Zombie Studios (http://www.zombie.com/) and Radical Publishing send along word that they have launched their first Sci Fi comic book, Shrapnel.

Released in early January, Zombie Studios’ first comic series, SHRAPNEL: ARISTEIA RISING, has quickly garnered rave reviews.

Produced by Zombie Studios and published by Radical Publishing, the epic solar war trilogy co-created by Mark Long and Nick Sagan, represents Zombie’s initial foray into comics, with the first of three miniseries, ARISTEIA RISING, written by M. Zachary Sherman and painted by Bagus Hutomo. The Philadelphia Daily News concludes: “If you want a book that's different, with a heroine to root for, that reads and looks like a film and that packs a whopping 48 pages in between its covers for only $1.99, SHRAPNEL: ARISTEIA RISING No. 1 is for you."

“We made our biggest commitment to release SHRAPNEL, and I’m just as excited about the series now as when Mark first showed it to me,” says Radical Publishing’s President and Publisher Barry Levine. “The overwhelming response from just the first issue is amazing. And from having read the story, I know that readers are going to want to stay with this for the long haul.”

“The reaction to the book, for me at least, was completely unexpected,” Sherman adds. “I'm very excited to see the response that it’s getting. Mark and Nick's vision of a dystopian future with a universe at war was one I saw in my head immediately, and it’s been a pleasure to contribute to that.”

Is that handdrawn or drawn over CG shots? Wow looks good.

How the heck do you make enough money off of 5 comics with an average price of $2.75 to cover the expenses of making this amount of art to do the job?

I smell a collector item!

Going to go check my store today for it. Didn't see it yesterday, but wasn't looking either.

The first issue is $1.99 and the other issues are $2.99. That is still a really good price for a 48 page comic. I guess if we all go out and buy it, they will make enough money to cover expenses.

As they say in Starship Troopers, "I'm doing my part!"

GD that is beautiful. I'm not really into comics, but this would make a believer out of me. Where's the game and the bluray? :)

seems like amazon lists a hardcover edition (i'm assuming all 5 comics in one) for september 09... i'd prefer that over the soft comics.

It's been a long time since I enjoyed a good comic book. What's up with the .99 cent thing? How long have comics been doing that?

I've had a chance to read this and review it for Comics Bulletin.

You can find the review for Shrapnel #3 here (http://www.comicsbulletin.com/reviews/123605771369298.htm).

Overall, I thought it was okay, if a little dry and filled with military jargon. It'll be interesting to see where the creators go in later issues.

Bought this series (first series of Shrapnel) - purely because an old friend of mine did the art for the variant covers. I missed out on #3 (because he didn't do a cover for that one - and I was ordering #3 before I'd even held my copy of #1 - as is the the way things work in the direct sales comic market - but I did buy #4) - and have now read the first 2 and want more - and Diamond are out of stock of #3!

Good to see it getting some coverage. Y'all go buy it now!
