Playstation: The Official Magazine, US edition, has been the first to award Sony's high-profile sequel a perfect score. From Metacritic. (http://www.metacritic.com)

It's true that Killzone 2 is filled with moments that can handily be described as inspiring awe. Each scene is incredibly well detailed, from the gaps in jerry-rigged cover points letting you sneak in a killing headshot to scarred and scratched textures, the planet feels entirely believeable... Without a doubt Killzone fans, action and shooter fans of any stripe will instantly tag this sequel as a powerful contender for best game of 2009.

The lofty comments come from a magazine which awarded the original with a fair-ish 8 out of 10 whilst in a slightly different guise. This suggests that there wasn't too much bias involved but it'd be fair to suggest some pressure would be put on them for a good score.

However, the game has received excellent previews strongly suggesting it's going to be one of the best shooters of 2009. One can at least assume that it deserves the majority of it's score points. Keep an eye out on the page (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/killzone2) to see how it goes.

Excited? I most certainly am.

Thank F. It really did need to be good for the developers and the system but a little to early to be calling it game of the year.

ironically, the official playstation magazine is known for being harder on its games than most non sony affiliated sources, so i'll take their word on it. i expect high 9s and a few 10s.

guess there's finally something on ps3 worth buying.

Interesting. Wonder if it will unseat GoW2 as the top shooter.

Also interested to see how many copies it sells, seeing as how it is exclusive.

Lets see if other more "neutral" sources gives the game the same score. There's a big chance they will :)

All reviews on games with multiplayer are done before the game releases. The developers do have the network up for reviewers to play on pre release.

And big surprise, a highly anticipated game getting a perfect score? Clearly this is not your average well-financed review score! (I call bullshit. No game is a perfect 10. Ever.)

I have no problem with games getting perfect tens because I think some games deserve it. Goldeneye for instance.

But, seriously, a perfect 10 for an FPS? NOW?

I would have MAYBE given Halo 1 a perfect 10, and it redefined the genre in at least 5 meaningful ways (Integrating solid vehicle and on-foot combat for the first time, the recharging shield mechanic, the two weapon mechanic, re-establishing co-op as a feature, first FPS to have solid networked combat, etc.)

Killzone has to redefine at LEAST that many elements of the FPS to get a perfect ten from me.

Well, at least now that opm gave them a 10 now they can have snazzy commericals with the perfect 10 from one reviewer pasted all over the place.

Reviews are near on meaningless to me, hell GTA4 got a perfect 10, and hells no. I just wait till I hear more from the different people in here and other places.
Reviews are mainly for fanboys nowadays.

Yes...I agree on GTA4. I still dont know what was so different from the previous titles that made it ground breaking. I still got bored like I did before.

I also agree with the earlier post about a sequel to Killzone:Liberation. I just finished it and it was great. Lets get another.

Anyway. One thing I've always wondered, is, are there any reviewers that give number/star/happy unicorn emoticon scores test for things like widespread multiplayer and replay values? It's something that's left out of a lot of reviews. There are a lot of excellent games that you'll play only once, but I think there's something to be said about games that are really damn good that you'll play multiple times. I wish they'd make these things part of a secondary or tertiary baseline score for the game, so you can go, 'Oh, okay, it's kickass for the 12-hour singleplayer, pretty fun for about 10 hours multiplayer, and you can breeze through singleplayer again a couple of times and only get 10 minutes of new or interesting content.'. Are there any online sites that do that sort of thing regularly?

I'm surprised that so many people seem to think this game won't be deserving of the score. There's been nothing but positive things said about it since the E3 trailer thing blew over. Heck, it even stands up to that trailer pretty fucking well.

As I've said, previews have been super positive.

I have no idea whether this review is accurate or not, but I will say this: Previews are advertising. Period. It is in their very DNA to be positive, and they can be discounted on that basis (and are, by myself at least).

YMMV on that opinion, of course.

This game would be an excellent opportunity to take the overly ornate doily off the top of my PS3, and give my overworked 360 a well deserved rest. Initial official reviews seem irrelevant at first glance but there's reason for optimism.

Integrating solid vehicle and on-foot combat for the first time, the recharging shield mechanic, the two weapon mechanic, re-establishing co-op as a feature, first FPS to have solid networked combat, etc.

Tribes 2 did all of these first, except for the co-op (since it didn't have a real campaign) and assuming that you don't regard a two-weapon limit as qualitatively different from a 3/4/5 limit. Saying that "re-establishing" an old feature "redefined the genre" is some mega spin anyway.

