Looks like the Big Sister rumor (http://evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79311) is straight up. Game Informer (http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200903/N09.0310.1603.49470.htm) released the cover shot of their next article with a pretty strange looking character. A sleeker armoured beast with a little sister on its back. It may not be female, and it may not look as cool as the Big Daddy models, but its something new with the game.

Shouldn't they be called Big Mommies?

Well the big daddies were a father figure to the little sisters so I guess it's not completely illogical to see the now fully grown up girls follow in their footsteps.

Big Daddy, would you kindly slim up for the sequel? We need the extra pixels for a new character called Replayability.

I don't know. I like it. Sure it may come off as a bit gimmicky, but it does add some neat possibilities from a storyline perspective, as well as providing a different kind of threat to the player than the usual Big Daddies.
If bioshock needed anything, it was more enemy variety.
I hope this isn't the *only* new enemy.

Looks kinda stupid. I'm more concerned than ever that, without Ken Levine's direction, this game is going to be trash.

I'm not sure if it looks stupid so much as it just looks conventional.
That looks like any bad guy in any videogame ever.
In fact, it looks like it might as well be GlaDOS.
The original Bioshock was basically built around the Big Daddies. I don't think they're necessary, but I think whatever the design for the new staple enemy is... the whole game needed to be built around that design.

More intersting in this announcement, I think, is the fact that you're going back to Rapture.
I don't know wheter that's a good thing or a bad thing.
I mean, if you could freely explore Rapture like I thought you could in the first game, that would be epic. But otherwise... aren't we kind of done with that? Didn't we see most of what there was to see?

Yeah it is, it even says "Big Sister" on the cover...
As I said in the other thread but with less effort, screw Bioshock 2. This is one the least innovative things they could have done.

Its gotta be some random crap involving Dr. Tenenbaum, from what I can remember she either disappeared or stayed inside Rapture.

and so, bioshock is officially an alleged 'art' game that is now an exploited and whored out property.

If this is a sequel meaning its after the last Bioshshock, upon a return to Rapture, its natural to think that the lil siters would grow up (since they were the best suited to survive) and be more their Big Daddy protectors. I think its an interesting synergy and I would imagine it (the franchise) will be handled with care.

I don't like it.
The whole idea of Big Daddies were that they were walking Tanks, capable of effectively guarding the little sisters. This seems like it has come purely from an aesthetic point of view, which I don't like. Like the design came first, then they just had to figure out a way to make it work within the game.
I'm starting to worry that Bioshock might become like the Matrix. First one is excellent, but in the end the whole IP is brought down by sequels that just couldn't do the original justice.

This could make sense under the auspices of what happens to the little sisters when they grow up? Maybe their suit 'em up as 'Big Sisters'?
To me, this just screams, "WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY MORE IDEAS FOR THE SEQUEL." Big Sisters? Really? Really?

It cannot be grown up Little sisters. If you played through the first one (spoiler alert) you would know that if you took the "good" path you rescued the little sisters and raised them to be fine upstanding citizens. If you took the "bad" path you killed them all.
So in the case that they are little sisters grown up, I think they broke continuity and lost my interest.
I really hope they don't ruin this title by ignoring what happened in the first

Well, this is a problem in general with sequels and cannon... particularly when there are multiple endings. If it is a true sequel as in, the game takes place AFTER the events of the first, then they're probably going to have to pick one ending and call that the "real" ending... which defeats the whole morality aspect of the first game... kicking one side in the balls.
Of course, they could play off of the events of the first, in case you've got a saved game that shows you completed it in a certain way... but I'm sure that's too much work... and you've also got people that beat it both ways.

i think they said this is a prequel isn't it? which would make these hot chicks fit in fine. perhaps that model got scrapped in favor of the big daddy model, or perhaps you eliminate the big sisters in this prequel, and the evilness comes up with the new and improved big daddy line.
either way, as long as they're not big hamsters i'm ok.

There's conflicting reports about the actual timing of the game... the most recent seems to indicate that this will take place 7 years after the original.

ah ok, then in that case, the sisters can be the new and improved line, sleeker, faster, and obviously more intelligent (being women and all, going for the brownie points). qualities that would make them better at coming to the rescue of the little brats.

How so? Bioshock takes place in 1960, the teaser site shows the date as 1967.
OK so those dates dont have to mean gameplay time yet were lead to believe so.
Now some crap from Wiki...
On March 11, 2008, Take Two Interactive officially announced that Bioshock 2 is being developed by 2K Marin, and is expected to be released before the 2009 Christmas holiday season.[73] In an August 2008 interview, Ken Levine mentioned that 2K Boston was not involved in the game's sequel because they wanted to "swing for the fences" and try to come up with something "very, very different."[74] BioShock 3 has also been announced, with its release likely to coincide with the Bioshock film.
Different devs and its being whored out for 2 and later 3 and a movie... All of which I forgot. I hope the reason that 2K Boston didnt take charge is that they are working on System Shock...
A 2K developer stated that the game "is part of a prequel and at the same time is a sequel."
Further proof of the milking... Sequel and prequel... EXTREME!!!!! Or just stupid.

Well you're right that the big daddies are tanks to protect the little sisters, but the point of these "big sisters" is that they are for kidnapping, apparently, and built to be light and fast. Possibly even to swim.
So there still might be Big Daddies. Just for a different, original, purpose.
As for the little sisters growing up into big sisters, I don't think that is to be implied. The Big Daddies went through a massive physical and biological change to become the monsters that they were. I don't think its just a matter of a little sister putting on a suit and becoming a big sister.

I'm willing to bet that it will still be a good game. People love to bitch and moan. If it's not as original as the original game, so what? If you don't feel like they should have made a sequel, don't play it and pretend that the series ended with the first one (That's the stance I've taken on the Matrix movies). Personally, I'm looking forward to it.

One of the biggest issues here is that the design dosen't make sense in the game world.
The Big Daddies were designed based on the diving suits that existed. They were grounded in some reality that made the concept extra eerie.
These look like the more "hot topic" versions. All those belt buckles and the custom metal work on the helms. It doesn't fit the world.
I'm making the assumption that you will play a parent investigating the disappearance of his daughter. So that should be ok story wise. How that brings you back to Rapture and why this is going on is what has me confused.
You figure there could have been 3 survivors from the 1st game.
Ryan - Motivation? Possibly trying to rebuild Rapture? DeMotivation He was cost conscious on the original BD's and he had a staff to create them. How could he do it alone?
Fontaine - Motivation? Power and rebuild Rapture? Demotivation - Why? Once again, the staff issue comes up. He was a schemer. Could this have been a failsafe?
Tennenbaum - Motivation? Crazy? Mother instinct? Demotivation - Mother instinct. Was actually concerned for the kids. No real gain to rebuild Rapture.

I've been looking at the high res version of the cover, it looks like a little sister is in a small ball cage on top of the big sister. Seems like it could be an evolution of the Big Daddy to start transporting the little sisters and to become more agile to fend off attackers. It really wouldn't be too difficult to explain that sort of evolution.
Plus they don't really say if Big Sister refers to the "older little sister" or the Big Daddy look a like. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I'd rather just get creeped out by Shodan again.
Bioshock was ok by itself... but really... wouldn't we all rather play another System Shock?
