Thanks to Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net) for the latest round up (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=62063) of bonkers Xbox 360-related happenings on eBay.
...you might be interested in the solid gold Xbox 360 faceplate (http://cgi.ebay.com/Poor-Mans-Microsoft-Xbox-360-SOLID-Gold-Face-Plate-999_W0QQitemZ8240583453) that's been listed by "a private seller who wishes to remain anonymous, as with anyone who has too much money than they know what to do with."
Some people really need to step away from their computers and go get some fresh air! Or read a book. Anything's got to be better than bidding on some of the items listed in the news piece.

Hmmm... "poor man" and a $36,000 xbox360 faceplate really don't seem to go together to me.

Hmm... free shipping. So you don't have to worry about that added cost, which is good.

Hell, if someone buys it, more power to this guy. I'm sure there's many other items people too rich and dumb to know what to spend things on buy all the time.
If someone buys it I am gonna put my college education up on ebay maybe someone will buy it w00t! free ride!

At the current price of gold, 900 grams is worth approximately $17,000. Even if you factor in the cost of actually making the thing, he'll still be nearly doubling his investment if he's able to sell it for $36,000.
The only "trick" here is that you could make your own gold face plate for half the price.
Oh, and it seems he has a long history of selling $5 items for what appears to be a company.
Why would "your crazy rich friend" get you to sell their expensive item? Because you have an account you used for your company that has a postive feedback rating.
That said, I doubt he's a crook or anything. He's obviously just looking to make money.

That gold can't be that pure if it's going to be used for a faceplate. I would assume that whoever made this knew that it was going to be used as a faceplace, and would therefore get handled a lot. Gold is very malleable, so the person making it would probably want to use a hardened gold alloy containing zinc, copper, silver, and nickel. For it to be reasonably hardened, I would imagine that the alloy is 50% to 60% gold. That reduces the value of it significantly. Also, the other metals in the alloy can oxidize and be corroded after time, so while the gold might resist that, after a while, you've got a metal faceplate that is 40% corroded.

But wait! There's more!
The hilarity continues as ALL new X360 units are bought out by the squads of eBay-savvy entrepreneurs. HO HO HO Merry Christmas Ebay! Too bad for consumers, who get the worst shaft of all time. (excluding perhaps cabbage patch dolls)
