View Full Version : Video Games Cause Skin Sores

According to "experts", gaming not only causes violence, desensitization, and makes people generally morally corrupt, but also causes skin sores.

"PlayStation palmar hidradenitis" is the name of the "new" disorder, which is identifiable as a series of sores on the palm of each hand. Researchers are backing up their claims with the case of a 12-year-old girl who ended up in a Swiss hospital with painful sores on her hands. She recovered after ten days away from a console, and it is said that her intense gaming sessions caused the problem.

Is it just me, or is this utterly ridiculous?

I would think, in terms of skin, Vitamin D deficiency.

Isn't that just a way of blaming computer games for a very common affliction such as friction burns? Admittedly, a 12 year old girl should not be playing games so much that their hands catch fire but still, it’s another ridiculous story trying to blame video games for problems that already exist.

First post on here, further confirming the ridiculousness of this story, that it forces me to fuel the debate.

I always hate when statements like this come from "scientists", when in reality it is just unreliable anecdotal evidence.

Fuck you, medical scientists. I had skin sores on my hand when I was SIX. It came from the hideous Nintendo cross-pad. You know what I did with them? I showed them off as a mark of PRIDE, bitch.

Kids today.

I had a "skin sore" in the shape of a crescent moon, about the size of a quarter on the palm of my hand from the evil N64.

I did to. It was from playing Mario Party, and was one of those damn minigames that required you to rotate the analog stick as fast as you can.

Ahhh.... the good old days.

Giving the condition a new name is the only dumb part.

Does anyone here reasonably dispute that rubbing any one spot too long, be it with a running shoe or a game controller, can cause a skin condition?

Some posters seem to be denying the possibility that playing games for way too long can cause skin irritation. Other than an exuberate love of video games, why do people think that this is impossible?

Finally, I see nothing in the article saying that this is a study concluding that video games cause skin conditions. Just that in this particular case, overplaying led to skin irritation, which sounds very reasonable.

Giving it a new name, dumb.

Its called a friction burn. The fact that they are acting as though it is unique to gaming is whats stupid.

When I used to play Guilty Gear 8 hours a day my thumb was destroyed until I built up a thick ass callous. Then I was immune.

Mine was caused by the same thing... about 4-5 of those minigames in a row... after the games im thinking my palm seems rather warm, wonder why that is.

I believe that you are describing the common condition "Wankus dermatitus". Maybe you need to try a slow jerk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkgMbU-we1o).

During the height of my PSX days, my social group displayed our "Playstation thumbs" as badges of honor!

When we got the first Mario Party for N64, I had huge blisters on my palms from grinding the analog stick around in circles for those retarded mini games. So yes, video games do cause skin sores.

I always hate it when people automatically reject a medical phenomenon they probably don't even begin to understand because it disagrees with their worldview.
