You may know Ctrl+Alt+Del (www.ctrlaltdel-online.com), and coming soon there will be animated CAD episodes!
Ok, you're not dreaming. Ctrl+Alt+Del is going animated.
The Animated Series will debut in February of 2006, consisting of a brand new 4-5 minute animated short every month. All new material, fully animated, featuring professional voice actors hand chosen from over 1400 auditions. The episodes are written by me, directed/produced by Ryan Sohmer and Randy Waxman, the great guys over at Blind Ferret Entertainment, and brought to life by a professional animation studio.
New site: www.cad-animation.com (http://www.cad-animation.com)
Apparently there will be a premium but this is very interesting. Wish I liked CAD more than I have this year though.

Ok I just watched the trailer and dear god I want to kill myself. Could the music be any more bland?

<tries to comprehend what *else* the animation could have looked like ... brain explodes>
Well, damn. I'm sure it could have looked like psychedelic mushrooms or something. But I guess they weren't sucking the doobie the day they came up with this. ..I hear they tried to make it 3d, but it got them really paranoid about "the man", so they layed off the sweet smoke for a couple of days. :D
...On a more serious note: Damn! This sounds hot. Excellent development for an excellent comic IMHO.

I still feel like some of Tim's best stuff was back when Ethan got "the tie" and when loony. I dunno really, haven't been following him as much lately but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see what's cookin' with CAD.
As for that trailer, it could have been a hell of a lot worse. Music was probably the worst part, but that's nothing that couldn't be fixed easily.

It's a trailer for an animated series that hasn't been made yet. Lighten up about it, guys. The music will come.

I really like the comic but voices are always the crucial part of making an animated series good. Here's hoping it won't suck!

This is probably why Tim Buckley went ape shit on some little kid who made a fan animation of CAD for a high school class.
The guy's an onerous little toad and his success continues to confound me.
edit: That's not true. I know why he succeeded. Hopping on the gamer webcomic bandwagon at just the right time. How he continues to succeed though, it's a myyyyystery...

I didn't mind the comic until about last year, around this time, and I think he said he met his girlfriend about that time so I blame that.
Its definately (sp?) not an exceptional comic. Its not even good ever now. I hate the way he goes with who he is currently into. Last year he was all harping on about being good friends with the Applegeeks guy Hawk, and had him do the cover of his first book. Then in an interview recently he was saying that he hadn't been on Applegeeks for ages, bit odd if you guys were friends. He is saying he is more buddy buddy with Vgcats guy and 8bit theater guy, and I'm wondering if he is now saying CAD has a story for it to be more like 8BT. The story is pathetic though, its been consistently terrible. Also, were does your main character being repetitively killed by arrows in the past fit into your story Tim? This year he was going on about saving conneticon, and next year he isn't even bothering to go from what I remember, he is only going to 1 convention and doing this CAD thing, thats prety small anyway from the sounds of it. He is just generally pretty annoying often to be honest.
The tie thing was the best thing he did. I have heard a lot of things about Tim being a complete cock, and to his fans but I a haven't seen much of it myself yet as far as I know, he does get quite arsey sometimes though.
I remember him moaning recently about people saying "Who is this guy" to that Pierre bloke who helped woth the new site, but I don't think that guy should neccesarily be a newsposter, as hes just a web site peon essentially, he doesn't make the comic that is the main point of CAD. PA has stayed great for like..... 7 years now, and in the newsposts its mainly been G and T, although they did have Safety Monkey and other post little things. There was more reason for that though, it wasn't like they've ever got Robert Khoo (I hope I've got the name right) posting with something like "Hey guys! I think its cool you like PA, I do business stuff! I also sometimes play X game!!". I can't rightly remember if he has ever posted but if he did it was probably for a decent reason.

So... after the beginning sale Tim is going to be charging 30 dollars a year for 12 four minute shorts. A whopping 48 minutes of animation for 30 dollars?
I'm a CAD reader but at that price tag I might as well look around BT land each month... o.0

I agree with earthworm. His stuff was good. Now everything he pushes out seems pathetically thin, especially the current story arc. And I don't recall any comic turned animation that has been successful with the exception of kids shows (Garfield & Heathcliff). I think CAD is balooning larger than it can sustain. I mean, he's trying to do PA stuff, and he definetly doesn't have the resources. The guy just seems a bit full of himself...
EDIT: And the animated stuff looks like nothing special, but if he can pull all this shit off, then I suppose I underestimated him.

I think this would give Tim a chance to take the storylines that tend to drag after the 8th strip and make them into standalone episodes. The comic can then do more one-off strips.
I liked the look of it though. Good job for the CAD crew.

