View Full Version : Jerry "Tycho" Holkins of Penny-Arcade Has a Baby

Or... That bastard (tycho@penny-arcade.com) from Penny-Arcade (http://penny-arcade.com/) makes me cry.

They handed him to me, eventually. Not first, now - that's not done. The physchological weight of him nearly shattered my legs. This must have been how Ultra Magnus felt, I thought, when Optimus Prime gave him the Matrix of Leadership.

I'm kidding.

I very nearly buckled. Not struck dumb, but struck, as a string might be struck, into sound:

It's me, I said. I'm the one who sang to you.
Not exactly huge gaming news, but I know many of us follow Penny-Arcade closely, and Tycho sure does have a way with words.

Congratulations to Jerry and mommy! And welcome to the world, Elliot Jacob Holkins.

Why he wasn't called 360 or some other variant I'll never know.

Congrats Tycho! You should start a poll to see what to name your child, just like Evil did! Sure it won't be nearly as original now, but its still cool!

Edit: I hadn't seen that you had named your child yet. Oh well, if Gabe ever has a child maybe we will have a shot at that. :)

Congrats Jerry. I stopped reading the posts a long time ago because of school and stuff, and I actually lost my 5 month backed up set of posts when the site changed. I figured he was having a baby with the whole "cold placenta sandwiches" though I wasn' sure becuase I hadn't read the posts. But that is just awesome news. Congrats man, and a great metaphor!

That is not the point. I agree with what you are saying as I find the culture of celebrity as disgusting and bizarre as anyone else. The issue here is the asshole manner in which Chagrinful chose to word his point of view. That shit is unnacceptable regardless of whose baby we are talking about.

Well the point is, Tycho posted this on HIS OWN SITE which is where its actually relevant as he owns the site and his loyal readers are all there and such, some guy posting it on THIS site is just posting about some shmuck having a kid as necros said 55000 babies are born a day. I'm not very eloquent with my wording, fuck that shit, say it as it is. Lets announce every baby born every minute of every day. A baby being born isn't an amazing thing by any means by anyone outside the related party, and it SHOULDN"T BE, OMG he knows how to fuck!!!! :O w00t for him!

Funn you say that, I had CNN on, and they were talking about the "Blogosphere." I personally love Tycho's writing, but having a panel to discuss the "Blogosphere" is pathetic.

Let's see. Penny Arcade read this site, and actually links here on occassion. That's how I discovered it. I remember Tycho was relieved when the site came back up a few years ago.

The point is, maybe some assholes are a bit too immature to hang out even at Evilavatar.com Maybe when their jealous asses come up with something as fun and creative as Penny-Arcade they can get their accomplishments posted on the front page too. Until such time, maybe they should just shut the fuck up.

And I find it refreshing when someone doesn't dumb down everything he writes in order to make it acceptable to fuckwits with the vocabulary of a four-year-old. To each his own, head over and read Little Gamers or something, and I'll continue to enjoy PA, and Tycho's newsposts, which I actually enjoy more than the comic most days.

Incidentally, while the opinion that this shouldn't be front page news is perfectly valid (and an opinion I share - the people who care are also the people who already read the post on Tycho's own site), being a stupid fuckstick about it is unnecessary.

The neat thing about picking up a dictionary to learn a word is that once you learn it, you no longer need the dictionary in order to understand it. With luck, you may be able to use that word yourself some day. The more you do this, the more words you understand, and the less likely it is that you appear like a fool in front of total strangers when you don't know a word that everyone else does.

Some of you really need to learn to chill out. Don't like the article? Don't read it. It's not like anyone is forcing you to. Don't like Penny Arcade? Then go ahead and say so, only try to do it without resorting to immature insults and meaningless comments that have no relevance to the topic at hand. Making fun of the guy's brand-new spanking kid probably won't get your point across. Seriously, no one said you can't express yourself but try and do so with a little respect for yourselves. Some of you are down right sad.

When you use that sort of vernacular abuse in your personal expression you not only make your opinion worthless, but you lose any possibility of someone taking you seriously. If you don't like them, inform others why you don't and be intelligent about it. Let others with an opposite opinion explain why they DO like them. Maybe both parties will learn something.

I almost forgot, congrats Jerry (and the wife). Everyone over at WDC (www.officialwdc.com) wishes Elliot a warm welcome! Get that kid teething on the xbox pronto!

I don't think we're celebrating, just giving congratulations. Plus, it just so happens that the guy that had the baby is a fairly popular figure in the gaming community. Shit, if one of us just had our first child, and we decided to post the news on the message boards, then I'm willing to bet that the other people here would congratulate us. Sure, it wouldn't be front page news, but like I said, we're not all running popular gaming sites. Plus, CNN and the New York Times think crap like the Brad and Angelina fiasco is front page news. Get used to it; the people in this country would rather be entertained, then properly informed.

