Unreal Tournament 2007, developed by North Carolina-based Epic Games, is the return of the premier online first-person shooter franchise, with added features like persistent stats and matchmaking. The game promises to blow fans away with the gameplay, modifiability and visuals that Epic's Unreal Engine 3 technology will deliver.

Check these 4 new Unreal Tournament 2007 screens (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=30533) over at WorthPlaying.

Those are some very pretty screens. Somehow the thing that strikes me as evidence of their technology is the detail put into the wheels and undercarriage of the buggy. I mean if you have so many polygons to spare that your sticking them on the buttom of the car then we have come a long way!

In my mind Unreal Tournament has totally supplanted Quake as "the" online FPS experience.

Looks freakin awesome! This title will make me upgrade my PC. UT just gets me all giddy. w00t...

Why so dark? This is Unreal, not Doom 3.

Can you say... DirectX v10 title! Those look like v4 Shaders to me.

UT2k4 looks like Quake3. Only natural 2k7 would look like Doom ;).

Of course after looking at the shots it looks damn sweet, not dark.

If only it didn't play like UT, aka FPS Light.

Bring on the Xbox 360 version!

So wait, you're saying you would prefer FPS Dark? But you just said the shots didn't look dark but were nonetheless sweet looking!

Those look very nice. Is that traslucency I see being used on the skin? It seems like it doesn't look as plasticky and has a bit of depth. Can't wait to see it in motion.

Hehe, and you could tell how?

Yeah, I was just fooling around Taco, though I have always been wary of classifying what a genre, like FPS for instance, "should" or "shouldn't" be like. You might as well say that some movie is Drama-lite, which doesn't really make much sense since there's no one way for a drama to be.

I love unreal (and quake 3), but they lost me at the vehicle bs. I wanted an all out, no holds bar, fast pace slugfest. Now it is dodge the fucktard in the hovercraft and hope your teammates are not complete idiots. I fucking hate halo and how everyone adpated some part of it in the fps now. A simple straight forward blow the other guy away fps is best left alone.
Now you have to dongle 2 switches to open a dorr so you can a vehicle and jump out over a raven and parachut out into a 6th story window to get a decent gun to even attempt to play with.

That sounds slightly exagerrated.

But on a side note, has anyone noticed that Malcom isn't looking too healthy in that last shot?

From what I understand there will be both.

The blood effects in the third screenshot look a little primitive. I hope they'll bring back UT-style gore (bones, etc.) rather than UT2004's boring juicy strawberries. Other than that, this looks incredible... Malcolm looks as good as one of the characters from that Final Fantasy CG movie.

Also, North Carolina represent.

I expect that you are correct about that. The only way I could see this going to one console over another was if someones palm was greased fairly generously...

Maybe you shouldn't be playing onslaught then? Stick with deathmatch. Seems pretty obvious to me.. but I guess some people can't be helped.

Yes, on all two non-instagib deathmatch servers. Unreal Tournament is and always has been (at least since I started playing it) a spectacular game. Problem is, everyone thinks it's just a Quake ripoff, so compared to the Quake/Half-Life communities (more specifically, the Counter-Strike community) Unreal has practically no fanbase.

I really don't think that "everyone" thinks it's a Quake ripoff. I think older gamers might think that, but a younger generation who didn't at least get to experience Quake 3 might think differently.

Am I the only one who think that there's just way too much shit in these screenies? Perhaps it's meant as a tech demo, but I think that if I saw all of this in motion I would probably feel ill. It's impressive, but does that mean it's good?

Unrelated to the rant above: the first few shots look a lot like the movie Blade Runner to me.

It's impressive, but does that mean it's good? Most people actually think it's cool to have a realistic-looking world. Devastasted urban environments tend to have shit lying around everywhere.

If you've gotta have the clean (undetailed and boring) look, just turn all the settings down. Voila, every building in the game is now a green cube and every player a red sphere. So-called "pros" do this all the time.

Problem is, everyone thinks it's just a Quake ripoff, so compared to the Quake/Half-Life communities (more specifically, the Counter-Strike community) Unreal has practically no fanbase.Compared to Counter-strike, every other game in existence has practically no fanbase. However, Gamespy stats (http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/) say that UT2004 currently has over twice as many players as Quake 3 & 4 combined. Based on this, I seriously doubt that most people regard UT2004 as nothing more than a "Quake ripoff."

Just so ppl know the original UT was in development before Quake 3, but Quake 3 was released first, so I guess technically Quake 3 would be ripping UT. But both Epic and Id claim they were unaware of each others projects till they were both well underway.

Also I dont think most people think UT is a Quake ripoff. Quake is way oldschool Unreal is the future and I think people have realized that since 2k3.

Talanvor

Since I played the original UT I've been hooked to it. The Quake 3 was okay but I much preferred UT for sheer bloody fun.

