For all of you that are still playing the superly awesome Unreal Tournament 3, we've got some hot scoops for you! Coming by way of BluesNews (http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewstory&threadid=95112), BeyondUnreal (http://www.beyondunreal.com/view_story.php?id=12466) has posted a pretty sizable changelog for the next patch. In case you were wondering, URT3 hasn't been patched in over a year. Read on for some of the enhancements highlighted, or just click the BeyondUnreal (http://www.beyondunreal.com/view_story.php?id=12466) link for the current changelog.
BeyondUnreal has details on what's described as a major update that's in the works for Unreal Tournament 3, and the length of the change list they've posted is indeed pretty major. No indication is offered as to when this patch will go live, but the post is headed up by an intriguing note that says the patch is "a very small part" of what Epic has in store, though there is nothing to give away what they are hinting about. The patch will include enhancements to the server browser, a UI overhaul, significant AI improvements, client-side demo recording, improved network performance, improved Steam integration (including Steam achievements), improved mod support, and more.
Seriously though, is anyone actually playing URT3 still?

Was so excited for UT3 when it came out... had been a long time UT player but upon playing the full version I was significantly underwhelmed.

They really botched this game, took out a lot of the charm really. The UI and matchmaking system was the most horrendous thing I ever saw, and it really turned me off to the game by itself. I could not believe that Epic had screwed over the PC market as bad as they did, but we all know it is the fault of GoW. Gotta love Cliffy and Mark for selling out the PC.

How is it the fault of GoW?

I would like the answer to that question myself. I would have blamed the Playstation 3. :p

Boy, I wonder. Unreal 3 backend was built for optimization for their 360 baby Gears of War, then they wanted to purge out a consolized Unreal Tournament 3 a short time later. Look at Epic's track record up until GoW, they were always a very refined studio definitely amongst the best out there.
Truth is, back in the day they knew what PC gamers would enjoy and they delivered. They knew how to design a solid UI, fun gametypes, and how to build a good multiplayer backend. Unreal Tournament 3 was a joke to the series though in terms of everything that took a big step back. Sure, it had the old school feel, but it was so obvious that consoles had the biggest influence over the title, and that was all thanks to the shift to the consoles.
Once in awhile I wish that GoW had flopped so Epic would have stuck to what they were best at.
I think EPIC's decline on the pc could be dated by that unreal 2.5 tournament close quarters fighting game they did for Microsoft. Thing is, I'd have liked that game on the pc, but it's definitely when EPIC's attention to the pc waned.

"Is anyone playing UT3 still?" Why the fuck not? People still play StarCraft, of all things. Why ask such a stupid question?

Why are you so dumb and socially incompetent that you don't understand a figure of speech?

I agree with Electro. UT3 wasn't a bad game but it was clearly designed with the console in mind, and it's a shame that Epic basically gave the finger to the PC fanbase that helped build its studio and make Gears of War possible. UT3 felt like a dumbed-down version of UT2004, with a console-friendly interface and console-centric control scheme.
Not to mention, it wholly underdelivered what was promised and what the long development time called for. Remember the new battle mode they said would be like a real war with the terrain shifting based on who controlled certain points? We got Onslaught with orbs.

sweet as
no one plays it
but you dont need many people when you got bots
I thought UT3 was pretty good and I didn't notice much change from the previous games. But then I didn't play the other games a lot either. Plus this one got tripods and hoverboards which are awesome.
I bought the complete series on Steam last year for next to nothing when the dollar was really low, so I can't omplain anyway.

Still don't get all the "hate" for this game. It is actually pretty good fun, and it runs great on a PC.

Yes it does and on a good system it looks great. I still find myself playing UT2004 for the maps since UT3 just seemed to have, in my opinion, small maps...which is probably so that they'll fit into console memory. I think I'll have to re-install this one after I download and play the new Fallout3 DLC that is.

I don't get it. What part of Mozgus' question is a figure of speech? I mean something like "Is this the patch that adds the fun?" I would get your criticism.
They went back to the UT99 design, and I loved it !
Too bad that the new kiddie generation did not.
UT3 is also an engine selling tool for Epic.
When you buy it, you recieved alot of engine documentation, and can hook the engine into Visual Studio for development.
I'm studying game-design, and for this semester we have to buy UT3 (cheap right now) and use the UT3 engine.

I still fire it up every once in a while for a quick bot match. I don't understand all the hatred towards this game.
Sure, it's pretty much more-of-the-same and extremely focused on old-school shooting, but what it does it does really well. Epic still has the best bots in the industry, the game looks and runs great. It is what it is.

It's simple... they evolved from UT to UT2003, then took the series to an even better level in UT2004. Then things went silent.
UT3 hit the scene with the sloppy UI, bad matchmaking, bad maps, etc. and with a fraction of the game types that many had come to love. It was so apparent that consoles were the primarily platform that it wasn't even funny. I'd rather play any of the other three versions on the PC any day of the week.

Yet another game I own across both PC and Xbox 360 and never have time to play. It doesn't help that they took out the best part of the game (the incredible dark industrial music) from the previous 2 UT games.

You haven't listened to all the music then. There's like 5 very well done remixes from the original UT, as well as a ton of set-piece tracks very reminiscent of 2K4.

Thanks for letting me know.... I actually wasn't aware UT3 had ANY music at all. Maybe I have not played it enough.

I still play Warfare and VCTF online every once and a while. Hoping the patch brings more players/servers, often there is no one playing online and not too many low ping servers.

oh yeah, why is there no directx10/AA support in the patch, it was promised before the game come out.

I gotta say - that's a better explanation than what I thought I would have heard. Can't really say I disagree... and while I used to find CliffyB charming... he's really just annoying anymore.
I still think UT99 was the best of the series.
BloodyBlocks ftw.
