Signing into Xbox.com (http://xbox.com) today shows something different up in your navigation bar. Instead of displaying how many stars you have, which is mostly irrelevant information, Gold members now see a gold crown and the tag "Gold Member", along with a gold border around your gamerpic. Silver members get an advertisement that reads "Get Gold Today!" linking over to your account management page.
Is this an indication that Microsoft is sunsetting the star rating system? I can only hope so. Does anyone else notice any other changes?

The star rating system isn't gone, yet.

Yeah, its still on that... I just hope this is a slow removal of a worthless system.

Well, the system could be worth something if any raging jackass didn't have 5 stars no matter what.

The main flaw is that your star rating will just go up if no one complains against you... so if you've been playing online a ton, and only a few people file complaints, you'll still have 5 stars. Plus, there's no real usefulness for the star rating system either. You can't limit the people you play against based on that criteria.
But then again, if it was actually useful, some jackholes would exploit it no matter what you do.

No, irreverent is a word that means:
"lacking proper respect or seriousness"
In the context he uses it, it works.

I'm going to disagree with that.

I'm going to disagree with that.
Me too. My typo was just a real word, so spellcheck didn't deal with it properly.

Still waiting for them to put "Best Tester" back in your profile. It's only been like 5 years though so I guess I can wait some more. I miss that old tag.

I wish it had been more useful. The problem with it was that with 2 "prefer this player" you were at 5 stars and nothing anyone could do would drop you. That means that no matter how juvenile, or hateful an online player was he still was a 5 star player. Plus as far as I know there was no way to use the system to avoid the weenies of the internet, so what was the point?
Just the other day I thought to pick up Halo 3 again and my very first match was against a team of complete tools. I put them on my avoid list but there is essentially an unlimited supply of these people on Live. Might as well rename Live "The Toolbox" and at least have some truth in advertising.
It's perhaps my biggest disappointment in the new xbox Live. I remember when I was first reading about the tools that would be available to avoid players thinking the new system would be an instant fix for all that I hated about online gaming. Not even close. If anything I have come closer to giving up on online play entirely. There is no arguing the existence of John Gabriel's theory (http://http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19/) and probably never will be an effective counter to it other than just playing only with people on your friend's list.

Since I can't fix the link in my previous post. John Gabriel's theory (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19/).

Would be nice if they actually gave people a reason to become a Gold Member.

Star Rating isn't going... Microsoft have just swapped out that website space which doesn't earn money for something that does. Just basic conversion theory at work and no indication of Microsoft's like or dislike of the star system. Don't read into it more than that.

Netflix streaming? Online Multiplayer? You might be too cool for those or something but the rest of us like them.
