Thanks to Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com) for the news (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=7526).
Showing the still-desperate state of Xbox 360 console supply as Christmas approaches, representatives from U.S. online firm CE Buys have announced that that the company is now taking sign-ups for its premium alert service mailing list. The service informs consumers (for a $39 yearly fee) when online merchants have video game consoles in stock - with the Xbox 360 being used as a prominent example.
Maybe it's just me, but this seems like a rip-off.

fucking retarded. Pay $40 for them to notify you "Store X has the console in stock!"... and by the time you get there, it's out of stock. Hello....
Maybe in another 6 months when the demand and supply have reached a happier medium this would actually WORK to the subscriber's advantage, but uh... yeah... what Weasel said... just dial the damn phone and make a call. If you can't be bothered to do that much for yourself, you're probably too lazy to enjoy the 360 anyway.

Hey, if there are people who would actually pay for something like that, more power to the company for offering it. I certainly wouldn't.

Exactly. It is no fault of the company for offering this service. It is the fault of dumbasses if they pay to use it. Heck, if people wanted to give me money to spit on them then I would start up a company that did exactly that.
I could see a use if they would not only inform you of the product, but also order it for you the instant it is there so you get one.

It would be better if it was like a Darwin Award.

Gosh gee! Maybe this system will be as reliable as dropping down money for a pre-order! You give them your money and you get a waiting list: but if you buy more you can change you spot on that list.
Woohoo! I'm in!

This is especially dumb as it's online stores only. Who the fuck cares if the $1,200 are back in stock? At least they are catering to the right demographic: The super rich who don't value a dollar.

I actually got a 360 the other day using the free service at www.notify360.com (which is delayed by 30 minutes as opposed to the alert you pay for, which is instant). I'm gonna have to pull some shady bundle returns, but whatever.
