Venturebeat is reporting (http://venturebeat.com/2009/03/16/gazillion-to-launch-series-of-major-online-games-with-marvel-comics-characters/) that game developer Gazillion Entertainment (http://gazillion.com/) has signed a 10-year contract with Marvel Entertainment to develop online games using Marvel characters, starting with a game based on the upcoming Marvel Super Hero Squad cartoon and eventually branching out into a title called Marvel Universe.

The first game is a kid-oriented online world based on brand-new Marvel property Super Hero Squad. This show for kids will debut on the Cartoon Network in the fall and the game will debut sometime in 2010. Gazillion, based in San Mateo, Calif., has already been working on it for a year.

Heretofore unknown, Gazillion is unveiling itself as one of the most ambitious game startups in the world. It has 300 employees and is squarely focused as a pure play company developing online game worlds for the mass market, with game projects based on Marvel, LEGO, and its own original properties.

Hope the Marvel Universe is multi. I'm really looking forward to DCU Online but if they bring this out on the PS3 it'll create a good bit of competition which can only serve to make both games better post-launch.

If you read the article (which most sites don't seem to have bothered doing) it doesn't really look like they are out to compete with DCU or any other big MMORPG. They are going for that whole Disney 'Pirates of the Caribbean' crowd by pairing up MMO's with cartoons.

Even with the "Marvel Universe" one? I get it with the Superhero Squad but...

Beyond the Super Hero Squad game, Gazillion will continue with its own version of a giant Marvel game, dubbed Marvel Universe, for both the PC and video game consoles.

Marvel Universe > DC Universe

But as far as MMOs go, for some strange reason I think I'd have more fun playing around in Gotham, Metropolis, Arkham Asylum, etc., than alternate realities of real-life cities.

Notable exceptions are Genosha and Latveria, of course.

(where's my subscriber's edit?!!?)

Marvel Universe > DC Universe

Lets not even get into this argument.

It will be long, bitter and you will lose. :)
