Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com) has word that Capcom has announced a new X-box 360 game, Lost Planet (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6141080.html) . The game has veterans from both the Resident Evil and Onimusha series at work on it.

In Lost Planet, mankind survives on a frozen world with the help of protective Vital Suits, but they live in fear of the native monsters in the planet, the vaguely insectoid Eigrids. The player takes the role of a mysterious man named Wayne, who was discovered frozen in a Vital Suit. Wayne suffers from amnesia, and the only things he remembers are the death of his father, and the Eigrid that killed him.

According to Capcom, Lost Planet will play as a first-person shooter with action elements, although the trailer and screenshots released show gameplay from a primarily third-person view.
I've enjoyed both of those series, so I see this as a game to keep an eye on.

A) This was covered just the other day.

B) The trailer and 720p shots are awesome regardless of the fucking plot it looks like it could be a fun game from what has been shown. I think I got the link for trailer from bluesnews and the shots from Xboxyde that was the link in the news post here when it was first posted on EvAv.

The trailer reminded me a bit of GunValkyrie, with the insects and the suit ... could be a good omen! Man, I loved that game :D

Has anyone ever figured out what's up with the obsession video game stories have with amnesia plots? Especially when it comes to FPS?

Actually, yes.

Amnesia exists in all forms of entertainment FAR too often because it is a cheap story-telling device that allows writers to begin a story where the action starts instead of building up to it. Also, it allows the writer to be mysterious and have other characters say stuff that doesn't immediately make sense, but will all "snap together" once the exposition catches up with the action.

Also, it is frequently used to explain away characters making completely new choices. So let's say you want to do a story where the bad guy suddenly decides to become a good guy. How do you explain this transition with limited story-telling tools? Cheap answer: amnesia.

A lot of stories and story elements have been done over and over, and there really isn't any problem using story devices that have worked before. There is a saying among writers that "Shakespeare did it ALL already." This isn't completely true, but the sentiment is. If you have read a lot, you will find that even the most "original" stories contain a large amount of plot elements that can be seen in other works. Human nature is finite. However, some devices are so ineloquent that they expose their repetition even more than others. Amnesia is so improbable and so repeated that it is has become one of these.
