In case you haven't heard yet, Vivendi has agreed to allow King's Quest IX to continue! They are granting a "fan license" to the makers of the games! The Save King's Quest IX campaign has been a success!

For more information, you can visit:
http://www.kqix.com
http://www.savekqix.org

I want to thank everyone who participated in the campaign. It is only because of your support that we were able to save the game.

To those of you who posted things like "this will never work" or "you are wasting your time" in this or other forums around the net, it is with great pleasure that I say this: YOU WERE WRONG. I don't say that to gloat. I say it to get your attention, and to make a point. The point is this: don't underestimate what people can do if they rally together for a cause they believe in. If you assume from the beginning that you can not change something, and you don't try, then you will definitely not be able to change it. But if you realize that it IS possible, and you DO try, then you DO have a chance at changing it. I hope everyone takes that to heart.

Again, thank you to everyone who sent letters and emails to Vivendi, as well as everyone that blogged about the campaign or otherwise helped to spread the word. Feel free to help spread the word about this wonderful piece of news.

Last but certainly not least, I want to thank Vivendi for listening to the fans and allowing the game to continue. If you'd like to write them and say thanks, their email address is: games.comments@vugames.com

Wow... Vivendi does something decent? o.0 I'm gonna have to rethink my stance with them.

Wow, I have to admit, that's pretty impressive. My congratulations to you for leveraging the power of the people and making it actually work. You'll have to forgive people's skepticism because frankly, this is the first time I've ever heard of a company actually allowing a group to move forward on this sort of project. I'll rephrase that in saying I've never seen a company officially give support/permission to a project - there have been some that a company just stays respectfully silent about.

I can't find anything official about this on Vivendi's own website, is there anywhere besides the kqix.com page where we can see the press release?

Hey, doing good things for the gaming community is a good way to gain goodwill towards your company. Nothing wrong with taking advantage of that, and it's certainly better than trying to win me over with a "corporate image" through advertising.

Big thanks to the VUG Community Managers and Moderators for communicating fan feeback.

I am willing to respect a company more, when they stop sitting on their old titles and have no desire to develop them, and thus allow the actual fans a go at them: without fear of legal action.

I hope these actions continue and will eventually be reciprated (sp) to allow System Shock out of limbo!

Holy shit. I'm not even a Kings Quest fan, but I consider this incredible news. That a big publisher, that fucking Vivendi, would release a license to the public like that... well consider my perception of Vivendi improved considerably.

This isn't the first time something similar has happened -- Quest for Glory 4 kinda bombed, so Sierra (coincidence?) wasn't going to make QFGV. They got so many fan letters and emails and even an online petition or two that over a year after the project was publically declared 'dead', they brought it back.

I loved the series, back in the day... admittedly QFGV sucked, but 1-3 were excellent, and ushered me into the RPG era, after a little Wizardry and Might and Magic.

Now I wish they'd bring back Space Quest, that was a great series.

KQ6 was the greatest fantasy adventure game ever made.

(Next to TLJ and Shannara of course.)

Well that's one of my dreams that will come true.

Still to materialize:

- Baldur's Gate 3
- real Fallout 3 (sorry, kathode, your game won't cut it)
- Ultima X
- Might and Magic X
- real Deus Ex 2
- real Super Mario 128
- Wind Waker 2
- Final Fantasy 13 with random encounters
- Wizardry 9

Sorry, I'm not into RTSes that much.
I didn't mention Diablo 3 cause that's already in the making ;p or so I hope.

First CD Rom game I ever had. I love the voiceover dude...

"Alexander must do...."
"Alexander feels...."

Good times. I still remember that Minataur battle...and find some shiny ring or something on the beach...it was a bitch.

That ring part was the first thing you do in the game.

Sometimes I wonder why adventure games died? I mean they were the closest in experience to reading a book - no twitchy gameplay, no skill based fragging just solving puzzles and moving from one screen to another, same as flipping a book page. I always relaxed when playing adventure games. Neither Quake nor Diablo or Deus Ex felt the same way; there was no fear in adventuring. Maybe that's why people didn't buy them. Books are cheaper and don't require a machine to enjoy.

Please?

Hot damn! This is great news.

For me, a lot of the fun was taken out of videogames when Sierra stopped producing games for its various Quest series. Like others have said in this thread, I really do miss the type of game these games represented; I felt far more satisfied when I completed them than I do with nearly any other game that's been released in the past 10 years (at least). But, that's just me; please don't take that as any sort of negative generalization about the quality of games that you might like to play.

Anyway, good luck Phoenix Online Studios; you clearly have a lot of people who are putting their faith into KQIX.

I must say, this is awesome.

KQ5 was the greatest game ever made. I just loved all the funny ways you could die.

And for all you people saying "wtf? Vivendi doing something good???", this isn't the first time they've done this.

Starsiege: 2845 (http://www.starsiege2845.com) is another game/series in the exact same position. Long forgotten as a money-maker, but Vivendi opened it up to fans so the community can continue the story.

AGDI did remakes of King's Quest 1 & 2 that work on Windows XP, and you can download them for free. They're really quite good. Check them out if you're itchin' to play some King's Quest.
