A November 16 filing at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office reveals Take-Two Interactive has applied for trademark of the name "BioShock" for a videogame. It isn't a fantastic leap, then, to suspect the publisher has picked up Irrational's latest project, announced last fall.

Created by a majority of the team behind System Shock 2, BioShock is a first-person action RPG set against an alternate World War II. Though the game is not directly related to System Shock 2, it shares that title's open-ended design.
Okay, the subtitle of IGN's news blurb (http://pc.ign.com/articles/672/672410p1.html) doesn't make any sense. Nonetheless, Irrational's been liplocked since after their little unveiling last year. My offer for interview was amicably turned down as well.

Fall of 2006 is my best estimate at this point.

I suppose it could mean that when the BioShock title was picked up (perhaps bankrolled) by Take2, owning the name was part of the deal. I really enjoyed Tribes: Vengance, despite it's lukewarm reception. As for Bioshock itself, I suspect the project may haven been going under alot of reworking: the idea sounded good, but an ecosystem simulator may have been more trouble than actually just fudging the entire system.

That Japanese girl in the corner is still distracting me.

Tribes Vengeance wasn't a bad game, but it strayed a bit too much from the Tribes formula to really hook me into multiplayer. I am definitely looking forward to Bioshock though, as System Shock 2 was one of the first shooters I played with my brother when we hooked up the home network for the first time.

Is there anyone playing Tribes: vengence online if so I'd be interested in buying it.

I saw a developer interview video over at gamespot about Bioshock... looks good. Loved all the system shocks. I'm hoping they keep it a PC exclusive game for more depth.

Have IGN's subtitles ever made much sense?

I was so looking forward to this, loved the System Shocks, thought BioShock was going to be thematically similar, but another WW2 fps?! This is most disturbing indeed.

Eww, I just saw that too - was this always the case? It's been so long since the initial announcement of the game I've forgotten.

Edit: A buddy of mine just told me that the original release said the game is set around a genetic engineering facility USED in WWII, not actually set in the WWII era. That's for the best I think.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
ME needss more shocksess..
SS and SS2 are two of my top10 games ever, and SS2 is probably #2. Or 3. Anyway, bioshock is supposed to be set in an abandoned Nazi research lab, not in WW2 itself. Kinda like all those nazi stuff in Hellboy comics, only without the interdimensional demons. Or maybe WITH them, who knows.

I hope Bioshock is PC exclusive, I'll never forgive consoles for Deus Ex IW. PCs are the only home for very cool and complex FP-RPGs.
