Resident Evil 5 sales 4:1 PS3 to 360 in Japan

N4G (http://www.n4g.com/) is reporting that PS3 copies of Resident Evil 5 have outsold the 360 version 4:1 (http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/NewsCom-289930.aspx) on release day (March 5). It's also beating RE 4's sales numbers for Day One.

According to Ameblo.jp Resident Evil 5 sold 278,000 on its first day in Japan.

What's more incredible is that Resident Evil 5 has beaten launch day sales of Resident Evil 4. The game sold 117,000 copies on the Gamecube in January 2005 and 145,000 copies on the PlayStation 2 in December 2005. Very nice to see the game is doing well. The numbers aren't surprising though . . . how many people own a PS3 over 360 in Japan?

Friend of mine is visiting there for vacation... she brought her alienware laptop along with some other things such as her phone, etc.

She says the people there are AMAZED by her electronics. What she brought with her on a PLANE is more technology than there is in the entire house she's staying in. Her aunt thought her phone was a portable dictionary because it has a full keyboard. None of her relatives have or even know anyone with a PS3, or anything like that.

What is the state of affairs in Japan? The image I always get from the media is that it's ridiculously technologically advanced.....

Yea until you try getting money out of a machine with your non-Japanese Visa card or try making an international phone call from a phone boot. Japan is just obsessed with gadgets and phones, on everything else they are behind.

Just in case you're not kidding, I thought I'd point out that your math is slightly off. If we take your PS3:X360 ratio of 3:1 to be correct and assume the stated sales ratio of 4:1 for PS3:X360 is also correct, then the PS3 is selling 33% better on a per-console basis.

Put in another way, imagine that there are a total of 3 PS3s in Japan and only 1 Xbox (again, 3:1). If 4 copies of RE5 were sold to the PS3 owners and 1 copy was sold to the Xbox owner (ratio of 4:1) then each PS3 owner bought 1.33 copies while the Xbox owner bought 1 copy.

I was at Bic Camera on launch day in Japan. The PS3 version was flying out. They knew the 360 version would need a boost, so had street teams out to push the 360 version.

Gonna be interesting to see the numbers here on Canadian (and American) soil. Often the 360 version does better here, but there seems to be a lot of PS3 Resident Evil supporters this time around.

I'm personally getting the 360 version, but that's also my only option.

I've been to Japan, study Japanese language and culture, etc.

Japan is almost a third-world country in every respect except the places where it's a 1st world country, if that makes sense. A lot of nations are like this, industrialized in a few central cities, and the rest of the country largely carrying on with traditional ways. Even America has regions like this, so we can't say it's not a widespread phenomena, just exists to a greater degree in 1st world versus 3rd world countries.

So, to give you an idea, there are still regions of Japan where villages have never seen a white man (or any other kind for that matter).

Because of this, there is a massive emphasis on city life, and they don't have much of a suburban lifestyle, like we have in the US. Everyone lives in the city, and the city is gigantic. I was shocked by the size of Tokyo. There are districts with just 20 story buildings for miles in every direction, seemingly.

So, if your cousin hailed from one of the poorer and more remote areas, I'm not surprised about your story. One of the problems that rural Japanese villages have is that all of their young women wisely flee to the city and try to meet 'salarymen', they don't want to carry on the traditional life and marry farmers. I don't blame them, farming is tough.

It will be interesting since Resident Evil 5 is the first RE for the Xbox and Resident Evil hasn't been a PSX franchise in years. Last gen the RE shifted hardcore to the GameCube and there is no Wii version. It will be interesting to see the numbers none the less.
