Remember the people touting the success of the most recent House of the Dead game? Well, they didn't know what they were talking about (http://www.edge-online.com/news/house-dead-overkill-sells-45k).
The light gun game from Sega and U.K.-based Headstrong Games sold 45K units during the month of February, NPD told Edge. The game launched February 10.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier said it landed around the 50th spot in the top-100 SKUs for the month in unit sales.
Sega's lineup of M-rated Wii games includes House of the Dead: Overkill, Platinum Games' MadWorld (launched in March) and June's The Conduit, from High Voltage Software.
This is just sad...

Well, the story was funny but the game had zero difficulty. Even on Director's Cut mode, it was a shooting gallery. Unlimited ammo automatics? A ton of life points? That was nothing like the previous House of the Dead series.
The fiancee and I beat it (http://www.twiddlegeek.com/post/reviews/house-of-the-dead-overkill/) in a weekend. Enjoyed the story, breezed through the game.

Darn shame.

I forsee Madworld being equally unprofitable.

I heard it was not very good. A game has to be somewhat decent if it's going to sell any copies I don't care what system it's on. I heard Madworld was good but you can beat it in 5 hours. And there is little replay value to it. Those reasons are probably why both titles will not do well.

MadWorld is really good, and it has far more than 5 hours of gameplay. You'll get a review of it in a week or two from me.
Personally, I think that the casual gamer won't buy these titles, and hardcore gamers have given up on the console.
That could just be my opinion though.

I do too. But I did my part.

Overkill has a very respectable 79% on Metacritic. That's at least decent. I'm pretty sure that's the most highly rated of the light gun games. I'm having a blast with Overkill.
Unfortunately, it just doesn't hit the majority of the Wii install base.

zero difficulty sounds great to me. much funner than the RE5 crap. that along with being rated as the most profane game by the guiness book of world records?
sounds like i should check this one out.

pretty much the same with me, cleaned the dust off of it and sold it on ebay last year. I was hoping to use it as a movie/game console for my daughter eventually, but it doesn't play movies.
I bought HOTD: Overkill, loved it. All of my friends loved it, it was just all around a wonderful spoof of grindhouse movies, and also a decent game.
Hence the problem, the gameplay was surprisingly second to the dialogue and the concept. Still a hell of a lot of fun.
MadWorld is fucking awesome so far; i haven't played it as much as i should have.

This is disappointing, cause it can only lead to less developers even trying to release these sorts of games on the Wii, and sticking to sales assured casual titles. I did my part and bought HOTD and will be getting MadWorld later this week.
I honestly would call HotD: Overkill a success with less than 500k sales worldwide. It was a low budget game for a niche market; come back to me in a few months. 250k sales in america alone will probably more than cover the creation of the game and profit.

It was no House of the Dead 2, so I'm not surprised. I also think that the Guncon3 is a better light gun than the wiimote. I really hope that we see more Guncon3 games...Sega just needs to go in that direction.

We can call it a success all we want, but, publishers want larger numbers than that to entice them to make more non-casual games for the system.

I'm not so sure about that, stuff like No More Heroes was considered a "success", enough to generate a sequel, and it sold less than 300k (i believe)

Oh you mean numbers like these:
Guitar Hero 3 - 2.37M (360) 830k (PS3) 2.75M (Wii)
Guitar Hero: World Tour - 924k (360) 466k (PS3) 1.39M (Wii)
Lego Indiana Jones - 241k (360), 142k (PS3), 456k (Wii)
Shaun White - 271k (360), 141k (PS3), 537k (Wii)
Sonic Unleashed - 113k (360), 69k (PS3), 315k (Wii)
Tiger Woods 09 - 216k (360), 174k (PS3), 565k (Wii)
Star Wars Force Unleashed - 823k (360) 464k (PS3) 626k (Wii) 175k (DS) 263k (PSP) 352k (PS2)
Thanks to the big NPD leak at GAF, we have a better picture of overall sales and so far it looks like on 90% of multi-skus the Wii version outsells the PS3 version and in some cases even the 360 version.
Seriously, Sega did jack shit to advertise this game to you know, people other than gamers and they are doing the same with MadWorld, which is a crime. But it's Sega, they can't even make a good Sonic game anymore.