And Onslaught is one of the most enjoyable game modes I've ever played for an FPS, I guess I wouldn't like it if I was bad at it too, oh well.

I still miss UT'99, that game had serious staying power. UT2k3 was a light snack, and UT2k4 was a great game, but neither could compare to UT'99. While I don't think anything will ever bring back those days, I can't wait to be playing this one. What really made 2k4 was the vehics, the redesigned oldschool maps, and etc. What really makes UT stand out over Quake are the weapons, levels, and the dodging commands.

How can a sequel rip off someone else's sequel???

OF COURSE Unreal is a ripoff of Quake concepts... Just like it's a ripoff of Doom\Wolfenstein concepts. This is not news, and noone cares.

Seriously. How is that WASD digital controls working for you? How about that force feedback feeling with an actual trigger to pull when firing instead of tapping a mouse? How about sitting on your couch?

No, it's not as acurate as a mouse, but it's far far far far more immersive and fun.

I'm starting to think this complaint is from people who can't seem to master FPS's in controllers.

There's nothing to 'master' when every single FPS on consoles comes with auto-aim enabled. Yes, even Halo.

I'm so fucking sick of the controller vs. keyboard/mouse debate. If you can't deal with a controller in an FPS, don't play games that use them. Find more creative ways to announce your ignorance than 'wah, console FPSes require no skill'. Fuckhead.

KarmaGhost

How 'bout we say this:

Whatever controller works for you best, then that's what you should play with. I used to play FPSers with only the arrow, ctrl, and alt buttons. Then Quake came around and I started to get owned way too much. By Quake 2, I finally had to give up and try the keyboard/mouse approach. By then, I had also declared that the N64's controller (boistered by Goldeneye: 007) the best way to play a FPS.

Now, I can't live without the keyboard/mouse. That wasn't always the case and I bet if people from both sides of the debate tried other options (for long enough to get used to them, mind you) they may/may not change their minds. I did with Halo and I eventually went back to the PC, but that doesn't mean that I've given up on console FPS games.

Also, you can't confuse the controller-type debate with a debate between consoles and the PC.

If it was a Quake rip off I'd actually be interested in playing it. I'll stick with QuakeIV.

I don't play with the vehicles (and I know to stick with the DM servers;)), so that cuts out a lot of what the game has. But UT in it's pure DM form is a fast paced DM game(in the vein of Quake) with really really shitty weapons designed to be simple to become adept at.

Darn you got me, I didnt know there was an option for deathmatch only    !11!1!!!!
Go back to unreal tourney and compare it to 2003 or 04. The maps are huge now, especially the outdoors ones, and sniper fests. It gets old sniping people after a while and since the action is not constrained to fast and tight maps people just run around for minutes without finding anyone to shoot. I am all for graphical updates, better items, and a better game, but a fucking huge ass map doesnt do anything but hinder gameplay. I still think quake 3 was the most balanced all out dm fps ever, and that is coming from an unreal fan boy. Oh well, I guess I cannot be helped, im th3 doom3d!11!!!

Wha?

So UT weapons are simple to become adept at compared to Quake, which has no alternate fires, larger levels, no double jumps, and no walljumps. So... not only is your range of firepower and variety of distance in combat increased, the mobility of your target is much greater.

Hell, the shock combo alone is harder to "become adept at" than the entire Quake arsenal.

Quake weapons are designed for one purpose, which is easily sorted out. Shotgun... point-blank, check. Railgun... long-range, check. Grenade launcher... damn near useless, but fun, check.

Taco
12-14-2005, 06:19 AM
Please, the shock combo is the only thing it has. Everything else is spray and pray with a rate of fire 5 times to fast(including the shock rifle) and many of the weapons being too similar. Alternate fire? Just because you can add an extra weapon does not mean you should. All they are is another bullet on the back of the game box.

Quake, easily sorted out, no doubt. Stengths and weaknesses are also emphasized much more and they are MUCH more balanced.

Same. Even though UT2004 is a quality product, I think I've played enough hours of UT to rival serious EQ and WoW addicts.

Bring on the PC version...I think we've already seen so far that the PC versions of this game are far superior than the console counterparts.

There is a generation that didn't experience Quake3? shit, I feel old. I am still playing it, CPM is a great mod.

Well they think they need that 400 fps.

The point is not getting higher FPS, it is to easily spot the enemy and concentrate on him without all the other distractions getting in the way.

i love ut2004, especially the new map packs (if any fricken server would host em).. the chinese temple dm map and the ctf map thats all green with the tubes are just awesome. Even the hillbilly DM map is great.

however, the fucking logic to nerf the shock rifle but make the flak whores the same/even worse just plain stumps me.

Trying to play a FPS with a controller after that just feels like crap.
