Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21848) has some neat little news today. Classic text-based RPG Zork will be making its return as a browser based MMO called Legends of Zork.
Legends of Zork casts the player as a newly-unemployed traveling salesman ready for treasure-hunting and adventure in the Great Underground Empire, faced with the sacking of the Royal Treasury, layoffs at FrobozzCo International, and marauding kobolds and trolls clashing with explorers over loot.
Jolt says players will be able to access the persistent adventure from any Internet browser via LegendsofZork.com with no need for download, and says the game is "designed to provide gamers with a casual MMO game they can play on their laptop, desktop or Apple iPhone (in school, work or on the bus)."
"As a complete Zork geek, I’m very proud to be releasing this title," says Jolt Online CEO Dylan Collins. "Anyone who plays MMOs will definitely like to spend some time with Legends of Zork while they’re taking a break or browsing around the web. It’s very addictive."
If done right, I'm so down.
Thanks ruumis!

Sounds intriguing. My favorite in the series was actually Zork Zero.

I have a really cool idea, we could brand this entire genre and call it a Multi-User Dungeon ... or MUD for short.

Will it be a text based MMO?
Um Kinda like a MUD actually.
Can I be a Grue?

I will only play this if it leads to a MMO based on Leather Goddesses of Phobos.

Not content to merely reinvent old ideas each generation, MMO genealogy has finally become a proper ouroboros.

Sounds intriguing. My favorite in the series was actually Zork Zero.I liked Zork Zero: The Revenge of Megaboz too. It was a cool prequel to the original trilogy. I remember it came out quite a while after Zork III. My uncle had turned me on to the originals a few years before.
Long live the Infocom parser! :D

I don't know about you guys, but I really miss the old Sierra graphical text adventure games (prior to when they became point-and-click-find-the-pixel-titles). Police Quest 2, Hero's Quest, and Space Quest 3: The Pirates of Pestulon, were probably my favs.

Zork was where you had to get the lamp at the start, and if you didn't you'd make it to a point in the game where you needed it and couldn't go back, then you'd ram your head through the monitor right?

There should be a mandatory question prior to signing up.
"It is dark... what are you likely to be eaten by?"
If you can't answer you can't play. Begone gamer babies! :D

I only played Space Quest III, but wow, what a game. I also like the old Cinemaware game, The Krystal. Also in that genre.
This thread really separates the men from the children. :p

LOL! Basically, yes. Unfortunately, I didn't discover the wonders of graph paper mapping until Bard's Tale II. I was too young when playing Zork to realize that if I actually made my own map, I'd get somewhere. I think I always got stuck somewhere in the first cavern. I think I finished Zork Zero a bit later on though.
But folks.... the BEST game in this genre, IMHO, was Arthur, The Quest for Excalibur! I actually saw a copy of my Amiga version at PAX08 and almost bought it on pure nostalgia alone! If I still had an Amiga I would have, but I don't have the room in my new place. If I ever become filthy rich, I am dedicating a room to the Amiga 500 and hunting down every game ever made for it. The emulators just don't cut it, because they don't work fluidly.

I would have replied earlier, but my wife just emailed me that she has never played Zork. So, that started up all that messy divorce filing paperwork. :p
I am so up for this idea. I loved Zork and all the other Infocom games. I wonder how well those hold up now though.
I tried the Sierra games again a few years ago, and I can say they didn't age well! That whole 2D with some mock 3D movement was a pain, plus the speed of movement drove me nuts.

Terribly sorry to hear that but I think you are making the right decision given the circumstances. :P

For me the biggest issue with those games was the instant death mechanic they put in which effectively punished you for exploring the environment and the parser capabilities. Flushing the toilet in LSL anyone?
