From the looks of this list of changes, (http://bf1942.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=10077) helicopters and to some extend jets will not be so overpowered anymore once the 1.2 patch is released. As you might notice there aren't any performance improvements on the list so far, though. However, EA stresses it's not a complete list of changes for Battlefield 2, just the first teaser.
Armando "Aj" Marini from the Battlefield Team has this to add: "We believe this update has some significant improvements that everyone will appreciate."

It's about frickin' time. I can understand jets being fairly powerful, but the helis are ridiculous. You should be able to down most of the choppers with enough machinegun fire, especially if you hit critical areas like the cockpit or fuel tanks.

DPVs and FAVs knock Heli's down like there's no tomorrow, the PKM should be similar.
What REALLY annoys me is that the BTR-90, lav 25, and the fucking ANTI AIRCRAFT VEHICLE GUNS do less damage than the jeep machine guns.
I can hit most vehicles at the edge of visible range with my AT missles, so reducing the TV missle on the choppers is a little silly. They should have left those alone.

No jumping and shooting?
I can tell you this, last time I had a fire fight in real life I wasn't sitting in a prone position five feet away from a rival Blood gang member as he pointed his AK at my face.
Luckily I had my carmello anthony sneaks on so I could boost over him with a flashkick and unleash a round at him. Later, in the Blood's online gang forum the victims friends were posting that it 'wasn't fair or realistic jumping and letting 9's fly'.
I later posted on their site using the unkown handle 'ReeferDeefer' that they sucked my ganja nuts. That caused a stir for about two posts until the thread was hijacked into a political debate about republican vs. democrat views.
LOL silly fucking gangsters.
In conclusion, I hate people.

Looks good. ARe the nade launchers going to be nerfed any? NOt that it bugs me, but I know others don't like the constant nade launching spam on some maps. I guess no shooting while jumping helps that out a bit.
Helis were never that powerful if you just get in a jeep and shoot at them. You already could bring them down quick.
Jets tho were untouchable unless you had an equal pilot on the other side.

Reloading does not happen while sprinting. I am continually annoyed that I can't reload my AT Launcher while I sprint for cover.
It will reload if you are walking without holding the sprint key down.

Jeep guns were fine against helis, AFV guns were not, nor were PKMs (I'm ok with a 5.56MM round being ineffective vs Helis). Also, Hitting an attack chopper with a MBT's main gun still required you to put more rounds in it to knock it down. If you hit a Helicopter with a round from an M1A2, that fucker should be going DOWN.

GOOD! Stupid bastard bunnyhoppers. I'd like to see you shoot an AK47 while jumping around like a TWAT!
-The Sa80 weapon has been improved

Yeah man, Yeah! I like battlefield 2 the most because it's a realistic portrayal of modern combat and I gotta have me some of that.
Just the other day my mom told me to get into our station wagon but I said I couldn't because realisticly the person in the second seat is always standing outside the sunroof with a rpg.
yeah man, yeah!

You reload while sprinting if you start the reloading process before you start sprinting.
I agree jeeps are fine against helis. PLenty of maps iwth jeeps on them. NOt much a need to nerf them down.
The problem is really the players. ON pubs they are just unaware so yes Helis become more powerful. But if you play with players who know what they are doing then helis will face alot of ground fire and will have a hard time.
The game really needs a couple of balance levels. Public balance and a hard-core or enthusiast balance.

to reload while sprinting,
hit the reload key, then while the reload animation is running u can sprint as much as u like.
its not canceled, its how i usually get to cover whilst getting another at missile in check.
the main reason why this doesnt work all the time, is because the sprint bar can deplete rather quickly.

Just where is the best site that actually has the weapon stats after a change?
And yeah nerf the planes! An A-10 may be built to go ground strafing but everything else is dog meat vs. quad 14.5mm cannons.
You should not lose a map just because all the pilots chose one side and that air spawn point is uncapturable.

That's a nice change list to see; I would have preferred it about 4 months ago, but obviously Electronic Arts' priorities lay elsewhere. Still no mention about fixing the elusive enemy IFF tag issue that still crops up every now and then which makes enemies appear as friendly and vice-versa...a problem that has been around since the game launched early this summer.
Encouraging, but having seen the "quality" of the patches which have come out so far, I wouldn't be surprised if the 1.2 patch ends up introducing about half as many bugs as it will supposedly fix.