Incidentally Tribes 2 is alive again, and it's free, and it's still the best online FPS ever made. (http://tribesnext.com)

I find it laughable that because its the "official" playstation magazine, people think they are owned by Sony or something. Its actually a part of Future Inc., a company that also makes the Official Xbox Magazine and Nintendo Power (the official nintendo magazine).

Perhaps the more legitimate rationale for believing that this is a disingenuous review is that perhaps payed the editors off in secret? That seems highly likely as all major publishers do that. I believe EGM editor Dan Hsu wrote an article about that a while back.

So is it possible Sony gave everyone at PSM a fat check? Yes, but where is the evidence? The seemingly improbable assignment of perfect quality to game? or the fact that the magazine has the words "official" and playstation both in the title. Both are moot to the fact that they have provided a well legitimized review of their experience and covering all the bases of what their criteria of a "good" game is. To also provide a supposition of bias, especially considering PSM has been unfriendly towards supposed AAA Playstation game like Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and graciously giving them all 8 and Lair a 5, is unfounded. I would say that their critiques are strongly legitimized and lack monetary sway. They deserve a lot more respect than some of the people of this thread gives them.

Personal opinion is fine, and so is skepticism. Play Magazine gave Lair a 9/10 and that was one of the first reviews. We all know how well that turned out. Please found those presuppositions upon something more than personal bias.

I'm sorry, but tis is just NOT an argument. I'm sick of hearing about colors. Some games are SUPPOSED to look that way. You expect a lot of greens and blues in a game of this nature? So it being gray negates the fact the graphics are great??? Seriously, this is just a worn-out troll "argument."

Yea, that argument simply doesn't hold water. As long as the colors fit the tone and setting of the game it doesn't matter how many shades of gray they use.

You clearly are looking for drama. You are some kind of egotistical person; report me to the mods for simply questioning your typical half-assed arguments? Give me a fucking break. I really hope Killzone 2 will be great. I really didn't like the first game but saw what it could've been. There was a lot of potential there wasted on poor design, poor balancing and simply not enough play testing. I never did bothered finishing it.
I've been getting more and more excited about Killzone 2, but some things i've been hearing about give me pause, such as the only able to carry one main weapon (along with a pistol, grenades and knife). I like more variety in my weapon choices and being forced to drop my rifle for a rocket launcher to just take out a tank or boss sounds counter intuitive.

They just gotta have something to complain about. First it was whining about how Halo was all shiny and colourful, then it's the likes of Gears of War and the "Next Gen Brown" bullshit. You can never please those kind of tossers. Killzone 2 looks beautiful.

I... Halo. One. A perfect ten. Redefin.... Jesus Christ.

Oh GET over yourself. I'm so sick of hearing these holier than thou people slag off Halo. I come from a background of PC gaming, i always prefer FPS games on PC, my favourite FPS is the Half Life series (can't wait for Black Mesa Source), i loved Deus Ex and hated Invisible War, but i can say without stutter that Halo 1 was a superb game, and like it or not it DID redefine FPS games (and not just on consoles) due to how so many other games imitated it.

Perfect 10 from it? Well it'd be awesome if it actually was worth a 10. And after how awesome it's trailer 2,000 years ago at E3 was, it better be nice.

And I do always love arguments about color palettes. You figure someone arguing about that would love Nintendo and cell shaded games. Then again those are fun and can be amazing to look at too....... But I think one day we need to make an FPS where you're killing people in the world's largest gardens. COLORS EVERYWHERE. It'd be some acid trip game likely.

Yes, but I never said that that would negate the game being good as you seemed to suggest that dark colors made the graphics irrelevant in KZ2. I am still hanging onto hope that RE5 will be an excellent game.

And I hate to tell you but yes you can have an opinion and not be biased. It depends on the strength of your opinion and how far you let it go before you believe it as fact. Example: my opinion is that RPGs in general are boring, repetitive and lack creativity. Yet I rarely preach this to people suggesting an RPG is great (like FF7) and I realize that my opinion doesn't mean I'm right, and in fact I actually LOVE Fallout 3, and the Paper Mario and Pokemon series.

Maybe the idea of someone who doesn't always take their opinions to an extreme seems impossible to you and many other people. I guess I can't blame you in this day and age, though. Apparently some people even KILL based on their opinion sometimes, rofl.
