MCV has word (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/32961/Eidos-on-verge-of-buyout) that Eidos is in the early stages of discussions with an unknown firm that is looking to acquire the troubled publisher.

Eidos has confirmed that it is in early talks for a potential acquisition of the publisher.

The confirmation comes off the back of a share price jump for the Britsoft firm, which owns the Tomb Raider and Hitman IPs and a number of studios around the world.

"The Board can announce that it has received a preliminary approach which may or may not lead to an offer being made for the Company," a statement from the publisher said.

What does this have to do with them complaining about Tomb Raiders sales?

Probably wanted to show more profits in order to sell at a higher price.
Or stave off the purchase.

Pfft SCi was doing pretty well before they bought and changed to Eidos. It's cursed!

If I was a buyer, and I'm probably another game company, I'd buy it, strip the licenses, keep the studios and ditch the moniker of the fallen quick sharp.

It is a buyers market! Outside another consolidation it is tough to see how this could be that bad. I mean what is the buyer going to do? They can't really do any more damage to their best franchise or dev studios than Eidos has already done.

Since Eidos has pretty much shown that they are better at destroying great game studios/teams and steller IPs than creating them I won't miss them much.

That'd buy them the Batman license. Maybe they could finish the open-world Batman game as well as release Arkham Asylum. The latter would probably still come out far better than the former but I really would like to drop off a building as the hero who does it best.

Can they afford it though?

I could see somebody buying Eidos and killing the name.

I figure there are 4 companies who could afford to buy up those dev houses and Eidos IP's.

EA - It they do it, you can expect Hitman to go away. They'd probably keep it as a Tomb Raider only devision.

Activision - Most Likely the same thing, except you would see Lara as a Guitar Hero DLC character.

MS - could afford it, but seem to be divesting themselves of dev houses.

Ubisoft - Best for gamers. You would see them combing the IP's with their existing dev houses. So the next Tomb Raider would probably be built on the POP engine. Crystal Dynamix would be freed to do another game, Probably Remake Pandemonium.
Hitman would still exist, and they would probably keep the dev house responsible for it open.

Although, I think LOK is dead as a doornail no matter who takes over. :(
