Icelandic MMO EVE Online has received its second 'content patch' - a free expansion pack, more or less. The new builds are available (http://www.eve-online.com/news/newsOfEve.asp?newsID=325) and the servers have gone back online with the Red Moon Rising changes, fixes and content applied.
Red Moon Rising adds an impressive array of new features and improvements (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/), including Asian bloodlines and some ridiculously large ships (http://www.eve-files.com/media/12/eve_chart-rmr.jpg).

I mean it, those ships are monstrous. Check out the Eiffel tower in the bottom left corner of the pic (http://www.eve-files.com/media/12/eve_chart-rmr.jpg) to get some idea...

I really wish I got into this game ages ago, as it is I can't really support 3 MMOGs, hell I can't do 2 timewise as it is.

I tried a trial and just couldnt get into it. Seems more economy/social based than actualy fun gameplay. The new ships looks awesome though.

Nothing beats EVE's PVP experience imo, because of the relatively big death penalty. I've been playing for over two and a half years and still get adrenaline rushes.

ships are huge soemthign like 20km accross.
once you played the game for 6-7 months you can actualy stop paying for it and buy timecards with ingame currency. i been playing the game for 2 years and only realy spend about 100 bucks on it.
my only problem is the lag when you have 100 ships from each alliance duking it out

Is the PvP system voluntary? Do you have to "want" to attack (and be attacked) other players or is it open season on anyone? "Back in the day" this is exactly what drove me away from UO.
I seem to remember something about the interface being far more complicated than it needed to be and the tutorial being far from adequate (for me anyway). This was quite some time ago so I could be wrong about what the tutorial is like now.
Would those of you playing it say that it is easy to get newbie type question awswered? Are you more likely to get a smartass response to questions that might be seen to be 'obvious".

The tutorial explains everything you need to know to get started in the game ( i just started 2 months ago or so). Any other questions you have are usually answered very quickly in the newbie chat. The learning curve isnt as big as it seems at first, by the time i was done with the free trial i had a very good grasp on the game mechanics.

The PvP is open season in the lawless outskirt regions. In the central regions attacking innocents leads to varying repercussions depending on the security rating of the system you're in. Though you can declare war on other groups (max 3 at any time) for a cost.
Yes the interface is fairly complex compared to other mmo's, but so is the game. The tutorials recently had a big overhaul and there's a big new player guide on the site.
From what I hear from new players in the forums, most people in the newbie corp chat channels are helpful and mature.

I remember when I played the trial, everyone was very helpful. If only this was 4 years ago or so, my mind was more stable back then.

holy crap, i had a caldari frigate one of the "bunch of pixels" and had seen my fair share of the dreadnaughts and battleships but those things are insane.
one of the guys at work just said it wasn't a ship, it's a floating city. More like continent!
Makes me want to start playing again sooo much.

Forgot to post the PR blurb:The Blood Moon of War is waxing as the technological advances of Alliances rival those of the Empires. New implements of destruction force battle lines to be redrawn. Research, Manufacturing and Resource Gathering have advanced to keep up with the appetite of War. Alliances are bending the Empires to their will with the encroachment of Starbases into what was previously secure space and Pilots are taking protection of themselves and their assets into their own hands. This is not an easy fight, as Factions turn their weapons of war against the Alliances, Corporations and Pilots of EVE. The Red Moon is Rising; Death follows in its path.
Features
39 new ships, including:
Titans (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#titans)
Carriers & Motherships (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#carriers&motherships)
Fighters (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#fighters) and
23 other Tech 2 Ships (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#tech2ships).
Players are able to control more of the EVE Universe, as Starbase Structures (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#starbasesandsovereignty) may be deployed in higher security space than before.
Technological advances have been made in Weapons & Modules, Drones (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#dronesrevisited), Cloning (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#projectrebirth), Research & Manufacturing and Mining (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#needfulthingsformining).
4 new bloodlines (http://www.eve-online.com/features/redmoonrising/detail.asp#bloodlines) are available, one for each Empire race. Bloodlines will be deployed in their own content update slated for January, 2006.
New COSMOS Constellations have been added to the Amarr Empire and Gallente Federation.
Players are able to take matters into their own hands to protect themselves and their resources with the 'Eye for an Eye' and JetCan flagging changes.
NPCs are more able to protect themselves with the introduction of Elite NPC module use.
Combat revisions, Optimization changes, Tractor beams and much, much more await you!

I love this game, I wish I had time to play it more often. If I hit the lottery I'm going to retire and play this game all day.

sounds like an intersting game, other then me despising any mmog that doesn't allow to opt out of all pvp. and me despising the all mmog's for being wastes of time (literally).

