View Full Version : Xbox vs. Xbox 360: Video Capture of Kong Side-by-Side

GamesFirst.com (http://www.gamesfirst.com/) has posted an article comparing (http://www.gamesfirst.com/?id=1065) identical video captures from the Xbox 360 version of King Kong and the Xbox version. This is a follow-up to an article they published last week, but this time they use videos side-by-side in a flash file instead of static images. It's pretty interesting. The fire and shadows look really good on the Xbox 360, but quite frankly some other scenes are hard to tell the difference between the two. Check it out.

Also, at the bottom of the article is a brief discussion of 1st and 2nd generation Xbox games, and how much the 360 titles will improve over time. They've got some side-by-side static screens of 1st generation Xbox launch titles and late generation Xbox titles for comparison. It's interesting to see how games on the system have improved from Max Payne to Doom 3.

I just want to know if anyone would be impressed if we put "since 1998" at the top of EvilAvatar.com. Heh.

Word like those old British shops, "est. 1998". That'd be cool.

How about "Since the dawn of the millenia"?

Tag "in pure evil" at the end of that suggest and it sounds like a winner to me.

Nope. You're thinking of this one here (http://www.gamesfirst.com/?id=1049), which did the same thing but with still images. This one uses video, which shows off the dynamic lighting.

If you have to show me a video to prove that the graphics are better, then you've already lost my attention.

Holy! Azurik makes a reappearance on the front page.

Obsidian! If you have to show me a video to prove that the graphics are better, then you've already lost my attention.Should they try to do it with words? Screenshots don't show that the detail and lighting isn't just painted on as it has been in the past, you pretty much need video.

‘If you have to show me the game running before I can see the difference you’ve already lost my attention.’

Um these comparisons are stupid... and Halo does not look nearly that bad, unless its the PC version with the graphics turned all the way down with imported textures made in MS Paint... And normal mapping = amazing?? uh no...

I actually learned a lot from watching that, so I appreciated the comparisons. I understand that King Kong is a first-gen title for the 360...but that's all we can purchase right now. So I want to see how it compares.

What a bunch of asses.

The differences between the xbox and 360 version of KK are incredible. Screenshots alone almost can't justify that.

Hence VIDEOS.

Umm... Comparing Azurik to Far Cry and Halo to Doom 3 screenshots? Sure the graphics look good on the 360 screenshots, but why compare different titles?

Let me compare Master of Magic to Warcraft III, DirectX 7 sure made it look good ;)

You misunderstand the final comparisons. They are not comparing 360 games to Xbox games. They are comparing early Xbox games to more recent Xbox games. Those comparisons prove the point that the first games to come out for a console are far surpassed visually by games that come out three years later. Azurik was one of the better looking XBOX games when it came out in 2001 and Far Cry Instincts is one of the best looking XBOX games today. The differences are incredible, and they go to show just how much better the games on the 360 could look a few years from now when compared to the launch titles.

Well, are we ignoring Halo as an outlier?

Okay, we get it already. The 360 visuals aren't necessarily a huge improvement in all games. Who cares? I mean, it was interesting three weeks ago but enough already. If you don't like it and you don't think it's an improvement, don't buy one. I think that the 360 just for Live alone represents enough of an improvement to warrant having one.

I see, thanks for pointing that out. I suppose 360 games will greatly improve over time as well. The devs will learn their tricks and we'll start seeing what the system can really do. I'm happy to wait till next year to buy mine.

A lot of it does look better tho..

Actually the article makes a good argument for Nintendo's stand on Non-HD graphics. With only 10% market saturation now, to maybe 30% in a couple of years and only 50% by the end of these consoles lives. It also shows you how good that lighting effects and physics can improve the look, not only a jump in resolution.

You might as well compare the PC version of Kong set to 640x480 then sampled down to 320x240. If you don't have an HD TV and care little about the new features of Live then wait. I have a HD TV and I was thinking of buying or building a new PC but the mad note graphics card would be about $300 to start with and I am only interest in Fear (which I hope will come out for the 360). I played Kong on my Xbox (great time) then when I got a 360, I rented it, the ape looks more like an ape the plants look more like plants the crabs taste like crabs and it all looks great. I upgraded my Xbox for the price of buying a new graphics card.

Also with Live letting you download demo, I don't have to steal the CDs out of the Xbox Mag. It's made me a better man.

Why can't people grasp the meaning of 'side by side' anymore? The example pics are completely different shots. It happens every time, though. How hard is it to run to the same point in a game twice?

AaronGF

Aren't they the exact same scenes? I mean, a few seconds off from each other, but other than that they're the same. Or are you talking about the Xbox 1st and 2nd generation comparisons? Because those are from different games all together...

The PS2 side by side comparison would be better. Some early PS2 games look worse than late PS1 games.

I find this a pointless comparison that does not really prove anything, good or bad, about the machine. The 360 version looks better, I agree. It does not look "Next gen better," I agree. Still, I want to point out that mutliplatform games rarely ever deviate that much from machine to machine. If anything, just try and be impressed a movie-based title isn't total ass.

For the record, I do not own a XBox 360, nor will I for some time. If asked, I believe that it will be the dominant system in this nation for the coming war, mostly because I do not see the public embracing the Revolution as a primary gaming device. The PS3 would have been my choice, and will be should it rectify the pricing issues we have heard of.
