XBox 360: Beyond the Launch [Archive]

The XBox 360 launch consisted of 19 titles. But what's next? And when? IGN (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/663/663048p1.html) answers those questions and gives you the low down on what's coming. Right now they have 15 titles in their sights by Spring of 06. According to them, Halo 3 should be out this year. True or not, when Halo 3 does come out, it's gonna sell a friggin ton, that is...if Microsoft can get those 360's in people's hands.

What do we know about Halo 3? It's in development for Xbox 360 by Bungie. It's the third in the Halo trilogy. And it follows Master Chief and his devastated marine crew to Earth as they defend it from the technically superior Covenant in their search for the secret of the Forerunners. Oh yeah, and they need to stop all of the other Halos from blowing the universe into smithereens. Easy story. Officially, Microsoft has only said it's working on Halo 3, but we know that the game will take be both a first-person shooter off- and online, that it will have a single-player co-op mission (it better!), and that a gazillion Halo fanboys will come running to buy this mega-blockbuster, screaming, kicking, and touting their clan over everyone else's. Also, we bet the story is better. Just our guess, of course. Oh yeah, and we're guessing a faction of the Covenant will team up with the world's favorite and only remaining Spartan to solve all the mysteries of the Marathon-linked universe.
From what I hear, Gears of War is simply amazing. Ghost Recon looks solid and of course there's the launch title gone spring title Oblivion. How many other of these games are going to get delayed though?

That seemed like a pretty solid list of titles for the coming months. Now, whether those titles will make those dates or not is something to be seen, but I'd be pretty satisfied about the system's early legs if those are correct.

They're full of crap and making stuff up.

Microsoft has said that Bungie is working on Halo 3, but Bungie has basically said "shut up Microsoft. We're not saying what we are or are not working on"

And besides that, J Allard has hinted at the fact that the next Bungie title is NOT going to be a Halo game.

They're listing titles that are coming in 2007! as first wave xbox360 titles. lol.

The Outfit looks like a cool game, but since it is by relic, there'll probably be a better version for the pc, one hopes. Gears of War has always looked cool, hopefully it won't play like unreal with new graphics.

I'd sacrifice CliffyB Squeaky Fromm style and burn every dev kit that has Gears of War on it if Blizzard would retool StarCraft: Ghost for 360. Blizzard has a more compelling story in their damn manuals than "Special" Cliff has in his whole cerebral cortex.

mercenaries was one of the few recent titles that had me playing all the way to the end.
i, too, am obviously semi-excited for this one. gears of war has potential, but i have a scary feeling the SP is gonna be 10 hours or less, as is the norm nowadays.

Are you talking to me? When have I said I hated Microsoft? Sure, I bet you could dig up some forum posts where I've been critical of them, sometimes cruelly so, but I don't hate them. I own an Xbox and will own a 360 someday. In the same boat, I don't love Sony. I like the games the machine puts out more than the Xbox software, but that's because I have diverse tastebuds.

Heart attack or not, I'd love to hear an answer to that one. Besides high quality artwork, I didn't see anything interesting either (in fact, the continuous use of "cover" made the game look like it'd be fairly tedious to me).

Looking forward to Oblivion, but I'll probably have to rent everything else before I decide to buy anything. Of course, I'll also have to get a 360 first.

I hope Gears of War, or some of these other titles, have better XBox live integration than the release titles. None of the early titles are addictive like Halo 1 and 2 were.

Bungie was the only company that ever got the "Lan Party" atmosphere down for Live. Solid gameplay is great, but the thing I loved about Halo 1 was the social aspect of it in addition to that. Ranking systems, parties. . . Halo 2 and Battlefield 2 type stuff. Anyway, I digress.

I'm excited for the new games though. . .its just the waiting now.

Agreed, Metroid Prime, Tales Of Symphonia, Rouge Leader, and tons of other unique and quirkey little games that you'll miss if you dont own a cube.

Actually PD0 makes pretty good use of "cover" and I have not really felt that the game is more tedius because of it.

Well that's good to hear, I just got the sense it was a big part of the game. Used in moderation, it'd certainly be emmersive and improve variation (BTW, I'm talking about the whole wait behind something, wait for break in firing, fire burst, hide, repeat).

Yeah, I've had my reservations about the game since I heard about the focus on cover because I'm not a big fan of that scenario you just described. However, PD0 has proven to me that it can be implemented without turning the game into a tedious tactical combat game.

Speaking of the Cube - how's Cubivore? I saw it used at Fuc...I mean EBGames for 20 bucks - is it worth that for a used copy? I never did play it. Not even really sure what exactly the game is about, it just has a cool art style.

Wave Race Blue Storm is an awesome game. I really want to get a cube again just for that one.

The presentation is amazing, and the water physics are just brilliant. Each track is available in a number of weather conditions, and it's so much fun to see how the tracks change due to the weather, especially the first time. For instance, there is one track that has a pretty simple turn in it around a gigantic old tree. On the hurricane like storm setting, a bolt of lighting strikes the tree and it falls into the water sending a massive ripple right at your and your competition. Fighting the waves and the wakes of the other players makes each track basically different every single time you play.

I wish it was harder though, it was too easy for full price. If you can find it for 20 bucks or so it's a gem you need to pick up.

Not worth full price, but I found it a quirky and entertaining enough game while it lasted.

You start off as a little cube and have to survive/evolve by fighting other animals, eating them and matching different coloured parts/cubes to find new forms. The more forms you find, the more levels you open up.

Not everyone's cup of tea, and can get quite frustrating at times, but the sense of satisfaction from being the baddest bastard around more than makes up for that.
