I wish they would finally get a clue and just stay closer to the UFO concept. The whole "conquer territories" idea gets soo tedious in Aftershock. I must more prefer the "Go after the UFOs" thing....

So whats the deal with the last UFO game, Aftershock was it? Has anyone tried it, is it worth picking up? Maybe wait for a discount bin?

Tell us.

Shame they don't seem to have a clue how to design games.

They're no Julian Gollops.

UFO: Aftershock is a much better game than UFO: Aftermath. With base building, diplomacy (if somewhat limited), resource management, stronger RPG elements, modable weapons, entering buildings and so on, it's quite good. Still not a perfect game, but getting there with Afterlight hopefully. If you're the sort of player that can't stand real-time with pause, you'll not enjoy the S.A.S. system in these games, but even though I prefer turn-based I enjoy UFO: Aftershock quite a bit. Try the demo and see what you think.

Maybe I'm getting old, but sometimes I wish people would just take old games and update their graphics, performance and content. I would gladly pay for new X-Com or Dark Reign. Can you imagine how cool a new X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter would be? I mean sure, there are more efficient ways to build a bridge, but nothing matches the classic style and beauty of a suspension bridge. So use some new alloys and better paint but give us the classics renewed. Can you imagine how cool that would be?

Man, i must be getting old.

Thanks Slaughter for the info, I bought the first game and played for maybe an hour or two: my brother played more but eventually stopped. Get the second or wait for third I wonder? Definitely try the demo.

T-Dub I took enjoyed those old games, but, I believe they are best left in the past. Imagine what would happen if they redid Tie-Fighter or X-Wing WRONG. Ugh.

A couple more interations and these guys might just stumble onto something classic.

Aftermath was worth the $20 I spent on it, and I'd imagine when I get around to Aftershock it'll be worth it too. Good enough but maybe just because the competition is so thin?

In the meantime I've still got UFO Defense.

I feel the same way. Back in the day of no 3D cards and rare sound cards, the game ideas were still new and we didn't have endless FPS clones of WWII themed titles. Those same games are still fun to play, they just look totally out of date.

I loaded up Master of Magic the other day in a DOS emulator full screen on my 20" LCD.... This was a sad sight, but once I went back to a 320x240 window, it started to look alright. Next thing I know 5 hours later I'm still playing it. They dont even need to rewrite the game engine, slap some new graphics, sound and music on the same game, make it run under DirectX and I'll give em $50 in a heart beat. This applies to

Dune 2
StarControl 2 (I know about the UrQuan release, but I still want new graphics with the same play)
Master of Orion
Command & Conquer (orginal or Gold)
Red Alert
X-Com
Jagged Alliance
Tie Fighter

The list goes on and on...

I'm playing Baldur's Gate, again. Along the lines of the graphics update, some kindly modders have transferred the resources of the original into the BG2 engine. Quite gorgious, I highly recommend it if you have both 1 and 2 (yes, you need both.) Google "baldur's gate tutu."

I would love a graphical update of X-Wing, X-Com, System Shock 2 and the first Deus Ex. I have dropped entirely too many hours of my life into each of those games and with a graphical update my free time would go from zero to none.

On subject, I played Aftershock and thought it was a fine game. Not my favorite ever but I enjoyed my time with it.

If you liked X-Com and the UFO games then Rebelstar wasn't a bad game if you have a GBA or DS. It isn't nearly as good or deep as X-Com but it stand on its own as a pretty entertaining turn-based combat game.

If only they didn't use Starforce, I'd be there in a flash.

Well this shouldn't be a shock since they said sometime around Aftershock's announcement there were going to be three games. Of course I'm probably the only one who caught it since I seemed to be the only one who enjoyed Aftermath.

I agree with the other old guy. DON'T "ADD" anything to the gameplay, just make prettier graphics. Hell, I wish someone made a TC of System shock 1 and two using the doom 3 engine.

Same thing with all those great space sims of yore. And someone should remake the whole Mechwarrior 2 saga in 4's engine. or even the quake 4 engine.

The second one was just a graphical update of the first... :p

Those are filthy, hateful lies. The first Deus Ex was a masterpiece, the second was a travesty.

I actually don't think the second was as bad as most people. I just think as a sequel to the first it was a complete and total dissapointment.
