Gamespot is reporting (http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/story.php?sid=6140998) that the first update to Xbox 360's backwards compatibility has already been recalled because of an issue with the emulation of Halo 2.

...after the update was installed Halo 2 would only play in the standard 4x3 TV dimensions, not the 16x9 letterbox format used by high-definition televisions. Also, the game's graphics appeared compressed--a dramatic shift from its previously crisp, HD textures. When contacted by GameSpot, Microsoft reps confirmed the problem and said the new backwards-compatibility update has, for the time being, been removed from both Xbox.com and Xbox Live.
Looks like you lucky ones will be waiting a tad longer for the update...

Hmmm, I already got the update and it looked just fine to me from a week ago...was in 16x9. That's weird...

I imagine something like this could be a testing nightmare for MS

You may have the Novemeber update installled on your 360. The December one in question was only posted online today (or yesterday at the earliest).

Anyone know what the new games being added were? I assume it won't take them too long to fix this.

I dunno...I would think that console testing (especially automated regression testing) would be a lot easier than testing for multiple platforms.

I personally write and test POS software for a living, and I shudder anytime we introduce a new configuration. If you can standardize on 1 hardware configuration (XBox 360, for example) then your testing load should really lighten, leaving you that many more resources for thorough testing.

Bugs are a fact of life, but bugs on a console are a little harder to take patiently.

Kind of sad, but it hasn't been an issue with me. I have had no desire to play my old games yet...hell, the most addicting game so far is Hexen.

Hmm, seems like they should have implimented some kind of voluntary external testing program, basically so they have another testing tier between internal testing and a full release. Since there is seemingly potential for breaking products not covered in the update (seemed it was for other games, not H2, or did I miss something?) seems an extreme amount of testing may be needed to avoid this type of thing. I think they may have assumed since all the machines were the same, limited testing would suffice.

I think they put it back. I just powered up the 360 at 7pm EST, put in Splinter Cell, and it said a update was required to play the game. I installed the update and just played through the training course in Splinter Cell it works fine! I'm going to pop in Halo2 to see if its working ok now.

So, all of this emulation they are doing to run XBOX games on the 360, it can't just be on a game by game basis can it? I mean, I assume they are enabling some translators or backwards compatability on their system calls (in laypersons terms) so doesnt that stand to reason that other games not on the tested list might work too using those same system calls? Or did they specifically allow only certain games to be played?

I'm guessing that they are only allowing the games that have been approved, dispite the fact that other games may work.

baz is correct, they only allow games which are "ceritified" to play on the 360. If you put one in that isn't certified, even if the emulator would work with it, then the system will basically tell you to go screw yourself.

how the HELL did they let THAT get through!? i'm getting less and less confident in *** testing, not that i ever had any faith. the fact that they're letting some games through because they ran out of TIME just blows my MIND!
