Discrimination Suit Filed Against Best Buy

Retailer Best Buy is being sued by six employees who are alleging that the company excludes women and minorities from top jobs.

Cheryl Chappel, a 48-year-old black woman, who works for a Best Buy in San Diego said, "I was told by several managers that I didn't need to be on the sales floor. I was told females can't sell."
I can only speak for my local Best Buy, but the staff diversity in that particular store (Durham, NC) is commendable. And get this, the so-called minority employees have always been more approachable and helpful than their white counterparts, whether they be male or female.

I am not sure why you thought I was referring to you, specifically, unless you have some type of guilty conscience. I was talking about people that take every lawsuit that hits the news as an excuse to go on a political tirade that has no connection to the case at hand, which they know nothing about. If you have ever watched O'Reilly for 5 minutes or listened to Rush Limbaugh you would know exactly what I was talking about. And that comment is not directed at all political conservatives, because there are political conservates that are not bombastic and arrogant. But it is hard to locate them amongst the many followers of the aformentioned individuals, followers who like to stamp about all cocky and arrogant and shout hyperbole in immitation of their faux alpha male media heroes. These type of stories attract those people because they love t use them as a soapbox in the same way they use a store's holiday signage as one (see other conversations ongoing on this site).

When read in the context of the whole story, though, I think it is fairly clear why it's there. Granted, some people just look at the editorial content and cry foul without digging deeper - there's nothing I can do to prevent that from happening.

Just to try and cover for some people here. I live in Minnesota, and the racism that exists here is very under covers. People don't come right out and act racist, but once someone leaves the room the n word might fly. It sucks, but that is the midwest for you. Then again there are some people who don't have a racist bone in them and still use archaic words like melado, negro (typically very old people, 80's and such), or oriental.

My brother is black and I am white (same mom different dads, my dad raised us both) and when we brought my nephew up to my grandmas (she lives in a rural part of MN) she referred to him as, "the most beautiful negro baby she had ever seen." My brother didn't bat an eye because he knows she isn't the least bit racist but I told her that that word isn't really appropriate anymore. She asked if it was ok if she used melado and my brother told her he didn't care what she said as long as it wasn't the other n word. So I told her that mixed or black was ok and she felt really bad. Some people in rural parts of the States just don't get the exposure to minorities that people in larger cities do. It doesn't mean they are racist (don't get me wrong, there are plenty that are), it just means that they haven't had the same exposure.

Is the minority the minority at the store? Yes. There is still more white employees at the store. But there 4 hispanic/latin employees, 4 black employees, 1 asian employee, and about 7 white employees so far. Few people I still haven't met there yet but that's a better mix than other place. And in Texas it's flipped recently if I'm not mistaken. Whites are a minority, not the majority. Reverse racism? That's cute.

Just a quick heads-up, mulatto is a term describing someone of mixed African and European decent. Native American-Europeans are known as "meztizos." These are both Spanish terms coined during their conquest of the Americas.

This isn't racist, its simple classification. Racism requires you actually put your classification above another in some way.
