Didn't get a premium system? Don't like the new Live headset? Spend lots of cash on that cool Halo 2 headset? Well you can use your headset on your brand new 360 but you will not have volume control and mute. Gamersreport (http://www.gamersreports.com/article/17/) can solve that.
Many of you have been complaining that the headset that comes with the Xbox360 is inferior to all other headsets out there. You can plug any new headset into the Xbox360 jack, but you will loose mute and volume functionality. Well we are here to tell you how to fix that with a simple mod.
Since not so many people seem to know this, I think this is a very useful news item for the Live fans.

They can rewire the PS2 headset to work on the 360, but when it comes to the word "lose" vs. "loose", they're screwed. :(

Makes sense. Somebody should try it with a senn pc150 set, that way they'll still get volume control and on/off(equiv of mute).
They can even do the hacking on the USB attachment for the Senn, if they don't use that piece and not have to worry about breaking it for normal use.

ummm, correct me if I'm wrong
I thought the ability was there already to plug any headset into the bottom of the controller and increase/decrease/mute the volume of said headset through a simple push of the xbox guide button. I don't have an Xbox 360 to prove this, but I read this as one of the features before the 360 came out, so isn't this modding pretty pointless? It's pretty much just circumventing having to pull up the guide to increase/decrease/mute the volume, and in my experience with Xbox Live, I only had to increase/decrease the volume maybe once or twice during the time I have been playing on Live since the beta till now. I guess the annoyance would be muting the mic then.
Can anyone who has a 360 confirm if the ability to use any mic and control the volume through the guide is there, and how many button presses it takes to do so?

I don't get why they didn't just allow you to remove the headset they shipped with from the base. Very bad and irritating design decision.
Not sure about the guide button thing. . . I'll try that tonight.

You can mute and change volume by pressing the Guide button, selecting Peronal Settings, and then Voice. But it's still not as convenient as the switch and dial.

In somewhat related news, that website that was tracking all the online vendors for xbox 360 stock showed it instock for some place called East Luna. I clicked hoping to maybe get an order in if it was reputable, but everyone trying to get one crashed their server. Or at least max connections were reached. Hah!