Heartfelt congratulations to Jerry and his lovely wife.

I think this merrits a newspost because PA and EvAv have always had a bit of mutual respect, and mutual linkage. While I do think that things got a bit out of hand a while ago, with rampant PA linking on this site, it's under control now, and I don't see anything wrong with giving this one a go. We had a newspost when Wicked Wilson died, and I don't see this as any different. PA is a friend of the site, and this is big news.

Congrats again to the new father! I couldn't even imagine taking on that responsibility. I get nervous if a GF wants to stay over two nights in a row. =P

Awesome, congratulations!

As for the bickering, I think it's relevant since many of the posters here at evil avatar have come here through Tycho's links, and so a lot of us read what he has to say which is usually very well though out and intresting. Just as any other figure in the gaming culture, I would be intrested if he had a baby. If Warren Spectre had a baby, please tell me. If Peter Molyneux made out with that Starcraft guy in those goofy cloud videos, I'd want to know, please post it.

However it's really unneccesarry to troll the board, especially when it's something you can easily just not click on. I mean, there's even a disclaimer that says this is not game news!

Aside from that, I love Penny Arcade, but I hate the fact that Tycho uses words to create sentances, and through those sentances paragraphs which make up ideas. And if there's one thing I hate more than words, it's ideas...

Some people obviously have an ax to grind and choose to grind it by debasing an otherwise friendly and celebratory piece of news. To remove or clean up their posts would only serve to infuriate them further and lead to claims of censoring or pandering, which is less than ideal.

And for anyone interested - I approved the post because I thought it worthy of inclusion in the News section. Whether or not you like Penny-Arcade, the fact that a new gamer has been born is newsworthy. :)

Thanks to everyone who defended my post for me. As I said, it's not exactly the biggest gaming, but many people seemed grateful for the news, and only a few cockballs somehow found a way to be offended by it. 55,000 babies may be born everyday, but not too many of their fathers are personalities we know who write an article that I thoroughly enjoyed reading about it.

Anyway, I could go on and on, but most people have already made the points I would.

Congrats to Tycho for bringing another gamer into this world. I look forward to the contribution he will bring to comments on gaming websites in the form of literacy. (in contrast to the two detractors here.) ;)

I had read it already on Penny Arcade, but was still happy to see the post here and the comments that it generates (which, for the most part, are more literate than you will find on your average gaming website.) And hey, I didn't consider it news, I could have just skipped over it. I wouldn't feel the urge to sue for unnecessary bandwidth charged or anything. :p

I'll answer the "Who Cares?" question.

I do and it is my page.

If you don't care, good for you. If you don't care and you want to say you don't care, then I'm good with that too.

If you don't care and you want to throw a tantrum and start throwing around profanity and bad mouthing people whose freaking banner is running at the top of the page - you might want to consider finding yourself some other place to express your frustration, since I would hope it is obvious that I don't want to read it here.

It was a slow news day and a good post and I approve. (And it seems pretty on-topic given the love we get from Penny-Arcade.)

I'd be more excited to read that he lost some brain function and can now only make posts readable by the common man on his site. As it stands now each one of his posts makes me cringe. Ugh.

Clearly that's because you're an idiot. You're like the 24 year old who still can't do basic math, but instead of buying some fucking flash cards, just whines about how math shouldn't be important.

I say, congratulations to Jerry. We're expecting a baby soon ourselves, and the things he wrote really hit home for us (yes, my wife reads the occasional odd Penny Arcade post too - because, like me, she loves Tycho's writing).

Let's see. Penny Arcade read this site, and actually links here on occassion. That's how I discovered it. I remember Tycho was relieved when the site came back up a few years ago.

Bingo.

That's how I started reading it too.

Dear Tycho and Wife,

Please enjoy this congratulatory card from Evil Avatar. We wish you and your newborn son the best.

P.S. - Please ignore the assholes who scribbled "Fuk U!" all over it in crayon.

-----------------------------

Btw, if you haven't already done so, a nice way to congratulate Tycho and to do a good thing for the holiday season would be to contribute to the Child's Play charity they created a couple of years ago (and which has subsequently grown and grown). The charity supplies hospitals with toys for children. . . most notably video games. You can order products through Amazon for a hospital nearest to you, or simply give a money donation.

Evil is currently hosting a banner for this charity at the top of the page, so you can click there to go to the website, but if this post gets old and you still need the link. The url is http://www.childsplaycharity.org/

I've got to stop reading the comments section.

