Hammer & Sickle is a tactical RPG set in the spring of 1949. The player will assume the role of a top Soviet spy on clandestine duty in the British-American controlled sector of Germany during the early years of the budding Cold War. In a world where no one is quite who they appear to be, the player is trapped in a hellish ploy that could trigger a third world war, this time between the United States and Soviet Union and their respective nuclear arsenals. Gamers will have to navigate a web of intrigue and make decisions that could determine the fate of the world.
CDV has released a demo for Nival's strategy game Hammer & Sickle allowing you to check out some cutscenes and one mission from the full game.

I read the Gamespy review on this one yesterday and it seems like the person reviewing it would not have liked Silent Storm either.... which is weird, because Gamespy did give Silent Storm a full rating... one would think that the person who review Silent Storm and Sentinels would review Hammer & Sickle as well....

Why?
Seems to me he didn't like it cause the game suck. Not because he didn't like Silent Storm. I am also not sure why you think he didn't like Silent Storm.

Because his grief with the game is the core mechanic for all Silent Storm games:
But as interesting as the combat is in theory, it's mostly dull in practice. It's not nearly as deep as all the game's stats and numbers would like you to believe. Odd pathfinding can make movement a chore. Worst of all, it takes way too long time to get anything done. The game can take ages to calculate enemy actions, so you're left twiddling your thumbs. It also makes you sit by idly as irrelevant civilians take turns doing nothing of consequence well out of sight. A simple little battle can easily drag on for an hour or more. Worse, you'll often need to repeat encounters to avoid gotcha attacks or figure out the gimmick for winning.
That is exactly what happens during Silent Storm and Sentinels.
The original Silent Storm review states:
I'd like to drive that point home again, lest the tone of this review convince strategy game fans that they don't want to pick up this game. The core gameplay -- the strategic engine, if you will -- of Silent Storm is beyond reproach. For those gamers unfamiliar with such titles, a turn-based squad-level game places you in charge of a small group of soldiers, each with a certain number of "Action Points." Every action, whether it's running, firing a weapon, or bandaging a wound, costs a certain number of points. Run out of points and your turn is over -- now the enemy gets to go. Play continues until all the soldiers die or you achieve your mission objectives. It's that simple.
Obviously the Hammer and Sickle reviewer guy is not a turned based strategy fan and the guy who reviewed Silent Storm was.
The Hammer and Sickle review is like a Catholic priest doing a review on "Lesbian hussies weekly"

The fan base for turn-based squad strategy is small ergo the review was handed off to whomever would take it: it wasn't important if they liked the genre, just having a spiffy article to coincide with the demo release.

Why would you listen to a gamespy review at all?

Or maybe the game is really not great. Maybe it has some of the same problems as Silent Storm, only without the good parts that made Silent Storm get good reviews. I guess you can always wait for more reviews to see what the general consensus is.

I've had russian version of Hammer & Sickle for months now. It's really good but i seem to be completely incompetent to play it. I'm not even able to pass first mission :)

Well... I can see an idea behind it. Same as gamyspy reviewer gave it low score because he didn't get it?
