A spot on read telling us folks have stopped buying music. Lacking in the story is any mention of the SONY rootkit scandal. They do however admit that the current bands really suck!

Find out more here (http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB113469750280524159-cHiBMNTXDkDv9L46K_JDaIjOcy8_20061215.html?mod=tff_ main_tff_top).

Yes current bands do suck. 90% of the music I buy is on an indie label. And even then I barely buy much. Music just sucks nowadays.

There's plenty of good new music out there, but most of it isn't getting played on any mainstream media. The stuff you hear on TV and Radio is often churned out crap, but indie rock is still producing some fantastic stuff.

The problem with modern music is that it's made by posers and kids that have no ideas, opinions or beliefs of their own. Modern music is rubbish. Look at all the shitty sub-genres of rock like whiny emo, incoherent shouty growly crap and family-friendly kiddy rock. It's stopped being about the music and just become a substitute identity for people with no individuality.

12-16-2005, 12:45 PM
Yeah, music is dead as far as rock is concerned. My Chemical Romance, Falloutboy, Good Charoleotte? No thank you. Everyone is whiney as heck with the same sound, same played out distorted guitar effects, same stupid melody and absolutly horribly annoying singer.

Hip Hop is basically running the show today, and that's no better. I like rap, but not any of the crap they play on mtv and radio. The beats are terrible, the vocals are incoherant and every single song makes use of the same phrases throughout the whole song. You're really only getting one or two lines of actual creative verses. The rest are garbled up with phrases like "...in da club" and "...sippin on crisp."

Give me the good old days when artists were creative with their lyrics, trying to make a different sound, and not so willing to go as far as to remove their left nut just to get some airtime on mtv.

I like triphop, I live in Canada. I don't hear anythting I like, ever on the radio. I have to hunt down CDs in stores and by web.

I listen to classical music mostly, I don't know many new bands and it all sounds like crapy, except for a rare song that I happen to hear.

See, I feel like that's still going on with artists like The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, The Decemberists, Built to Spill, and so on. And Beck. Beck's not afraid to use crazy lyrics and weirds sounds in his music. I hate most bands that people who listen to MTV love, but I'm certainly not starved of music.

On topic, do I buy music? Not as much as I used to, but if a band impresses me, I like to support them. I just wish more of my money actually went to the artists.

I didn't read this because I am a radio junkie. . . I like the surprise of what is coming next, and I have TWO commercial free college radio stations in my area that play alternative music. . . plus, I love NPR too.

Still, did they make no mention of the Ipod? I know about 5 people who never stole anything from the Internet until they got an Ipod and now they are all about piracy.

And no, rock is not dead.. far from it... take some time to search for good bands and you will find it.

I still buy CDs (Mainly from independent labels), because i like to have the copy on my hands.. not just a Thosiba rewritable disk with pen ink over it., just yesterday i bought a good album from Arch Enemy (http://www.archenemy.net) (called Wages of Sin)... its brutal and great....the finnest swedish metal you'll find out there

There's way too much crap out there to really make you want to buy a CD. At best they can hope consumers buy a track or two off of Napster or iTunes. Sure, I'm pretty certain games are eating away at their sales, people would rather spend their money on one of the many $20 games than on Britney Spear's remix disc #2375 or 50 Cent's sountrack album for his movie that fell flat on its ass. I mean why bother buying a CD for the one song you might kind of enjoy anyway, just tune to one of your local ClearChannel drone stations and they'll play that one song for you over and over every 5 minutes until your ears bleed.

Kind of off-topic, why do they keep mentioning Virgin Megastores, those are the worse places to buy anything. I got a $25 off coupon from them, went in to buy a DVD set, too bad they all were selling for $30 over MSRP. I'm frankly shocked they are still in business.

Beck was great around Odeley/Midnight Vultures era. Sea Change was really soft and his "return to his roots" stuff with Guero is just embarrasing, IMO.

I can't stand it when people say music nowadays sucks. Music has never, and will never, suck. There is absolutely TONS of music being made every day. Just because it's not being played by Clearchannel or Viacom doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I can't believe I'm bringing up this site, but some of you need to go to pitchforkmedia.com And this is only indie rock, mind you, not country/hip hop/whatever. If you can say that you have heard of all of the bands that are listed in some form on the front page, and that you think all of that music sucks, then I tip my hat to you. Otherwise, music doesn't suck, just MTV/Muchmusic/Fuse, and your local shitty radio sucks.

Downloading music is illegal, and I'm breaking the law IF i dled music illegally.

But I dont see the point in buying new cd's now a days. Especially rap music. Back in the day if you bought an album the whole thing was pretty decent. Like you could play the whole thing straight.

Now a days you buy a cd for one good song and that costs 9 dollars. But for free you can dl ARES or some other program and dl it for free.

Since so many people are dling one or two songs here and there it is impossible for the government to stop anyone. I'm not saying that it makes it right, but at the same time it is ruining the industry. Two factors are at play, crappy artists releasing crap, and the ability to dl any song you want for free in about 20 seconds.

You should shoot your vocalist. . . he sounds like he is trying to sound like Dylain, but you know. . . sucky.

Also, I counted a minute on "Mountain Energei" of just basic drumbeat and bass line. Then I tried "Youwanner" and the damn lead vocalist slurs every bit into a nasal flat fade. . . damn.

Yeah, the way i see it, while downloading music is illegal, it is far from wrong. There are so few artists who make money from their CD's most bands support themselves by touring, originally the recording industry was a promoting type business, that would make the records so that people would see a bands shows. The recording industry has gotten way too greedy, outright stealing music from the artists themselves. I think if they are dying, well, they did it to themselves, they should have evolved with the times. There are tons of ways that they could have made money from this download type of distributiion, but they have wantonly pissed on just about every option they have. The rootkit fiasco, and everything else just seems to punish the people who are stupid enough to BUY the cd's instead of downloading them. PS Coheed and Cambria is a great band, and if you actually listen to the lyrics, you may just learn something about epic storytelling as well.

This is true, although personally I think music started going downhill after wagner ;). There are good acts out there, I saw mono live recently and I thought they were the bees knees and the wasps testicles, but people have the most retarded concept of time due to the media. Shit there was 300 years between Shostakovich and Bach, people weren't sitting in the meantime going man shit nothings happened. It's like people expect a complete revolutionary change in every artform on an annual basis rather than evolution, I think its because everything gets so hyped all the time, every new band is the new beatles, the new stones or the new hendrix.

In Flames is fucking AWESOME, if you want their harder stuff check out Colony and Clayman, their newer stuff thought is WAY different, I like it but thats not the opinion you'll get from many. Also Darkest Hour is a great band if your into metal.

Edit: While your at it check out Killswitch Engage, they're a really good band aswell.

If none of you have listened to Elvenking, I strongly recommend you check out their cd Heathenreel.

Anyone who says there aren't any good bands anymore might want to take their fingers out of their ears.

I actually buy a ton of music. Being a semi-audiophile I can't stand mp3 compression so owning the cd is the only way to guarantee audio quality. I probably buy one cd per week on average.

But I mainly buy older stuff, which is all found for cheap at used cd shops. Cd's are too #$^%ing expensive and I'm glad they recognized that in that article.

There are some good bands out too but they are few and far between. I generally find about one new band per year that is awesome, my favorite discovery of 2005 would have to be rise against (although I think the cd technically came out in 2004).
