I just recieved January edition of the Official Xbox Magazine, which includes playable demos of Xbox360 games including King Kong, Kameo, and Full Auto. In addition, OXM has implemented a "point" system similar to Gamer Points whereby you earn points for watching trailers and playing demos to unlock special content. The playable Full Auto demo features one track and is also suppose to be available on Live later this month for those that don't wish to seek out the OXM demo.

Um, but isn't this stuff (Demos and trailers) available free for download? Or are you required to buy OXM to "unlock" the stuff online?
Kinda weird...

So the only way at the moment to get the full auto demo is getting the magazine? Right??

I suspect that's for the people who don't have broadband, the same way they've included other content that people could also download over live.
Admittedly, this does seem a little silly now...I think the people who'd be 360 early adopters would also have high speed internet. And now that they can get a silver account for free, there's no real excuse to not be on Live, unless they live in a very remote area that doesn't offer it or something.
As for unlocking...I haven't gotten the new issue or a 360 yet, so can't answer that.

I can see where this point system is heading. Later on you'll have to watch so many "points" worth of commercials to get to see trailers and demos.

I like how the last two OXM disks have had King King demos three times, twice for Xbox and once for 360. Also, I would like to comment on the idiocy that has some of the videos only playable on a 360. I don't have a 360. I'd like to watch the videos, they might interest me in buying a 360. Not being able to watch the videos makes me more hostile to the 360.
Anyway, how's the Full Auto demo?

The point system is ridiculous. Anyone who doesnt see it as a bs marketing ploy incognito is one slow person. I cant wait for Halo 3 to say "Buy this SPECIAL PRO GAMER UBZ0R EDITION for $20 more and get a bonus 10,000 gamer points!!!!!??!~~!!!, oh and a trailer for Halo 2!!!"

The point system is certainly being used for a marketing end. There are 1,000 points on this demo and you get 25-50 points for watching all the ads and trailers. That's right... you get points for watching the ads. Only 25 a piece for two brief ones. But it is very clear that they are using the "super secret" content as bate. It's a clever advertising method and at least a little entertaining (even though it is devious), so I don't mind too much.
As for Full Auto, I was pleasantly surprised. The controls are very tight and responsive and remind you more of a Twisted Metal feel than an a racing sim. The action was fast pace and it was impressive how much of the scenery you could blow up to get reactions. The game plays similar to Burnout in many regards, but with the addition of weapons. Graphically it looks sharp, but not really above a high quality original Xbox game. With the exception of a few odd time delays which I'm sure will be buttoned up for the final version, the game plays incredibly smoothly. It looks like Sega may actually start making quality game again.

I was going to rag on you for obviously not reading the last sentence of the post ("... and is also suppose to be available on Live later this month ...")
But the fact is, I missed it too when I first read it.
I was wondering how downloadable demos and OXM were going to co-exist (obviously non-broadband users still need the OXM disc, but losing all broadband users that "just want the demos" is probably a pretty beefy chunk). I guess OXM's getting a little lead time on demos, so the raging gotta-have-it-this-second ADHD gamers will still go get OXM.

Makes sense. Don't they do this for some PC demos?

Yeah, except that the installer would be on the net minutes after the first subscribers got their advanced copies. ;)

Considering that downloading Gauntlet took me >15 minutes last night, I would rather pop in a disk than deal with the waiting time on some demos.
Full Auto plays very similar to Burnout with the addition of weapons. The Red Car has missles and a machine gun. The Yellow Car has a shotgun and grenades. And when you start getting heat from behind, there is not much you can do other than "hit the brakes and let them fly on by" as Maverick used to say.

I would love to be able to tell y'all how the demo disk stacks up, but my mail delivery person took a bite out of my disk and it's fubar as a result!

Good information. I'm looking forward to OXM's first 360-friendly issue / DVD. I was a little disappointed when I inserted last month's DVD only to have it check for an update on Live and tell me sorry check back later heh. I didn't think an OXM DVD would need that type of support, just the games on it. No big.
EternalGamer,
Are these Gamerscore points or something that only exists in the OXM DVD session so to speak? I don't mind playing along with this plan...the Live points system has already taken me back to the old school arcade high score list mentality and I'm a newly reborn points collecting whore machine - w00t!
Now, back to taking down NFS:MW Blacklist member Izzy :-)

The points, as far as I can tell, are strictly for OXM, but apparently they carry over from disc to disc as it tells you what your current "level" is. On one hand, I think it's cooler than just hiding stuff that you have to find via random button presses. On the other hand, making people WATCH trailers and ads is kind of lame.
