The GamerGirl team over at Gamergod (http://www.gamergod.com/) has an interesting article delving into a male driven industry (http://www.gamergod.com/article.php?article_id=3047). This time the subject of discussion is the sometimes overzealous portrayal of women in games. A well-considered piece, with thoughtful references to the works of Camille Paglia and Naomi Wolf. From the article:

"He also highlights several games that, instead of focusing on the female form in its big-breasted glory, showcase women who are intelligent, strong, and powerful. He insists, 'The protagonists highlighted above illustrate that plenty of excitement can be provided by female leads who will, in turn, bring in female gamers - not to speak of richer gameplay options. Additionally, as McIntosh says, most women gamers are "confident enough not to feel threatened" by sexist imagery, merely finding it annoying and disappointing.'

Interestingly enough, that's pretty much how I feel about these articles.

I'd like to the be the first to post in this thread that I enjoy large breasts and ankles.

Edit: My initial comment was prior to reading the article. I'd like to say that after reading the article I feel the sameway and enjoy large breasts and ankles.

“It was impossible to take the game seriously; the woman's every movement revealed a risible mockery of the female form and insulted our intelligence. Exit game, uninstall and abandon ship”

Uh... the only insulting thing here is that a fictional character can affect someone in such a way....

Male gamers too are finding this over-sexualization tiresome as well

Im not...

Also I dont know if Im the only one but I had a hard time reading through that, seems really amatuer...

I know I'm really offended every time I see a super ripped, huge guy as the protagonist in all these games. The man's every movement revealed a risible mockery of the male form and insulted my intelligence.

I'd like to be the first to post that every time I see an article like this posted, I click to read the comments hoping I won't see the type of guy who the article was written about. Damn it, one day I won't be disappointed.

Way to rip off the Slashdot Games article (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/12/09/160241&threshold=-1&tid=10) word-for-word, fernsho.

You know what the real problem is.? Not enough nudity in said games. I mean come on, Take your typical teen r rated movie. The women are Bimbo's with Large breasts and zero IQ's, The men are all powerful, and Nudity and Cleavage rule!!

Now when games start showing that stuff on a regular basis in 17+ games, and they rail against hollywood just as much then I'll listen to their opinions.

That was the dumbest read I have ever plodded through.

I'm pretty sure, that, if women were to start making more games, an article directly contrasting this one would appear. "Men are tired of playing woman-made games in which men are made out to be dumb, lazy meatheads."

I think T&A in games is fine.

Come on, who's whining about it in movies? Look at Alias for example... just as many girls love that show as guys. And Smallville. Not to mention thousands of movies.

Not really a surprise. We really need less ignorant game designers.

personally i find it annoying and disappointing that the female driven makeup and langerei(sp?) industries are so sexist as to not allow me to a model for them. the snobs.

OMGZ teh feminazis!

Seriously, though, I'm all for hot gaming chicks. The reason they're like is, is, as the article said, to suspend disbelief.

But the video game industry is startnig toward the same trend that made me stop looking up porn.

The boobies are getting too big, and there are too many goddamn sequels that are nothing like the originals.

Gaming Sites/Gaming Articles are becoming more and more like the National Enquirer.
It's all about page hits & adverts.
It's downright retarded.

The DOA women are my benchmark for how female characters should look, some big boobed, some not. Fit and fun to watch. I'm with punk though in that I want the proportions to be humanly possible.

The article was fairly slow and plodding. My takeaway is that women need to work more on their self empowerment rather than to blame the game industry and media for anorexia and self image problems. If the problem is TV, then stop watching TV. The media only has the power that you grant it. If you want empowerement, don't blame someone else, turn off the TV and head for the treadmill or go back to school.

Yeah, we could really use more ignorant forum nerd posters.A certain threshold of geekiness is required to even post in a gaming forum ;)

And no need to start slinging insults, man. I meant no offense.
