There has been something of a panic in Germany following the discovery that the countries recent school shooter played Counter Strike. One retailer has reacted in a rather over-the-top manner. From Reuters. (http://www.reuters.com)

German retail chain Galeria Kaufhof will pull violent films and video games from its shelves in response to the school shooting last week that shocked and horrified the country.

Beginning in April, Kaufhof, one of the country's largest retailers, will no longer stock films or games sold with an 18-plus rating, meaning material judged inappropriate for young people. The rating is usually reserved for violent material, including horror films and first-person-shooter games.

Violent video games have come under attack here in the wake of last week's shooting, in which a former student gunned down 15 people at a high school in southern Germany. Media reports and local politicians have pointed to the fact that the shooter played popular video game "Counter Strike" as a factor in the massacre.

There have been calls to ban such material outright.

"I think (Kaufhof's decision) is a complete overreaction ... it borders on impulsive hysteria," said Stephan Reichart, managing director at German video game developers association G.A.M.E. "It would be sufficient if retailers made sure their cashiers don't sell this material to young people."

I am stunned.

Well, at least it they didn't isolate the pulled content to just videogames.

And really, moral issues aside, this is the perfect business move to make in the face of a global financial crisis; remove customer attracting products from your shelves.

It's perfect.

Germany seems to have it in for video games. They've been pulling anything with Nazi references for a while, and now this. I can't believe they really think that Counter-Strike causes these shootings. I'm going to take a wild guess that the kids that did this probably had some sort of mental and social problems. Let's overlook that though, we all know games are what makes you go out and kill.

They have banned the Swastika image since WW2, it has nothing to do with games just a law they passed a long time ago. This pulling of content from their store is just a stunt that will see increase sales (they hope) and they will reintroduce the content quitely later down thew road.

I have noticed that they compensate for the lack of violent media with an over abundance of porn. Nothing wrong with that if you ask me

Yet it tends to be some of the most violent or depraved porn in existence. Example wiki info here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Thompson_Productions). I do love GGG though...

Germany is ass backward.

Let me give you some insight on this topic.

Everytime a shooting happens, the discussion about the 'killergames' is started again. To be honest, try to find any young person not playing a videogame... so that must be the issue, right?

...

Sigh. The USK logo (age rating) is so big now, it takes up a quarter of a Nintendo DS front cover! That was decided even before the latest shooting.

Games don't kill people.

We don't have anyone to point our fingers at or blame so video games it is. Thats the easy way out instead of finding the true source of the problem that individual may have.
IDIOTS!

I love Germany! I'm pretty sure all this stuff occured here after Columbine....It fades and the stuff returns.

Things that will get you arrested:

1. Saying Sieg Heil!
2. Swastikas
3. Being a scientologist
4. Saying Heil Hitler

Yeah, it's a democracy with a few really strange twists. Most younger Germans are a bit confused by the whole censorship of Nazi imagery. Makes it seem cooler some how. Still Walking in downtown Berlin past the bombed out cathedral would be enough to put me off that whole "master race" thing!

The Germans do love their overreaction and blame.

Maybe they can round up all the violent media and put them on trains to "holding facilities", you know, since that is the cause of all of Germany's problems.

Ok, thats enough of that.