This sounds fair enough as long as the regions are clearly designated as to what you need to worry about. What disliked about UO is that, my character a low "level" character, would be wondering around in the woods increasing my skills and not bothering anyone when a group of 10 or so characters would come out of nowhere and attack me without cause. This became super-frustrating so I quit. Aside from that, I really enjoyed the game. Perhaps I'll give the free trial a go. Sounds like the tutorial has been modified to be more newbie friendly. Insurance company wants to keep rates down or something. :)

Man, if I could go for any MMO, this would be it. I'm a sucker for addictive shit though, and this game would ruin me.

Yeah the PVP areas are clearly marked. It is a pretty intuitive design to differentiate between the areas. You can technically attack anyone anywhere but if it is in policed space then the cop ships will wup your butt.
It is complicated but an awesome game. Play it. You can opt out of PVP if you want by just staying in "safe" space all the time. Lots of people do it.

This game sounds great. I just don't have the time to put into it. I'll have to stick to my FPS,Fighters,RTS :(
I would love to be a big part of a space drama with fighters, cruisers and super battleships.
This is a game I would get into if I didn't have to work :D

I'm currently on the third day of my free trial, and I am extremely impressed with the game. The amount of depth, complexity, and open endedness is simply amazing. I mean...you can do anything. It's mind boggling when I try to load out my ship and decide what skills to use.
Also, I haven't been PKed yet. But I can't wait for the day when I'm mining on the edge of space and end up fighting a wanted player for my life. Or maybe I'll just be a bounty hunter and track those bastards down. Or...you know what I think I'll be a pirate lurk in those outskirts. Actually, it's too dangerous, I'm just going to trade from station to station.

I can't believe titans are finally in the game. I think this means eve is feature complete.. They were talking about titans way back when the game was still in beta and everyone was theorizing then about how they would be handled.
Eve is a fantastic game for the right kind of person. And its hell if your not that kind of person. I played in beta, I played more at launch for about 3 months then I dropped it. Picked it back up about 3 months ago and played for about a month and a half and found myself logging in just to set skills and then log off. So I dropped it again. The community is surprising helpful considering that most of them would kill you without a second thought if they found you in unprotected space in an inferior ship.
Its probably the most professional MMO I've ever played and very well done, but its also one of the slowest moving if your not into pvp so I think I'll pass again.

The game is highly impressive for about the first month, and then it gets to be a big of a drag. If you can push on through the draggy parts, I hear that the game goes from ok to supremely badass once your out in non-policed space cruising around with your Corp. or the Alliance your Corp. is allied with. It does take a LOT of time to get there however, and there is no power leveling at all. Every skill has a set time to learn (which you can decrease by upping your learning skills), so there are no overnight Battleship pilots like there are overnight top level warriors in WoW. Of course, by overnight I mean weeks. Eve takes literally years to get into "high levels".

I tried the Eve 7 day trial and had a blast. It looked like a pretty deep game with lots of player politics. Also, I thought the leveling system in Eve was one of the best of any MMORPG. It's absolutely awesome for the casual player. While you're still grinding for cash, they at least remove the grind for exp.
After my 7 days I realized there is no way in hell I had time for a game like Eve, but I sure wish I did!

It is pretty much like having a second job. I liked the game a lot, but just don't have that kind of time to invest in a hobby.

What is it with EVE getting so much press lately? I know it came out quite some time ago but in the last month I've seen mentions of it on several websites and even in The Escapist. I have to say, I'm very curious. I might give the trial a try, though the monthly cost might be the deciding factor as I'm still playing WoW and don't have time to spend on it...

It's an intelligent game. News sources (especially The Escapist) like it, but it doesn't have the mass of kids to bump up player numbers. Thank god.
It seems they are still having massive difficulties, even after the patch went out. Might be best to leave it a few days before starting that subscription...

Really? I'm not terribly surprised. MMO's post-patch are always a little flakey for a few days. Ah well. Back to Darwinia I go.

Every time I see an article about Eve, I want to give it a try.
Then I remember reading this:

and I don't want to play it at all. Great read, though.

I've been in EVE for 3 months now, and you could 'power level' to train just to the titan skills, which would still take about 5 months, but then you would not have any skill or ability flying it :)
PVP Can be avoided, and the devs add content for the carebears out there in addition to the 0.0 hardcore pilots. But the first time you enter .4 space and you know everything on you can be lost if you mess around, you get a rush that I only remember from my first days of multiplayer gaming.
Give EVE A try, try your hand at a battle frigate or your ability to pay the market mining and trading.
