Introversion's fantastic Darwinia is now available to play through Steam. Not much else to say about that, except, if you haven't played this game, you should do yourself a favor and remedy that. (http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/index.php?area=game&AppId=1500&l=english&s=0&i=&a=92,219)
Now get out there and destroy those viruses!

Not really sure of all the "anyones" out there, you chose Meg Ryan but I suppose she qualifies as "anyone".

It would be cool if they sold Uplink on steam too...

Steam blows.
Thank you for moving humanity that much closer to a utopian society.
In other news I think I'll be playing this one over the weekend once I get my check. Or maybe I'll just hijack my flatmates pc to play it.

Yeah, "anyone".You, your mother, your brother, your third grade teacher, your neighbor, your mailman, Meg Ryan, Adam Sandler, Cher, Al Roker, Regis Philben, anyone. I didn't know "anyone" was a complex term.
Also, Steam is freaking great. No reasons to not like it, Ive had no trouble at all with it and I love having everything organized, I wish I could add all my games into it.

I would love steam if valve didn't own it.. however, they do.. and it angers me in many ways.
Valve isn't very competent... If GOOGLE owned it, or ANYBODY competent owned it.. i'd like it a lot more.
Valve throws you around loops to get a fix for a problem.. their updates break shit, their friends list has been down for a long time now.. it takes a decent amount of resources (especially when updating.. it pegged 100% of my CPU for 10 minutes while it updated)
It's a LOT better than it used to be.. and it seems to be getting better.. but hell, any other company could have done a hell of a lot better within the last year or so than valve has done

Uhh... like I said Ive had no problems. Ive got a great computer and cable internet if that really matters[even with my old system[generic 512ram/1600+proc]. I recentley had to reinstall Steam, and ALL of my games on a new system, no problems at all. I didnt lose my password like a dumbass and rant on a forum because Steam made me verify who I was and I couldnt get my mommies credit card for it. Also it never takes up many resources and you can easily pause updating and let it to it when youre not using your computer. So please think of legitimate reasons and get back to me. And who cares about the "friends list" Ive nver cared to try to use it, yeah I know its fucked but still. Theres a thing called "X Fire", basically everyone has it... if not they suck its awesome...
I had to reinstall tonight... .thank god I remembered my password. When steam was new I hated it. It did have problems then. It seems like lately it has been great. Fast downloading and like Suicidal Shizuru said, it doesn't seem to take up many resources.

Steam did, actually, blow very much, for all you band-wagoners that have forgotten everything before HL2. (What? You need an internet connection to play HL2 single player? Yay, Steam is the best!! I'm so happy!) But Valve has cleaned it up incredibly since then and now everything's fine.

Alright, I don't mind if you like using software that doesn't work as good as it's supposed to.
Honestly you guys complain "THE GAME IT IS BUGGY!!" yet when something you like is buggy it's perfectly fine and people need to "get over it."
I like steam, man. Don't get me wrong. It's just the stupid bullshit Valve does.
And the friends list made stuff a lot easier, and better. However, one of the side reasons to get steam is gone, and hasn't worked for over a year.
The problems with valve I'm talking about is this.. I had a problem with datacache.dll.. my games (all of them in steam) kept crashing with that error. I looked it up, and didn't find too much help. Here's the help page.
http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=278&p_created=1100821608&p_sid=D_OyM4Xh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfc m93X2NudD0yNzkmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N 2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1
Going down the list, most of these are the most retarded suggestions I've EVER heard. They basically say, strip your computer down if you want to play this game.
Uninstalling programs.. disabling trueform, catalyst AI, don't overclock, disable pagefile (generally NOT recommended), disable everything basically running on your damn system...
It's ridiculous. However, #14 DID fix the problem. adding +mat_forcehardwaresync 0. All the other troubleshooting procedures are complete bullshit! I could understand a few of them if EVERY GAME was affected.. however, it's only steam. It's STEAM that's broken, and it's like they don't ever admit it.. ever. They blame YOUR computer.
But it's fixed.. and while that's good, it's still a pain in the ass to get it done.
The resources thing.. it is better, definitely. But from a clean install, the thing does rape my system to hell and back. It should run in the background with as little performance hit as possible.

I hate Steam because when I first got HL2, I hadn't gotten the internet at my new place yet... and I couldn't play SINGLEPLAYER because I had to register online. This also happened to me a few more times because my internet would go down and magically Steam would forget my information so GG Half-life2 SINGLEPLAYER OFFLINE BECAUSE I HAVE TO BE ONLINE TO CONTACT VALVE HEADQUARTERS IN ORDER TO PLAY THE FUCKING GAME BY MYSELF.

