Valkyrie Profile is something of a cult classic on the PSOne, and Square Enix plans to let those who have not gotten their hands on the original yet give it a go as a port to the PSP, but more importantly to fans of the series, Gamespot reports (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6141048.html) that a sequel is being developed for the PS2 and will be released in 2006.
Square Enix is also developing a new Valkyrie Profile for release on the PlayStation 2 in 2006, titled Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria. While information on the title is currently scarce, the latest issue of Shonen Jump reveals first details. The game will take place in the same world as the original Valkyrie Profile, albeit several hundred years earlier. The city of Dipan, which was a ruined realm in the original Valkyrie Profile, will be appearing as a prosperous kingdom. The magazine hints that Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria may reveal what led to the Dipan's downfall.
Given Square Enix's current inability to meet projected release dates, I wonder if this game will be released quickly enough that they will feel it is worth the expense to translate it for the U.S. Odin, let it be so!
Here's to hoping it's translated!

What has me a little worried is that they don't mention the gameplay much. There are a few things that make Valkyrie Profile a standout title and I hope they are still in the sequel.
1. Your party is "dead" for all intents and purposes. Such an awesome mechanic to meet new party members when they die in their "normal" life. This could have been done even better than it was done in the original IMO. They kind of fudged this later in the game and the story became less strong because of it.
2. The whole thing where you train up your party to make them soldiers for Ragnarok was an amazing concept. I really enjoyed reading the reports on how the party members I sent to fight the war against the frost giants were doing. Maybe the duality of the character will allow us to play in both worlds and actually join in the battles against the Frost Giants?
I really hope they don't lose the things that gave this title it's charm. The setting was pretty "meh" really. It was the cool twists on RPG gameplay mechanics that made this game so interesting.

The original game is one that I need to go back and play again as I never did finish it. It was such an awesome game. If Square can get one of their non-Final Fantasy teams working on it (like, oh, Level 5?) then there is a chance we'd see this before the PS2 life-cycle winds down.

Hmm, a quick rundown.
You're a valkyrie sent down to earth by the gods to collect and train worthy souls to aid in the war against the giants. The gameplay is kinda unique. You've got an overworld map you fly around in, with points of interest (cities, dungeons, etc.). Stopping at a point takes a turn or two. The game is broken up into "chapters" and you have so many turns per chapter. Every chapter, you're given a goal to send some people up to valhalla with certain skills. So your job is to find those people, train them up (by gaining xp) and send them up.
Overall, it's a pretty awesome game, and I'm probably not giving it enough justice in my description. I also haven't played it in a while so my memory is a little fuzzy.

hooray. seriously.
Wow only 7 replies, pretty weak. Just to add my two cents, VP was a pretty solid RPG.
I'm pretty worried about it's English fate, though. Many Japanese games fall through the cracks because they are released during generational transitions, so companies don't bother taking the time to translate games if they might be released after the new generation is out. Since PS3 is launching in a "few months" (HA!) we probably won't see VP2. I was suprised that Dragon Quest 8 was released this late in the PS2's life in the US.
Edit: PS, in case it wasn't clear, if you like RPGs and have a PS2, you should get DQ8. Best PS2 game of the year in my opinion, but since I'm a DQ fan I may be a bit biased. Oh yeah, also get VP2 in 2007 if/when they actually translate it.

Considering I only played the first one at a friends house, I'm psyched about it going to PSP. Once I beat it, I'll definatly pick up the second.

It's only 7 replies because the game isn't for Xbox or the 360. This is a Microsoftian website, remember.
You know, I started growing bored with DQ8 shortly after getting the ship. I was bored with chasing Dhoulmagus around. I was in Argonia and was thinking "Goddamn, am I getting tired of this and the random battles already?" But after the Dark Ruins...BANG! I'm back into it. The story takes off a bit more, things pick up speed, and suddenly I'm loving every minute of it. There was that short lull where I grew bored for some reason, but now I'm hooked even more than I initially was. I don't know of many other RPGs that deserve RPG GOTY billing this year, but this one surely deserves a chance for that honor.
And I am one of those guys that never played Valkyrie Profile...there are actually a few RPGs for PS1 I overlooked when I was shipped off to college (or even high school...I had a full-time girlfriend and sports to tend to so I missed a bunch towards the end of my HS years), but I do own it. I also need to play Dragon Warrior 7, Thousand Arms, and the Lunar remakes, along with a couple others. Thankfully I can still play those on my PS2.

Oh come off it Kel!
You know that most of us gush over what ever is in front of us, and the problem is that Sony and Nintendo aren't talking games right now. I know I wet myself quite a bit over the MGS video, but you have to admit that Microsoft's competitors are super hush-hush right now.
Also, I think the majority of Ev Av posters have pretty much taken a big old crap on Microsoft based on their shortages.
Btw, put Valkyrie Profile on the top of your list. Incredibly innovative RPG. Play an hour of it RIGHT NOW. Unless, of course, you are trying to finish DQ 8. . . in which case, you know. . . good for you.
I stopped playing it when I got me 360 (before it blew up) and now I have sort of a grudge. . . I want to play it, but it feels like capitulating to my bad luck. I'm so screwed up.

Wait, so you're not playing DQ8 because... your PS2 blew up?... or your 360 blew up? Cause, ya know, DQ8 isn't a 360 game. ;)
As to getting bored with DQ8, I'd been waiting for it so long that I totaled the game. I have about 100 hours on my save file and I'm pretty close to completing both the defeated monsters list AND the collected items list. 103 mini medals I think I'm up to.
As a further DQ8 commentary, I'm still a little miffed about the changes to the North American version. The changes are nice until you play the Japanese version and realize that load times are almost nonexistant compared to the US version. Yeah, the US version isn't bad compared to some other PS2 games, but the JP version loads almost as fast as a SNES game. I would have preferred that instead of the new menu system and "improved" soundtrack.
Unfortunately I can't read Japanese, so I'll be happy with what I've got.

No. . . my X360 blew up. For whatever reason, I've got it in my head that going back and playing DQ8 BEFORE I get an X360 would be "giving in". I know that this is screwed up and illogical. . . but there it is.
