I highly recommend trying the demo if you havn't played Darwinia. Apart from anything else, it's a beautiful game, but in a different way to modern games.
It's simple, but addictive gameplay, and surprisingly, I found the storyline quite, well, emotional.

Well, for those of you without Steam, there has been a Darwinia demo available for months and months on various file sites...

I downloaded the demo for this a while back and loved it. Definitely going to pick it up sometime.
Now, I have a question about this Steam business - will I have to install Steam to play and update this game even if I don't buy it through Steam??
Damn, wanted to try this but my motherboard is toast at the moment.
Amazingly Gigabyte let me RMA it without any hassle. I'm generally fearful of dealing with the idiots that work at most motherboard manufacturers. MSI in particular can eat my colon.

As long as we're bragging about resolutions, I switched to 1680:1050 and things went great for me. This game looks nice and played well.... hmmm.....

You won't be playing it unless you buy it through Steam.
At all.
In fact, you can't purchase it anywhere else. You can only get it through Steam, now.

Heh, had to do a RMA with Gigabyte a few months ago. GA-8NXP stopped posting. They said it'd take about two weeks, but I waited a month before calling them up. The guy said that it had gone through final testing and would be shipped back to me in about a week...and the UPS guy handed me my motherboard later that day.
So expect the RMA to take about twice as long as they quote, and Gigabyte not to have a clue where your motherboard is at any given point in time.
When and where do they quote you a time? I was hoping they'd just send me another, like any other god damn company on the planet would.
Why do motherboard companies all suck?
By the way, I only went Giga-Byte because they were the only ones with a 939 board with RAID at the time. Even then I was uneasy.

i opened the preferences.txt file and edited the resolution directly. the demo started up in 1280x1024 and ran fine.

Since when? I still see it up on GoGamer. :p
If they pull it from all sources but Steam and make it require that software, then they will lose a sale from me.

i understand that many people have had problems with steam and do not like it, but i must say that i have never ever had a problem with it. i preloaded hl2 before its official release and the second that they activated it i was up and running without any problems. same for cs:s and dod:s.