BF2's all I have time to play online anymore.
I wouldn't mind if the helicopters stayed the same as long as the ground weapons did more damage. For the most part the in game AA sucks. I can have solid lock, no flares and the missles just shoot right by. The AA vehicles should do more damage both to the Heli's and planes and to ground vehicles. They have next to no armour so, giving them some firepower shouldn't be too much of an imbalance.
I agree with the tank hitting heli comment and the APC 20mm against heli. Both should do more damage than the 50 cal on the jeep. The APC and Tank both have limited upward shooting angles so, a decent heli-pilot can stay out of range. I think it would reduce heli-hover caps since they'll catch more ground fire.
Heli repair speed could be slower too.

...except for the fact that you shouldn't be hitting an attack chopper with an m1a2 round unless it is sitting on the pad.
All they'll do with this patch is make the helicopters not worth flying, and not worth the learning curve. I guess they'll have to fix vehicles next, we gotta fix everything non-infantry, reducing all of the complexity in the game to nil. The variety, and utility of the vehicles are the only thing that puts BF2 over any other shooter, imho, shame to see them cut off their nose to spite their face.
They 'fixed' the jets by releasing an expansion with no jet maps.
Now when they say 7 missiles instead of 14, I hope they really are talking MISSILES. 7 TV missiles is fine as it is now, if you actually get to use 14 missiles before going back to the pad to repair, you're playing vs. idiots.
I'm afraid that they're really talking rockets/stick. A 7 rocket stick is worthless vs. anything besides lightly armored vehicles or infantry---and only good vs. infantry with the hind or longbow.

If they really wanted to patch the game, they'd fix the damned ingame server browser.
A. If you select more than 6 filter options, it breaks(no servers at all)
B. Some filters don't do what they should do, or do nothing at all.
C. Ping times are inaccurate, due to the multi-server polling code. They'll always end up much higher than reality if it happens to be polling multiple servers.
Just the other day, I somehow ended up with more servers in my favorites tab, than in the entire server tab. still haven't figured out how they could break something that bad. It wasn't the 6 filter/0 server bug, either, there were some servers in the main tab, just not near as many as in my favorites tab, where I've only placed two servers manually.

Quoted for extreme fucking truth.
I have some minor gripes with the game, but they can mostly be shrugged off.
However, the server browser doesn't fucking work - and I have never seen it work properly on any computer.

Random:
BF2 is structured so you can hit Choppers with the main gun (the whole choppers fly low enough, and the tanks main gun tracks fast enough thing), as such, the MBT's main gun should be able to completely decimate a helicopter in this game. I've had the extreme pleasure of knocking 5+ choppers with various tank's main gun (usually combined with alt+fire from the co-ax) and assisting in bringing down choppers with the main gun on several other occasions. Hits vs choppers via MBT usually occur when the tank is in a position to fire down on a chopper (a hilltop point overlooking a flag), the chopper is taking the flag (either up close or a fair distance away), or the chopper is flying low towards or away from the tank about to do the killing (after strafing with FFAR and missing, or just happening by).
As an aside, I've also had the extreme pleasure of killing the pilot in at least 3 cobras with my Eryx, at least twice while the pilot was hovering low over the flag, dropping the chopper to the ground, rotors stopping, while the soon to be killed gunner sat there like an idiot. A good couple of kills firing Eryx's into the passenger compartments on blackhawks for kills as well. I also have a couple of HJ8 kills vs Cobras and at least one HJ8 "kill" of a *just* vacated blackhawk on a distant hill (I can still see that one in my minds eye, was spectacular).
I would be perfectly happy if they upped the AAA vehicle, and AFV Cannon damage to air vehicles, while leaving the health of the chopper alone. I'd especially like to see more penetration of AAA vehicle guns vs the passengers of transport choppers.
I'd also like to see the effectiveness of the TV guided missles on choppers left the same. The effectiveness of the 2.75" FFAR pods should be more effective vs infantry and light vehicles and less effective vs AFVs.
As for the server browser, I couldn't agree more. Luckily, most of the guys I play with will find one server and then just use Teamspeak to get the IP out to the rest of the gang.
feeble:
I'm not going to say that 100% either of us is right about the AT Launcher, but as someone who's got 1200+ "kills" with the AT Launcher (http://bf2s.com/player/45077779/) after looking down it's sights for over 36+ hours on that weapon alone, while being killed over 1400 times while holding the weapon, I'm pretty sure that I've been frustrated by the stupid reload functionality while trying to get my next round into a smoking AFV more than once.
