Shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/57194) is running a quick little story, letting everyone know that Valve has confirmed that the first DLC pack for the zombie-pocolypse game Left 4 Dead titled the "Survival Pack", will be free for both Xbox360 and PC users.
The "Survival Pack" downloadable content for Valve's cooperative zombie shooter Left 4 Dead will be free for both PC and Xbox 360 players, the company confirmed today.
Due out this spring, the download will add a new Survival mode, in which players attempt to survive endless hordes of zombies on at least 12 maps, and allow the Dead Air and Death Toll campaigns to be played in the competitive multiplayer Versus mode.
Sweet deal for everyone!

Sweet! That stuff better be free. Maybe I was spoiled by the Orange Box and the free content for TF2, but I feel like L4D was always a bit light in content for the price, so I am glad to see more coming.

Sponsored by whom, I wonder?

The most important part of this DLC (unless it's been scrapped), is the SDK being released. There is a disturbance in my pants over the thought of custom campaigns.

Is that 'survive on 12 existing maps' or 12 new maps made for that mode?

Exactly. There no way MS is letting this happen on the 360 out of the goodness of their hearts, smells like sponsorship.

Did you happen to notice that they allowed it to happen with Criterion?
I think that Valve is the one whom probably pulled some strings to make this work on 360. I had no doubts that it would be free on PC; but I'm sure that they'd have HELL to pay if this was pay on 360 and free on PC.

Regardless of who did what to make it happen, the fact that it's FREE on BOTH platforms is a win for gamers that play the game (especially those who only play it on the 360).

I thought Microsoft forced devs to charge for DLC...

I really hate to bitch about free stuff, but
Due out this spring,...
I'm afraid for me, at least, I'm worried I will be completely engrossed in another FPS (Killzone 2) to get back into L4D by then. I half hope that's not the case - not to wish ill on KZ2 - but because I've enjoyed L4D a ton since getting it.
Ah well, I suppose there could be worse problems to have than the possibility of too many good games.

Free is a great price!

I could be totally wrong, but wouldn't that be more like they allowed it to happen with EA the publisher rather than Criterion the developer? Also, doesn't Burnout Paradise have a large amount of real-world ads in the game? Perhaps some of that money was used to subsidize the free addon?
Like I said, I'm probably totally wrong but Burnout makes money after the disc is purchased for EA and maybe that could be used to create the content.
Just sayin'.

The new Survival mp mode sounds frickin' sweet!
I've always wondered why they didn't put a mode like that, in the original game. It seems so obvious for a game, like Left 4 Dead is.

Oh, and free is nice!
Hopefully other game makers will follow Valve, and hopefully MS will stop charging for packs that should be free.

I'm almost positive it has everything to do with the simple fact that it's available for free on PSN as well, not just the publisher. If Microsoft had attempted to charge for the same content PS3 users could get for free, most people would flock to the PS3 version.
That is, of course, the situation with Criterion's game.
I'm not sure what Valve would have done to accomplish this epic feat.
L4D Horde? Sweet.
A few friends and me had been playing (before my RROD) the campaign missions with the intent of setting off as many alarms and getting puked on as much as possible. Having the zombies come to me is much more convenient!

That's what John Blow kept crying about. I wonder if they're as evil as he says they are or if he's just a self-rightous prick. (Yet, I love his game)

While free is great, I don't see anything about new campaign maps which is all I really want. The original 4 are starting to get a bit boring.

You kids get off my lawn!
Odd, the fun came built into my 360. I had to buy Blu-ray movies to find the fun in my PS3!!!

Yes! As it should be.
And no, Evil, if you don't like the game already, chances are it isn't for you. ;)

I second the "original game was too light for the price" idea. Can't wait to dig my claws into this dlc. Survival mode? Hell yeah
And I really hope they patch some stuff. Because if one more licker pulls me off of that roof for an instakill...

Great news, especially for 360 owners.
I have both versions, so its nice that I wont be forced to pay for content on one version that I got for free on another.

...sooo, is it a patch or DLC? It used to be that patches were free and DLC wasn't. What's the goddamned distinction these days?
