Square Enix have revealed that the first scenario expansions for their MMO Final Fantasy XI will be playable come April. For those too eager to wait, however, you can gain some strange satisfaction by putting your money down in late March.

As reported back in November, Square Enix has three new scenario expansions on tap for Final Fantasy XI, all to be released this year. Today they announced players will be able to purchase the first expansion, A Crystalline Prophecy - Ode of Life Bestowing, on March 23... but they won't be able to play it until April.

The expansion will be available for $9.99 through Square Enix's PlayOnline Viewer. But as the press release explains, "After purchase, Final Fantasy XI players will have access to this new content after the release of the upcoming version update in early April 2009." Just think of it as a digital distribution version of a pre-order, we guess?

These expansions won't add any new territory, but rather, as Square Enix previously explained it, "deepen the storylines running through pre-existing areas." The story of this first expansion is described as follows: "One day, a giant crystal appeared in the skies above Jeuno, triggering a series of unexplained happenings across the land. Now, adventurers will set forth to unravel the mysteries of this primordial crystal that holds the secret of Vana'diel's past." A Crystalline Prophecy will also bring a new piece of armor called the Nuevo Coselete, which will allow players to customize it with two out of a possible twenty different enhancements.

I do love a Google Image search.

When an expansion is bought through the client software (not box, no media, etc), doesn't it almost feel like a payed-for content update?

Disclaimer: Used to play ffxi, used to love it. Not anymore.

lol

that guy on the right looks hilarious.

I guess the most bizarre part about Cosplay like this, I think, is that it looks like their wearing stuffed animal clothes. Like, it's not made with material like it would be if the FFO universe was REAL, it's made out of the stuff they make foam Number #1 fingers out of. They look completely unimpressive and incapable of fighting anything at all...

The guy on the right is the NOT creepy one. It's a decent costume of a black mage with an earth staff.

The scary guy is the one on the left. The guy is dressed as a mithra, of which the only playable sex is female. Hes Cos-playing a female (cross-playing?).
