First of all, as you probably know, the acronym stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Game. It’s actually the natural evolution of the Multiplayer concept, considering the fact that the Internet has gained such a momentum nowadays. Lots of people praise these games (especially their producers, of course) but, in the same time, many people think of them as a drug, potentially one of the most dangerous drugs of the 21’st century.
I’ll speak about the addiction problem a bit later. Now, let’s take a short trip back in time, so that we can see the origins of this phenomenon.

Alright that was horrible. Seriously anti-gaming advocates have a better grasp on games than this guy.

Are MMOGs the future of mankind…are they…the Matrix?
Are you for real?
This is one of the worst articles I've read in months. And not just because you achieve no actual results, no actual purpose of writing the article. But because there is no balance involved here. You use sterotypes to create an image of a gamer and then implicitly say this is bad. Would you like more straw for the litte man your building?

So, it’s no wonder that many people think of these games as a future drug. Think of the several cases of people dying of exhaustion while playing World of Warcraft for days in a row, without getting any sleep. They fit exactly the profile of the hardcore MMOG gamer.
No, they they fit the profile of hardcore gold farmers.

You forgot subspace (now known as continuum). Still the online designer crack for those who have the patience to get past the multiple month learning curve :D

So, to sum up:
MMOG's have been arond since the late 80s
Most popular MMOG's are fantasy based
Players are vain
MMOGs have been reported to be addictive
The End
That editorial was completely without substance. There was little to no information provided to back up any of the (few) points made. As I was reading it I kept thinking "Ok, lets get past this intro and into the meat of the article" and then it just ended. In was, in effect, just a brief summary of a few characteristics of an MMOG.
Sorry guy, good effort, but try again.

Then you must be on crack, because for the past ten years they have been MMO's, MMOG's, or MMORPG's (MMOFPS, MMORTS.. etc)

The content was a bit light in the editorial, but this is still an interesting topic. I'd like to see some cases or stories related by addicted gamers and some actual medical research.
