ExtremeTech (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1884712,00.asp)has a review up of the XBox 360 controller on PC. Got a 360? Got a wired controller? Well, no problem, you can use it on your PC.
You don't even need the driver disc, because drivers are already up on Windows Update and are found automatically when you plug in the controller for the first time and choose the option to search online for drivers. In other words, if you want one of these things, you can just as easily buy the Xbox 360 controller and download the drivers, because there's no difference at all. Just make sure you don't buy a wireless controller, as they don't work with Windows.
Looks like some stores are ripping you off by pricing the "PC-version" of the controller a bit higher.

Actually, I think that's Microsoft ripping you off. They feel a driver CD and different packaging is worth 5 extra dollars.

I'm really surprised MS isn't offering a wireless reciever you can plug into you computer's usb port. It seems like the obvious way to make a couple of extra bucks.

Dude.. you didn't read the article. MS has said the RRP for both controllers is the same... some shops are just adding $5 for fun.

Once again... the article states that wireless support is coming

I'm using one of these to play San Andreas on my PC (and hopefully soon PoP3). It is definitely the best PC controller around.
The only downside is the lack of customization software for remapping analog axis's. The 360 controller maps the right analog to X/Y rotation, and the triggers to the Z axis (left is +Z, right is -Z). So unfortunately San Andreas doesn't recognize or use the triggers or right stick.
Hopefully this will serve as the "model controller" in the future. It could really help the state of PC gaming in franchises that benefit from a gamepad.

I really like the feel of the new xbox 360 controller. Too bad I don't play any game on the PC that requires a controller.
Need to find a good platform game to justify the purchase. Any good suggestions?

How about PC and Console game makers just let me customize each button and stick required by the game.
I use whichever controler NES SNES DC ARCADE DS2 N64 etc through adaptors.
Sure the controller is a huge part but for Tony Hawk alone I obey the symitry of the DS2 the PS3 controler bites hard.
If we had simple customisation for every input sooooo many annoying problems would be solved.
And MrMeatshake the article mentioned that you shouldn't buy the wireless controllers because they are not compatable with Windows OS=)
I would think on purpose because use of auto update in pro microsoft households would lead to strange popups on "daddys work puter"
Hopefully the driver support is a shitload better all round than than frigging nintendo wifi dongle.
The dongle device kills home networks and nintendo support is NIL!
Support you freaking product if it touches my pc damn you game companys! Whoever the fuck you may be!

Well, the Xbox 360 wired controller is essentially a standard USB HID compliant controller, much simpler to support than a bridge to a proprietary network. Of course Microsoft, being Microsoft, has more experience with Windows driver development in house than any company in the world.
Junkie24: Prince of Persia, the Two Thrones is very good. You might also find the first in the new series, Sands of Time in the bargain bin. I was thinking about picking it up for PC to justify buying a 360 controller, but I got it for Gamecube instead.

This is my plan, but I want to be sure it works, first. The SoT demo doesn't work right with an Xbox controller + adapter.

The Controller flat out sucks for PC gaming. Until they add an ability to adjust deadzones, and flip the axes to allow you to use both analog sticks properly in games that could be using them. The driver is pure garbage. :( which is really disapointing cause for madden you can't use over half the features.
So, what about a wireless controller with the 'plug and charge' kit. Obviously that provides a USB connection, you just wouldn't be able to play with it 'wireless' without some sort of receiver. Has anybody tried it?

Is this problem game specific or windows specific? I mean I have a logitech game pad for my pc, its pretty much an exact copy of the PS2 dual shock, and games like POP: Warrior Within worked flawlessly. Left analogue for moving and right analogue for camera.
Wouldn't work. The instructions for the play and charge kit says that all it does it charge the battery. It doesn't convert the pad to a wired one; it still communicates wirelessly whilst charging.

alkalinejeebus, crackeriah: ControlMK (http://www.redcl0ud.com/controlmk/) might help with your respective issues. :) Just bind the game functions to the keyboard/mouse and use ControlMK to bind the controller input to those as well.

Thanks a lot! I've been looking for software to do something like this and wasn't having much luck. This should make the gamepad much more useful for GTA:SA.
