Men in tights... From 1up:
Marvel MMO To Be Developed By Sigil
We've received word that Sigil, the development house behind Vanguard, will do the work on the upcoming Marvel Comics MMO. The team has many members who worked on Everquest, so they're accustomed to the MMO format.

Think of the possiblities. Customizing your character to match your own naked body using a digital camera? Sign me up.
The last thing I want is just another game with the MMO "format". Guild Wars opened my eyes to just how stale MMOs have become. I'm sick of EQ clones. And I had hope for this one...

If they could do City of Heroes Costume generation (on an even grander scale with even more options), combined with Freedom Force's power selection, I'd give it a whirl. I loves me some CoH/V, but the way the powers are set up/earned in CoH/V works my hole. The costumes may be different but under the lycra it's all the same. Combine the two and you've got a winner, IMO.

Sigil was started by Brad McQuaid. That's enough right there to ensure I will not even sign up for beta testing, let alone pay for any product that Sigil puts out.
This blithering idiot was behind some of the worst design decisions in the development of Everquest. Just read this part of thier FAQ for Vanguard:
1.6.4.1 I've heard that Sigil has a number of 'tenets' related to MMOGs... could you share a few?
Here are a few, in no particular order:
1. More smaller carrots, more often.
(Meaning, control the rate of advancement of characters, but have them advance in smaller ways more often so you get feedback/new abilities/etc. more frequently but in smaller doses).
.....
4. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
(This applies to a great many things, but in general to the recent reactionary trend to respond to traditional MMOG mechanics that have had some problems by completely removing them as opposed to fixing them. Travel is tedious? Remove travel! People are camping and ninja looting and being rotten to each other in a dungeon? Remove the other people! (Instancing). Sigil, rather, is intent on fixing and tweaking traditional MUD/MMOG mechanics that have existed for so long, not throwing them out).
The mentality behind those "tenents" makes me cringe. I'll never play another game that is designed like Everquest, and it looks to me like Brad hasn't learned a damn thing.
Add to those concerns this: Sigil's publisher is Microsoft Gaming Studios....
We all know how well they have faired in the MMORPG market...

I freaking agree. That would kick ass. Aside from the gay part. Fully interactive brothels though! :D

Here's the thing. . . Sigil has no games yet, and Vanguard has been in development for more than 3 years. So far, they've only gotten to Alpha.
Also, they are understaffed for the task of ANOTHER MMO. Consoles only have about a 5 year half-life. Do they expect to take 4 years to get the Marvel MMO completed too?
Good luck. I hope I'm wrong and that they are all brilliant. . . but they have developers who are very proud of the work on Everquest, which was good in it's very early pioneer day, but would be laughably terrible today. Also, they have people who worked on EQ II, which is just a train wreck considering the development time invested in it.
I hope Vanguard is really wonderful though. I'm so ready for the MMO industry to catch up to WoW and CoH. It would be awesome if we had to CHOOSE which fun "eat six months to a year or more of your life" game to choose from instead of having to try all the nasty ones to see if they were okay. . . like the Every Flavor Beans in the Harry Potter books.

Well, it's just too bad that hack-n-slash games like Guild Wars and Diablo offer an experience about as deep as a saltine cracker, or maybe they'd actually hold my interest for more than a few hours.
Bash not, lest ye be bashed in return.

I have never played an MMO with depth. They are time sinks where people do the same shit for tiny rewards along with the rest of the shitty community. Even the best are totally filler. MMOs are the salad you eat while waiting for your steak.

Your opinion might mean something to me if I didn't see you post earlier today in the Bed Bath & Beyond forums about flower-printed oven mits.

It will be interesting to find out exactly how Marvel Online will work... I mean, obviously you won't be playing the Marvel characters, but doesn't that just make it CoH... but instead of talking to Statesman to get a quest, you ask Cyclops?
Meh. I'll pass. Very few established, character-based licenses would work as MMOs -- not so much gameplay-wise, but capturing the feel of the setting they are using(see SWG, and most likely LotRO). That, and Sigil is run by the King of Tedium.

Yea, he might have been there, but what were YOU doing there? Hmm?
Thanks perigon, I would love flower printed oven mits, gotta stop burning my hands baking you those cakes.

You mean like, a giant gang bang? I dont think there's enough of her to go around.
Not simultaneously. But she'll make her way around eventually.
If this thing is developed like an MMO in tights, with the healers and support classes and that bullshit CoH screwed up - it'll be pure crap.
Someone needs to make a real superhero game, that just happens to be a massmog.