I read the post about the baby and I smile.

For some GODDAMN reason, I click on the comments section, read some of the posts by stupid fucking trolls, and lose a little more faith in humanity.

uh oh, 4 syllables. here necros:

hu·man·i·ty (hyū-măn'ĭ-tē) pronunciation
n., pl. -ties.

1. Humans considered as a group; the human race.
2. The condition or quality of being human.
3. The quality of being humane; benevolence.

As a gamer who's expecting his second child soon, I empathize with Jerry.

Those of you who haven't yet helped bring life into the world won't understand until you're holding your newborn child's hand in yours begging them to wake up (http://uberjumper.hwcommunity.com/linnae.shtml).

I can't wait to see how being a father changes Jerry's life.

Congrats UberJumper. I'm just recently married, and so it'll probably be another year or so before we have our first. I can only imagine the terror you must have been in while you didn't know if the baby was going to be ok or not. I'm happy that everything went well, though. Good luck with the next!

TheKeck, it's amazing/scary/exciting/fun all at the same time. As someone else said "Everything you didn't know you needed".

When your 22 month old daughter is sitting in your lap while you're playing Battlefield 2, and she yells "TANK!" when she sees it come around the corner, it's just awesome. They're like little sponges, they absorb everything, and spew it all back out at you. Randomly at first, and then, suddenly, they're asking for things, telling you how they feel, asking for hugs, and generally turning into little people. Soon you realize that how you treat them is how they will treat others. You see that the responsibility of your influence over them is something not to be taken lightly (I think "bad parents" don't get that bit).

E-penis in effect here. Post count has any sort of relevance. Ever think I've been reading this site since it was an Ultima Online fansite? But please, keep flexing that virtual penis.

Wait...

Do you mean to imply that after all these thousands of news posts and related threads, this is the one that forces your hand to write?

Sir, I lol in your general direction.

Tell me about it. My wife and I never really realized how often we said, 'There you go' until our 14-month old son (now 17 months) started saying it while holding things out to us.

The funniest thing about my little guy is that he doesn't tend to watch typical kid's shows. I've been indoctorinating him with Discovery channel science shows and TLC specials about train wrecks since he was 6 months old and tossing in the occasional anime to further wreck his brain.

I realized that I may have taken it a bit too far while I was watching The West Wing on DVD. Every time the opening credits would roll, without fail, he'd stop whatever he was doing (usually something involving tearing apart my kitchen cupboards) and would run over, stand in front of the TV and do the cutest little hip-wiggle dance. Once the music stopped, he'd go back to whatever he was doing.

One day he shall be a dancing politician. If that day comes to pass, I'll know why!

Is this the part where we post "Isn't that so cute." stories?

My little Ivy is only 12 months old, but one thing she does that I just love is she gives "backwards" hugs. She likes to walk up to you, turn around and back into you so you can rub her belly instead of her back.

EA is a parenting site now?

Okay.
Sierra is three now. I'm worried - she can't really work out console controllers. She loves mouse-driven games, though we don't let her see the violent ones anymore (or the swearing ones. As noted above: sponge.)

She named her pet duck Ducktor Doom, which impresses me.

I guess we're trying to offset the giant dose of negativity from the beginning of the thread with these 'Aw, shucks' stores at the tail end of it. It's like a teeter-totter of happiness.

To keep it game related, I did mention before that I named my son after the main character of the Thief games, didn't I? Good ol' Garrett. Suffice it to say, his grandma and his mother weren't happy when I told them the reason I'd pushed for the name (about 3 months after he was born).

Of course, by that time Garrett had stuck and there was no going back. My wife has forbidden me from telling people that I named him after a videogame character though.

EpicOfTyler:

Thanks, but how cute is this (http://uberjumper.hwcommunity.com/gallery/Linnae/DSC01504)? She pulls the pin with her teeth, drops the grenade on the couch from behind it, ducks, and goes "BOOM". She also yells "WOLVERINES!" and can say "N00b".

Spigot:

My daughter's been dancing to the Stargate credit music for about a year now, it's the gosh darn cutest thing EVAR. I can point out the stargate to her, and she knows what it is. "STARGATE!"

Evil:

Linnae, when picked up and held to a shoulder face first will pat our backs just like we pat her. Also, when she was first learning how to give family a kiss goodbye, she'd bend in and offer her forehead for a kiss.

I remember seeing a post on Penny-arcade with Mike's kid playing with a video game controller. Couple days later, Linnae was sitting in her chair trying to figure out my PS/2 controller. When we have gaming days, we give her a controller so she doesn't feel left out.
