We know that the Wii is not a graphical powerhouse but it can at least support progressive scan. MadWorld however? Does not. You'll be playing it in 480i Widescreen. IGN (http://blogs.ign.com/Matt-IGN/2009/02/19/113115/):
Confirmed it today and it's unfortunate. But to be fair, it still looks so damned good that I didn't notice. Only when I went to capture some videos and my equipment read it as 480i did I realize the truth.
You must still buy this game, but this omission raises an interesting point. Usually, lack of 480p support can be credited to developer laziness. No way such a claim can be leveled at Platinum Games or MadWorld. This is a AAA developer which constantly pushes the artistic limits and MadWorld is the latest proof of that. I'm wondering, then, if the studio simply wasn't aware that 480p is "kind of a big deal" for a chunk of Wii owners.
Thanks Nintendo Joystiq (http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/madworld-wont-run-in-480p-consolation-multiplayer-footage/)
You'd think with something that many 'core' gamers are keeping their eyes on, that you'd want to cater to their wants/needs as much as possible. I'm still wary about this game... looks too much like a stylized Manhunt clone.

480i only? Someone had a bad case of the retarded when they fucking made the game 480i only, what do they think this is 2000?
If you game can't run in 480p this day in age on the hardware your making it for then your making the game WRONG or your making it on the WRONG machine.

What I did with my

Given to my Dad.
Maybe if they cared
About people who play games
I would give a shit.

It's nothing like Manhunt. It is more akin to DMC meets God Hand done right. Very fun to play, IMO.

sheesh, this is ridiculous. 480p doesn't cost that big of a hit. it has nothing to do with performance and is most likely developer laziness.
Considering that the TV my Wii is hooked up too is only 480i. I won't even notice a difference!

Too bad this'll drastically alter the gameplay.

I did not realise the Wii had Graphic Whores, seams like a pretty pointless thing to be on a Wii.

Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999!
I think the most important thing he write was "But to be fair, it still looks so damned good that I didn't notice."

Yea, but even as the guy said, he really didn't notice. I think the tech freaks that'd bitch about the lack of the feature are gonna bitch about something anyways, it's their way. The people that just want a good looking, stylized game, seemingly aren't affected.

My cable comes in interlaced. It's 1080 pixels, but it's interlaced and it pisses me off. However, I'm sure madworld will look better than my cable because art direction is king!

I don't think anyone's TV signal comes in any flavor higher than 1080i.
It would be a big difference in bandwith for minimal difference.
480i and 480p? I would think this would be more noticable on bigger screens, but I could b wrong...

I would think you have to go out of your way to make a game 480i.

pfft, whatever, point is 480i looks like ass and always has, 480p is good enough on anything but a 50in tv. Its the resolution not the graphics.

If you can tell where there deinterlacing is done, you have a shitty HDTV.

How is this an issue? Any progressive scan display worth gaming on deinterlaces pretty well to begin with, and in my own experience Wii games look best played on an interlaced CRT with component cables.

If he did, then he was probably at the New York Comic Con and I'd therefore be doubly-jealous. That bastard.

I'd wager the devs opted not to include 480p because they were cranking up the graphics. Omissions like this usually occur when there are certain visual aspects that can't be sacrificed (and from the looks of it, MadWorld probably has plenty), so the rendering itself is gimped to compensate and keep performance solid. Similar examples: Uncharted with its absent V-Sync and resultant screen tearing (and that one was definitely made with graphics whores in mind), GTA4 on the PS3 with its not-quite-HD-upscaled-to-HD resolution, etc etc.
Basically, I think the developers knew what they were doing. Dunno how much this impacts the look of the game, tho.

+1
Why do people even care about graphics in a mostly black&white game?

I suppose I would care but my Wii stays on my standard def tv, it just looks better that way.

Yup. Very fun, very refined. Violence combo system is very neat and makes you think about how to get the highest multiplier using different objects and death traps on the environment.

Don't blame the developer for this, there are some good technical reasons to make this trade-off (e.g. antialiasing).