Well, for myself, CAD as it's one of the comics I enjoy enough to make a habit of visiting on update days. The art isn't bad and the one-off strips tend to be pretty funny. Some of the storyline arcs can get pretty thin though.
That said, it's no PA. Or PVP. Or VG Cats.
If Tim Buckley is a twit, well, as long as he keeps me midly entertained a few times a week I could care less.
As for the animation, I didn't realize that he wants $30/month... or is it just $30 for the animation? I'd possibly check out one or two episodes if they work out well. I wouldn't pay $30 for premium site access though. I'd just donate more to EvAv instead :)

Guild forums for Dark Iron were alight with claims that Tim rips off PA a lot not too long ago, even Kurtz hates him for it and did a comic on it as well as a massive flame war with Tim.
I'd say CAD is like reality TV, you know it's a success but the only reason you can come up with as to why, is that people are idiots. It's not like what you're seeing is good or original, it's annoying and the mere existence of it demeans us all.
One hilarious moment is when he tried to become Jack Thompson's arch nemesis, then PA pulls that charity money thing and in one master stroke it all went to hell.
I must admit, I used to read CAD, during my 20+ webcomics a day phase. Do yourself a favor and go back to last Christmas' stuff, it's the perfact example of why you shouldn't read CAD, at all.
Of course there's Pierre to think about as well, there's a whole other reason to hate CAD.

CAD is definately one of my favorite webcomics and this is definately a reason to celebrate. I mean, its not everyday that they decide to animate a webcomic. Now if they'll just get around to making the Penny-Arcade movie, I'l be happy, hahaha..... No wait... that would just be terrifying....

I really don't know how it found success, I must say that most gaming webcomics confussle me with their success though. I have loved PA for years, and VGcats can be good, but CAD (especially in the last year since like last October), Little gamers, and PvP fail to amuse me 99% of the time. PvP may have been first but in my eyes that doesn't stop it from being horribly bland. (I also find Applegeeks horribly bland).
There are other great webcomics, White Ninja being just incredible, I have often enjoyed the few strips of Machall there have been, and that one that had Scott Ramsoomir (sp) in it for a bit that was about the guy working in customer service or whatever was pretty good, if a little too obvious. I like 8BT but for some reason I've never been able to really get into it and check it on update days.
I do think that maybe PA is just so fantastically awesome, that lots of other web comics seem rather redundant, as they have been done much better before.
I think I had a better point and I think I was going to say more but for some reason I'm drawing a blank, I'm sure you all know what I mean and I hate it so for now I'll finish by saying I'm still waiting for a OMM update. I know its been nearly 4 years since the last but still.

I totally agree. That was just ridiculous from word go. The PA crew unmanned JT so masterfully and they didn't just stand up on their chair and shout "I HATE JACK THOMPSON!"
Now that I think about it, CAD really does try to stay outside of the normal group of webcomics. His whole not-Child's Play charity thing is another example.
Ah well. I'll still read CAD. It will be my reality TV of the webcomic set. At least it's not Userfriendly :)

I'm all for progress in a webcomic--especially towards innovation--but couldn't it be something other than CAD? I really can't stand that comic anymore. His game references are so forced, he has to try so hard to keep it a "gaming comic" to retain his audience.
Case in point, here's one from the beginning of November (http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20051107). "Sorry, I won't be around to play The Warriors today..."; and then "I'll bet Star Wars Galaxies feels a lot like that grapefruit right now...". Note the topical game reference in big bold letters, something Kurtz mocked recently (http://www.pvponline.com/archive.php3?archive=20051129) (insert FotM game here). It just isn't funny anymore. It almost hurts to watch. When PA does a game reference, the whole comic centers around the concept they are referring to, and the comic itself becomes a vessel for their commentary. Case in point (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/11/28).
Now an animated PA or PvP? I'd pay for that.

Ha ha ha. That was great. I've tried, and not been able to, get into Checkerboard Nightmare, but when people link to it, it's great.
So, I'll never shell out money for these, (especially 20-30 dollars a year), but I would have liked to see them otherwise. CAD's story arcs don't thrill me. Whenever he does a specific gag, though, (about a game or current event or anything aside from the story), I think he does a great job.

Saw this on CAD's website.
However, fully animated shorts take a whole team of people, from animators, to directors/producers, to voice actors, all of whom need to be paid. So as much as we'd love to give it away, the bean-counters won't let us.
If you can't afford, or aren't interested in CAD Premium, don't worry. Ctrl+Alt+Del as you've come to know it will remain free. You'll still get everything you've become accustomed to getting (comics, news, reviews, forums, etc).
Changed my perspective a little bit. How about you?

