jimmy the Copy Boy writing the dialog. Hire someone who actually knows how to write.

Ah, well. At any rate, the only other game I’ve played extensively is Call of Duty 2. It’s pretty sweet – I liked the fact that it didn’t have a health bar. You may say, but just resting is a pretty arbitrary way to restore health, but then again, so are “health packs.” I would rather see a game where you control one soldier from a squad. When your guy dies, you move on to the next one. When they’re all dead, game over. It’d be a bit more realistic. Anyways, might be a nifty experiment.

I am looking forward to trying Perfect Dark Zero. The mixed things I’ve heard are somewhat worrisome, but I liked GoldenEye and what I played of the first Perfect Dark, so it’s definitely something I want to check out. As for sports/racing games, I couldn’t care less. I won my 360 from Mountain Dew (well, actually, my father won it and gave it to me as an early Christmas present), so it’s all gravy, really. I just can’t wait to play Oblivion (oh Morrowind, how I love you – let me count the ways …).

Sales != Quality.

More sales doesn't mean better.. it just means more people were fooled into buying the game :P

I played Kameo on the Kiosks... It was ok for what I played.. I like the abilities.. it seems pretty much like a combination of games. The feel reminded me of parts of Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Rayman. Very N64ish feel, I have to say. The learning curve was higher than most games, though. And I couldn't quite figure out what I was supposed to do.. weird.

Ok I have Kameo and I have played it all the way through. I think that Kameo was a really cool idea and at times the game was fun but it has been in development for atleast 5 years. It was originally planned for the Game Cube and then Current Gen Xbox. I played it for the Current Gen Xbox at E3 two years ago and it really has not changed that much. They added more shaders and higher resolution textures. I think if the game took that long to make it should not take 11 hours to beat all the way through including all the side quests. A Zelda game, which is about the only thing you can compare it to, takes at least that long to make and it has like double the gameplay time as Kameo. Conker's Bad Fur Day, made by the same company, has more gameplay than Kameo. So my big complaint is with the length of the game.
