Coming by way of Giant Bomb (http://www.giantbomb.com/news/neversoft-head-confirms-theyre-not-doing-next-tony-hawk/775/) is news that Neversoft has confirmed that they've handed off development of the Tony Hawk series to someone else and are focusing on the Guitar Hero franchise. Surprised? Probably not... but now its official.

In the interview, Jewett confirms that Neversoft has moved on from the skateboarding genre that it made famous. Here's the relevant portion:

Neversoft plans to release more sequels to the "Guitar Hero" series — including the much-ballyhooed "Guitar Hero: Metallica" set for release during the first quarter of this year — but the company has let the Tony Hawk series go to another developer.

"It's probably best for the franchise ... it's time for someone else to add fresh ideas to it," Jewett said.

I completely agree with the last statement, but don't agree that getting away from the controller is a good move.

I wish they would just remake 1-3. THPS 3 was my favorite though. Darth Maul ftw.

remake...? Get the fuck out of here. If you want to play old games, then go play them, this industry really doesn't need to do what the movie industry has been doing for years, rehashing old shit.

How about Neversoft just stop making games... works for me.

As far as THPS goes they need to realise that Skate is the new hotness.

This then - put the first three games into a collection, just like MGS and ..any of those other games that are in a collection which I can't remember off the top of my head.

I think the Tony Hawk Franchise is the perfect example of The Peter Principle in effect in gaming.

I still think the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater concept is a great deal of fun and could stand to be released for this generations consoles. It's the overinflated thing Tony Hawk has come to be that I think people are a little negative about.

They should just remake THPS 3, honestly. All the stuff afterwards was too difficult and not as fun.

I've never played a Tony Hawk game that I didn't find a whole tonne of fun. So, in all honesty, I'm not sure how I feel about this.

If it's been given to Vicarious Visions, and their recent silence may well suggest that's the case, then that's OK. Trying to go super-peripheral like Guitar Hero is not.

Of course my statement was 100% serious and completely contemplated the impact of Neversoft shutting down.

Oh wait... how about we just read it as "I don't think Neversoft make good games"?

*rolls Zaro's eyes back to him*

Here, they'll get dirty otherwise.

Their Spider-Man game on the original Playstation wasn't too bad.

Wow...that was a long time ago!

I disagree. The first 3 TH games were awesome. Then it became a game where you & bam margera took turns jacking each other off.

If they remade TH1-3 with updated graphics & locales it would sell just as well as the old ones did.

If I was a game producer taking over this franchise, the next words out of my mouth would be.

We are pleased to aquire the TH games & I am thrilled to announce our next game right now. It's called Tony Hawk 5: Back to Basics.

Then I would sit back & watch myself get filthy
rich.

People rag on the Hawk games waaay too much. They are fun, accessible and every single one has reviewed well.

If you like the THPS games and haven't played the new games your doing yourself a disservice. The last two were great and cut out the cars and crap. They were just really great skating games.

Like everyone else I loved Hawks 1 - 3... I even enjoyed some of the ones that followed but the gameplay had really stagnated and Neversoft just came across as lazy. Then Skate came and we all ceased to care. :P

Realised this probably means no GUN sequel either. I really thing it's a shame to give Neversoft such a dull, easy franchise. Your really not stretching them.

If I worked there I'd be pissed if I was moved off TH to do GH.