Tolerance has nothing to do with allowing and being allowed to critique something I dont like. Two different things there. Don't worry my Spears campaign has garnered about 50 full fleged Britney haters and counting. I might make shirts one day, but that would only give her more attention. And we wouldnt want that.
I can comment whole-heartidly on anything I please, thats the great thing about a forum. As for thrashing the guy or person who does this unfunny comic, its more to do that the guy has acted like a complete dickhead to others and it has been documented many times. I think the PA guys did many great honorable things that got under his skin, well because he deserved it.
Its one thing to be a successful artist on any medium you use. Its another thing to try and be an honorable person about it. I could careless about what and how he creates his work, its more of his public image that leaves bad tastes in peoples mouths. And yes, that does spill into the work you do as a living.
Hey even PA can be hit or miss, but they got this great saavy and cool way of acting in public and on their own website. I guess this is where the spike divides people who like and dislike ctr+alt+dlt.

What public image is that, if I may ask?
Because I read his newsposts regularly, and if he isn't talking about what's going on with the comics, or discussing a video game, he's often thanking his fans, trying to do things with them, like giving out his Xbox Live name so fans can play video games with him, often supporting good causes and charities.
Or is it that his opinions differ from yours? He doesn't like certain names on RPG's, and maybe you're the type that names their elf "coold00d112", and so he's an asshole because he thinks differently?
Please, explain it to me. I'm curious.

When Battlefield 2 was released he was all gung ho about it and decieded it would be cool to start up a CAD clan for the game. He was going to rent a bunch of servers and then CAD readers would need to pay $5/month to use them and get access to the special BF2 part on his forums.
Well, a bunch of people gave their money and like 1 month into the game on the private servers...they all start shutting down or having service issues. Nobody could manage them except for him. Where was he? Ditched everyone to play WoW (because it was the cool thing to do with PA and PVP) and left them with basically nothing after paying their money.
Point is, the guy is a tool that treats fans of his work like crap.
Then last night when people are saying the pricing is a bit high for the movies, he responds with:
Look, I give you a webcomic for free. That's fine. I do that all by myself, so it's not a huge deal if there are a bunch of freeloaders who don't support the work. I make out just fine.
But an animated series requires a whole team of animators and voice actors that need to get paid.
This isn't something that you had for free, or was promised for free, and suddenly we're slapping a price tag on it. This is above and beyond. It's not for everyone.
You don't need to bitch about it costing money here, because if you don't want to pay for it, it's not for you in the first place.
So cool it, mmk?

Nice try, attempting to take that out of context. But in that thread people weren't just "mentioning" that they thought the price was a "bit" too high. They were flat out insulting people who were signing up, and calling them retards. And there was a wink at the end of it that you probably intentionally left out, because it conveyed the calm and straightforward manner of the post.
And I played BF2 with Absath and the rest of the CAD gang, and as he posted in the BF2 forum, people only paid up enough for one month worth of servers. He didn't continue taking money for them after he moved over to WoW (which he was back into, by the way, months before PA/PVP started their thing), and he left them up for a month longer, out of his own pocket. I'd link the post he made, but the BF2 forum hasn't been around for a while. But it was up there when people were asking about it.

Exactly, they respect their fans.
Tycho, or maybe it was Gabe, I forget; wrote a post maybe a year back talking about how much they appreciate their fans and how they would be stuck in some dead end job, not doing what they love, if not for them. I like Penny Arcade, they have their ups and downs, but overall they make an entertaining strip.
After reading this news post, and some of the comments, I thought I would go back and read the Ctrl+Alt+Del archives for the hell of it. What I don't enjoy is the ongoing stories. That's why I like Penny Arcade; most of their comics are stand-alone. I get so bored with CAD because of the weeks of the same crap being recycled. Sometimes the comics look the same for days, with just new dialogue. That's boring for me, especially when the dialogue goes nowhere.
The whole Xbot going nuts was a month-long endeavor and I lost interest and haven't returned since. (except for now, and I realize I don't miss anything). I never really was able to get into it, though. I tried but never succeeded.
VG Cats is a far superior webcomic and is just plain hilarious. I think it's better than Penny Arcade sometimes. And I love Scott's artwork.

I wouldn't give a shit about CAD, as it really is just another horrible gaming webcomic that never even got good enough to jump a shark. Only I can't ignore them, I deal with the ganking Rapscallion assholes on Dark Iron everyday.
Also, talent is not opinion, liking something is opinion, I don't like most racing games, but the good ones I've played have been excellent. I still didn't like them, but I knew the quality was there and it was time well spent. CAD I can't stand because it's utterly awful and Tim takes himself far too seriously.
Also I've just come back from a huge blackout, so good thing Earthworm PMed me :p

Kurtz runs a business as well these days, yet he can still somehow remain in the vicinity of Earth (if only just).