Played the Darwinia demo and liked it. I did however have a few issues with it.
Gameplay: The interface is sparse and intially confused me. After 20 minutes I didn't have any more problems with it.
Performance: Both my laptop and my desktop chugged repeatedly when panning around the demo level. Neither are horribly outdated and possess decent proccessors and graphics cards. Both are ATi though. Maybe it's just a problem with OpenGL performance on ATi... again.
Once I shut off the demo, nothing compelled me to play it again (except to test it on my laptop). I certainly wouldn't pay money for it. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea though.

As for the Steam issues, bad luck for you, too bad. Also, Ive NEVER had trouble playing a game offline. I know Steam use to suck, I never used it until HL2 because I hated it on other systems. Now its great though. What about your OS? Lets go back a few versions and see how you like it. Oh wait you like what you have now. Its the same retarded comparison. "Stupid bullshit Valve does"? You mean suggesting things to fix common problems? All games have lists like this...
As for Darwinia... Its a really lacking game, graphically, so you must have a crap setup. The interface is great, never confused me, If you read what the guy said it made everything easy to learn. The fun gameplay[I like RTS in general, but basically every genre], gorgeous presentation and sympathy for the Darwinians and Dr Sepulveda led me to instantly pre order it. Been playing all night since I noticed it was released.
MasterEvilAce please post your system specs.

I just finished the demo. It was pretty fun, but not as much as the hype suggested. Of course, tutorials usually aren't :D I think I'm going to download the full game just to support the independents (and so SOMETHING can rip me away from world of warcraft).

Where it gets fun, is when your darwinian get frickin lasers, grenades too. At that point its a mix of god game, rts and third person shooter.
I hope that more mods are created for it, what with all of this extra attention.

My ATI is having no problems at all. And as far as Steam goes, I like it, but I would like the friends list to work. The Electronic Arts downloader? Now THERE'S a piece of crap.

Steam has been ok for me so far, from hl2 silver package pre-order to darwinia pre-order, though I do have one complaint. Their credit card verification service is terribly anal. Typically a site or store will only crosscheck your zipcode with your credit info, to make sure it's legit. Steam also crosschecks your street address...which doesn't sound like a bad idea but(as an example, with fake number and street):
100 Blue Road, East doesn't work
100 Blue Road East doesn't work
100 Blue Road E doesn't work
100 Blue Rd E does work
Because that's the exact address on the statement from my card. That's too asinine and anal, it's not like I've ever purposefully written the address abbreviated like that, so it means someone at that company decided my address was too long and had to shorten it. It took me 2 days to find out the problem, though in Steam support's favor, they responded to my support email quickly and explained the thing causing it to be declined(had to go find some mail from the card company to figure it out) but ugh, was quite pissed for those 2 days:)

"As good as it's supposed to" as defined by... you? I don't think anyone's going to argue that Steam has NO problems whatsoever, but I'd say right now the positives far outweigh the negatives.

I've never understood the people who rant about how inconvient it is to have to verify a game online. I guess I could see if they wrote in to a newspaper, or were shouting on the street about it, but these people are usually complaining about it on a forum. You, online... These people are an enigma wrapped in a paradox frosted with confusion.
Let's say you were really poor at the moment.. ..and you for the next week you only had $20 to spend on one steam game. Would you pick DoD source or Darwinia? I have been spending too much money on that stupid Live Arcade stuff. I am only going to allow myself to buy one Steam game at the moment. I am thinking DoD... ..anyone here playing it? BTW, I did enjoy the Darwinia demo but is it worth giving up DoD for a while?

Both are great, but Darwinia's fresher if you're looking for something unique or something singleplayer. DoD's multiplayer is good, but it's nothing new. All up to your preferences, but I'd go with Darwinia.

This game is definitely worth the pick up, after you get to like the 3rd or 4th level it becomes a lot more enjoyable. By that time you have a handful of upgrades and you get a lot more control over your darwinians. Like someone else said, give your darwinians their first upgrade ASAP and it's awesome.
I would pick this over DoD also because you could always play CS or HL2 for your FPS fix but this is a fun change =)
And on the note of Steam problems, is it possible to play Darwinia and Half Life 2 offline? I haven't tried recently but I know you couldn't before

I'll probably get this, if only because Uplink was so awesome and I want Introversion to keep making great games. I remember trying the demo a while ago and enjoying it. For $19.95, it's a steal. I've paid far more for far crappier, derivative games.
If I can remember my steam account info, that is...
EDIT: Wow, I love this game. I don't recall the demo having the opening sequence which, like Uplink, really sets the tone for the game. I can't wait to play this on my day off tomorrow, especially with the 8 feet of snow they're predicting overnight.
