PC gamers and Epic Games were caught by surprise when Gears of War rolled over and played dead after the game's digital certificate expired on January 28th. GameSpot has the story (http://www.gamespot.com/news/blogs/sidebar/909182374/26763641/gears-of-war-pc-crashes-on-certificate-expiration.html?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6203901).

The issue stems from the fact that as of January 28, Gears of War's digital certificate is expired. Those who attempt to play the game after that time will be prompted with the aforementioned error message, and a number of forum posters claimed that they were exited out of the game when the clock flipped over to a new day.

The good news is that Epic Games is aware of the problem and is currently working with Microsoft on a fix. "We have been notified of the issue and are working with Microsoft to get it resolved," an Epic Games community manager said in a post on the company's forums (http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=656177&page=3). "This was a surprise to us too. We aren't casting blame or chewing anyone out. We're trying to figure out how and why it happened so we can get it fixed."

I own Gears of War on PC and 360, it's nice getting 2000 points for 1 game. 1 on my couch, 1 in my office with advanced graphics.

Seriosly - the full price game you have bought is time limited?

Yes, all games with DRM like this is time limited. When the company that made them go bankrupt/shut down/disappears into the night... your game(s) will most likely be unplayable. That is the reason for the DRM outcry. We don't wan't to pay for games we are not sure how long we can play. I actually still play my old games...

They'd better fix this quickly. Luckily I live in a country where the law supports you on giving back dysfunctional products. So I'll give it back if they don't fix it soon.

Actually, this is a big thing. I didn't buy it as a time-limited product. Whether any certificate expires next year or shortly before the sun explodes does not matter.

This is exactly the issue I have with steam. It could stop functioning anytime. I just didn't expect it from GoW.

If I buy a TV and it's not working because the fuckers who produced it remotely shut it off, I get pretty god damn upset. I don't care if they told me "hey man calm down, we are fixing it!". They have no right to turn off the functionalities in my products, and if they believe otherwise I will not do business with them.

Heh, I bet the pirate copies aren't affected. And they wonder why people steal the shit.

DRM is so wonderful.

And yet publishers still have the audacity to claim that DRM is about piracy.

Shameless.

You are only licensing the use of their software... I'm sure the EULA that you agreed to when you installed the game gives them the right to turn it off remotely whenever they want.

It wouldn't be America if someone wasn't standing up for the right of corporations to take advantage of consumers via legal word-games.

Why the fuck would they even have a time limited DRM setup? What the hell is the point of that?
